I am all for a catch and release style derby, but the entry fees are so much money, I couldn't justify putting down that much money. I hope if they put this derby on again, they rethink the way they set the derby up. It only caters to the rich as far as I am concerned. $1000 entry fee!!!! A side pot of $250 per day!!!! So if you only enter the side pot, you catch the biggest fish of the weekend and you don't qualify for the main prize????? I guess there is always critisism. Just saying there would be alot more participation if it was set up for everybody to afford and enjoy.
Atleast they are raising lots of money, seeing that there were no fish weighed in, no prize give away. lol maybe the weigh in boats coaxed the whales in to scare all the fish away.
I was interested in this derby when I first thought $250 entry for amatuer boats wasn't bad, until I learned it was $250/ day!! so $500 to enter for the weekend. Waaaay to expensive, especially in a place where there is, I don't want to say no fish, but no fish were caught!! Some changes need to be made if they want it to be a success. They should have their pro $1000 division, but amatuer should be done by rod tickets. 1 rod 20 bucks or something, 4 rods $80....
Maybe they will carry over the prizes into next years derby and as Max said, maybe a little later in the year wouldn't hurt.
I was out at north arm, bell buoy, Pt Atkinson, West van and finally the Cap mouth. Nothing until around 7pm at the mouth of the cap a 7lb jack spring. Only saw 1 other fish caught the whole day! Slow is putting it mildly.
should be a bunch of big springs showing up anytime now 1st or 2nd week of septFished bell buoy this morning for a bit, then T-10 from 10 to 1. 1 little shaker and that's it. I'm back out next Friday and Saturday. I'm really hoping it picks a bit.
On a side note, a client of pacific Angler decided not to enter the derby but caught a 44lb spring west of the bell around 11 am? yesterday.
a 21.6 lb spring taken right freakin beside me won! It was at T10. There were about 5-6 legal fish during the day. 3rd place (won a 9.9 kicker) was a 13lb spring!

Fishing was slow but the derby was very well run and fun to be in.
