2012 Vancouver, Howe sound and Sunshine coast reports thread

Fished T-10 yesterday. Like everyone said a lot of long faces! A few tiddlers but that was it. Fished from 11 til about 4. A lot of boats out - didn't see one net come out.

I am all for a catch and release style derby, but the entry fees are so much money, I couldn't justify putting down that much money. I hope if they put this derby on again, they rethink the way they set the derby up. It only caters to the rich as far as I am concerned. $1000 entry fee!!!! A side pot of $250 per day!!!! So if you only enter the side pot, you catch the biggest fish of the weekend and you don't qualify for the main prize????? I guess there is always critisism. Just saying there would be alot more participation if it was set up for everybody to afford and enjoy.

Atleast they are raising lots of money, seeing that there were no fish weighed in, no prize give away. lol maybe the weigh in boats coaxed the whales in to scare all the fish away.

I"m sure they will review it later and make changes for next year, its too bad there are not more fish and perhaps next year they will change the date to a bit later for the Cap fish.

I was interested in this derby when I first thought $250 entry for amatuer boats wasn't bad, until I learned it was $250/ day!! so $500 to enter for the weekend. Waaaay to expensive, especially in a place where there is, I don't want to say no fish, but no fish were caught!! Some changes need to be made if they want it to be a success. They should have their pro $1000 division, but amatuer should be done by rod tickets. 1 rod 20 bucks or something, 4 rods $80....

Maybe they will carry over the prizes into next years derby and as Max said, maybe a little later in the year wouldn't hurt.

The biggest problem throwing an event like this is getting people to commit or actually do what they say, volunteers are hard to come by. Perhaps by having the high fee's the organisers figured on keeping it small and easier to manage, for sure if it was a large derby they would not be able to keep the catch and release aspect either. You never know maybe Berry's or Nikka might do something next year if they see advertising potential etc.

It makes sense, I am sure there is a reason for the way the organized it, I only enter one derby all year, and that is the boxing day derby on the Vedder. Maybe next year I can have more time to plan it out and have some friends go in on the entry fee to bring the cost down.

I was out at north arm, bell buoy, Pt Atkinson, West van and finally the Cap mouth. Nothing until around 7pm at the mouth of the cap a 7lb jack spring. Only saw 1 other fish caught the whole day! Slow is putting it mildly.

Finally .... a fishing report , thanks T !

put in 4hrs this morning from the Cap mouth down past the pink apartments without even a strike. Fish (Coho I assume) jumping in shallow a plenty... tried choives, spoons, hootchies, different depths, different flashers, no flasher and today wasn't our day. Brought home 1 crab for our efforts and have made some observations on West Van crabs...seems that the majority of males in our pots are mutliated in some way, most missing a pincher or second leg, many more then one. Just an obersvation, I'm sure if we get bored we can speculate why....30 ish crabs in 4 pots, 1 legal....slim pickins...but, it'll make some fine crab dip!

We didn't see any nets put to duty, and the only fish on a line was the boat anchored in the middle of the track catching doggies...

Lastly, to the big cruisers out there that feel the need to come as close as possible to my small boat, I'm really not a movie star...

Very best,

Ian

Fished bell buoy this morning for a bit, then T-10 from 10 to 1. 1 little shaker and that's it. I'm back out next Friday and Saturday. I'm really hoping it picks a bit.

should be a bunch of big springs showing up anytime now 1st or 2nd week of sept

a 21.6 lb spring taken right freakin beside me won! It was at T10. There were about 5-6 legal fish during the day. 3rd place (won a 9.9 kicker) was a 13lb spring!
On a side note, a client of pacific Angler decided not to enter the derby but caught a 44lb spring west of the bell around 11 am? yesterday.

Fishing was slow but the derby was very well run and fun to be in.

When the weight was calculated using the fish measurements and the formula as used in the derby, the calculated weight was 49lbs!!!!!!!!

Jason would have just loved that... :(

wow, tough decision for that boat... not everyday you catch a 44lber that makes you feel sick to your stomach.
But obviously..... still one hell of a fish.
