2025 Bamfield and Barkley Sound Reports

I’ll just chime in on a quick report as I know people are wondering about the inside and algae in the sound. So, we’re up in Bamfield from Saturday and left this morning. I will say fishing was definitely slower on the inside and boats were coming back to the lodge empty handed. Our first morning fishing I just went outside to Keeha bay and we’re able to hook into 4 Springs and our best depth was 38 feet on a hootchie plus fished anchovies at all different depths but the hootchies out fished bait. I took my kids out one afternoon to Sanford and tried 38 feet again just because it was working on the outside and even though the algae bloom was going on my son hooked the biggest fish of our trip at 21 pounds so, I don’t believe that algae bloom was that deep on the inside.

We fished all different areas around Bamfield and if you put in the time you’ll get into fish. We didn’t spend big days on the water as we went to Brady beach one afternoon also checked out the east side another morning.

I will add this picture from this morning as we did a quick fish back at Sanford hoping to try and get my youngest into one more fish and we lost a decent fish at 38 feet on a hootchie and noticed after the battle both hooks snapped off!

Had the same thing happen with a big hali this trip. Was only hooked on the trailer hook and it looked exactly like your picture. Lot of the hooks sure don’t stand up these days especially on the spoons

Well, we've fished the past 2 days in the Sound. Spotty for sure. Had a great bite at diplock yesterday afternoon. Managed to land 3 nice springs and a coho. We fished swale and harbour entrance prior to diplock and couldn't find a keeper. Today was slower though. 2 fish in the box, both high teens. Got them at the bamfield wall. We will see what tomorrow brings....

Figures. I just got back, but that is OK Nanaimo looks like it has some good fishing so time to fish the backyard.

Fished Kirby today in early AM and was dead. Got some coho that's it. Wow I know some of you are fishing in new area but right rod to shore. OMG.....

The only thing that really worked for me last 4 days were cuttlefish patterns. The springs we got on the Bam side were stuffed with large squid 🐙. Near cree it was all small baitfish.

This one and blue meanie worked well. The UV white mini turds and hootchie weren't working as well this time around. A lot of spoons also like the 3.0 herring aid kingfisher in silver and gold just didn't produce.

Never rolled bait. Always a great time in Barkley Sound and hopefully will be there in next few weeks before season winds down.20250701_122457.jpg

This is nothing new, got rid of using stock hooks 15 years ago. Go big 4/0
