Great post Fog ducker[:). I've been watching the weather too and it's down to the wire. If you have a source right there that's great. Some of the mornings can be good. I'm running out of Nanaimo right now (until I moore my boat out there) and it's hard to make a call.

Way to go osama, you've come alongway, from wanting to be a trapper way back when?.

Hey guys, here's a fresh report from the weekend. Osama and I hali fished Sat and Sunday with a bunch of guys from the oilpatch. We' didn't go too far, anchored up enjoyed some pops and a lot of Alberta ******** stories and slayed. This pic is from day 1. Most of those are 40's with the biggest being 115 and the smallest being 25. Day 2 was similar although no huge ones made it to the boat.

These guys took home close to 250 pounds of vac-packed fillets and man, what a good trip. 3 of them are coming off a Rivers Inlet trip last summer where they fished for a week and all they got was a 12lb spring!

Osama ripped it up again as usual, he's really coming into his own out here I'll tell you that. I don't think there's a better fisherman in Bamfield right now.

Salmon fishing was kind of slow on Sat we heard on the water, but we were hali fishing and didn't go after them. Sunday afternoon saw some action, as those were the better tides of the day to fish. I went out on Monday morning and pulled 6 out of Whittlestone/Little Beale on the morning tide before getting sealed, and then I packed 'er in and went hali fishing for the rest of the day. All of my springs were small, and talking to some other guys on the water the same thing was going on at Kirby and Beale too.

We were out there all day today:D. Interesting day to say the least. I am not a great sockeye fisherman so we won't go there;). After the morning bite we headed out to Bamfield area. We wanted some hali's but she was a little too snotty for us and the forcast didn't look good either. We started out to 5 mile and decided to head back to Kirby for some trollin. We managed 3 coho and had some equipment problems ( Port side downrigger blew and I still don't know what yet but its electrical). I caught bottom at the same time with the starboard ball and hit reverse and saved it.

I saw Fog Ducker out there today. Cheers mate. He was right next to me when my ball got stuck[:I].

My son and I headed to the the other side of King Edward and jigged the Kelp beds for Black rock fish. We had about 3 in the boat when I looked at the depth sounder and saw a big orange ball and he was on his drop with a Zinger. Well we finally got a legal spring in the boat that took his Zinger on the drop.

On the way home we were the only boat around except for one adrift int he middle of the channel just past Poets Nook. There were 3 drunk guys in a fiberglass tri hull kind of thing with on overheated inboard motor. I ended up towing these guys all the way back to China Creek. The guy gave me 100 bucks at the dock and I said thank you but really I was just glad that everyone made it back to shore safe and sound etc. I told him I just wished that someone would do the same for me someday.

We had a bit of fun on the water yesterday too.

Got on the water a bit late as Clutesi Haven was a bit of a gong show. Went through Stamp Narrows, saw a sockeye jump so tried to put the gear down.

We had one rod in the water at 14 feet and were trying to get the others down when a sockeye took it. I handed the rod to a buddy that had never fished salmon before. He brought it in as I continued to put gear down.

The skipper netted the first fish. We never did get all the gear down. Ended up 6 for 6 in about 15 minutes with the flatlander landing all 6.

We celebrated with a coffee and Fireball and a bunch of high fives and headed out towards Bamfield.

We started fishing at Assits (sp) Island and hit two small but legal springs right away. Too good to be true, so we released them for larger ones. We ended up trolling towards Pill Pt. but my destination was Holford Bay. Along the way we picked up a couple more springs, and kept them.

At Holford, the flatlander hooked into another fish and after a decent battle we had a 20 lb spring on board.

All in all we had a great day on the water. The weather was awesome which added to the fishing and camaraderie.

Totals were 6 sockeye, 5 springs and a 10 lb Coho.

Of course the newbie wanted to know if it's always like this.

Ya, sure it is.

Got home last night from our trip to Bamfield. Launched pre-dawn on Thursday in Port Alberni with the idea of hitting some Sockeye on the way down and then out to Barkley looking for some springs. We started down the river and all of sudden lost RPM's and couldn't get up on plane and was only getting 2500-3000 RPM's. I thought it might be water in the fuel but after checking the filters etc we still had 1/2 power. After spending most of the morning trying to diagnose the problem with the mechanic the problem just disappeared without finding out what was wrong and we had full RPM's again. So down the inlet we went. Got skunked Thursday afternoon in the high winds, tons of floating kelp and slop. Friday we fished Swale and picked up our limit of 8 springs with the 3 over 20, the biggest 26lbs. The rest were 10-14 lbs. We also caught a bunch of Coho early, mostly wild, but got three decent clipped. Saturday we headed back to Swale but it was really dead so we moved out to Austin before tide change and managed 6 springs with a couple around 20lbs (lost two to sea lions). On our run back in we had our mechanical issue pop up again and thankfully Breakers Marine was able to get us fixed after hours (crap in the injectors). Headed back towards Port Alberni yesterday morning and stopped to fish Sockeye but we missed the early morning bite and only managed a one in the hour we fished. Had a great time and met some nice people. Thanks again to Breakers for getting us up and going late Saturday. FD, tried to reach you a couple times on the radio but never hooked up. Maybe next time.

Slabby i have had a similar problem before. It acts like a spun hub but will just disappear. Happened last month when i got to 3000 rpm it would go clunk clunk and lose power as if the prop stopped spinning.

Just got back last night from Poett Nook. Had a great time and a few fish to boot. We left Port Alberni Friday morning and were fishing Kirby by about 7:30. I didn't even have my gear in the water for 1 minute when the first of many coho hit. Welcome to Bamfield!

Played catch and release most of the day with small springs and wild coho. We ended up with one keeper spring and a hatchery coho. We moved to Edward King and my buddy hooked up with a fighter only to get completely spooled by a seal. Fished Pill Point after dinner but we didn't see any action there.

On Saturday morning we left the marina at 4:15ish and were fishing at first light at Whittlestone, and then headed out to Cape Beale. Had one good tug that didn't stick. After heading back in to get some gas, we fished along the wall and had a blast. It was poring rain, glassy calm water and non-stop action. Albeit they were smaller fish, but we kept a nice 18lber, three other springs and coho.

Sunday morning we were up early again and fished on both sides of the Bamfield harbour mouth and got two more springs and lost a couple more good ones.

All in all, we had a great time. The fish were smaller, but we did hear of a 33 from Pill over the radio on Saturday.

FD, sorry we didn't cross paths. I saw your boat, she looks like a beauty. Maybe next time.

Heading out to Cape Beale

June 29 Report

Hey Fellas ,

Just got back from Poett , can’t believe how many forum boy’s I met over the weekend , Unreal , Craig , Captain Kidd , thanks for your help at the dock , muchly appreciated , Another good Burnaby Boy ! , Ken , man , again we did not make it happen , read your report , you did well at swale , good on ya , One day we’ll cross . Highliner , thanks for the words , next time . .. Again , nice seeing , meeting all you guy’s , good times…
Report , well , we started out by putting all of our pots in Thursday evening , upon return , Randy , my cousin , was hauling up our Crab pots after a hour soak , accidentally knocked over his Lucky Pop , went to save her , SPLASH , went for a bag reducer , we gave him a 9.9 for Style , and a 10 for no splash on entry , Picture below , He is better known as “ Randy Phelps “ now , good work buds.
Anyway’s , Fishing seem to have slowed from the dock talk, and reports on the radio , wind was in the forecast as well , so , gut told me to go try our luck with Socks . After a quick zip up the really calm inlet , our lines were wet by 6:15 am .Sonar and the 30 boats said “ Fish Here “ , Nahmint it was . After dusting off my Sockeye Gear Box , played with a few pre tied combos , bang , Chaos. After losing the first 4 out of 6 fish, I threw the net up front , stood on my swim grid , , hand yanked in our next six , in no time at all . pretty funny , double headers are always fun..
Most boats were into fish , a lot of smiles and laughing from kids all over, was fun to watch…. Nog has some great tips on a thread , check them out , very helpful , thanks….

Next day , out to 6 – 7 mile , water was not to bad , a little swelly , but fishable , pounded the ground trolling , no luck with halis’ ( none at our dock all weekend , odd ) so we raised and hit 4 springs , lifted and headed towards Beale , seen a few boats in tight , pulled a 180 , dropped , wham , another 4 springs , I believe 6 Coho there as well , back at the dock by noon.

Next , Last Morning , Sunday , Went back to a angry sea, to Little beale , tried are luck again , No Love !! lol ( where were ya Jeff ? ) , pulled gear , to Ship , Kirby , 6 nice hatchery Coho , 4 –7 pounds. That’s it , nothing huge , largest was only around 16lbs for us , Overall came back with about 24 fish ,4 of us , Not a lot of offshore activity , wind , Hali 1 day limit not that enticing maybe , Don’t know. Back home Monday.

Question , picture below. WTF , I put new 200 power Pro on my 2nd rigger , used it one day , Rained hard that evening , came to the boat next morning , my fricken boat is stained from the green die that came from the wet powerpro , took me a while to figure it out , definitely the line ?? Stained bad ! has this happened to any of you ? look at the pic..
Some pics , Enjoy !!

Hey Felix, great report and pics......... gotta love the Randy Phelps one..:D So..... did he save the Lucky? Great to hear you were into fish albeit not the slabs I was hoping you would slay. Yup, Powerpro will do exactly what happened to you until it is broken in. I recommend Magic Eraser to get the stains out, the sooner the better. I think Wolf might of covered this topic awhile back. SeaWolf and I are booking the bunkhouse at the Nook for Aug 19 and 20th for some slabs, hope to see you there. SS

Hey Fog Ducker, oops, I posted the wrong dates for the Nook. We will be there on Aug 17th, 18th and leaving on the 19th, not as previously posted. SS

Thanks Maurice , Bryan
The Beer was executed , as well as his Blackberry in his hand , ouch !! he took it like a champ , I would have lost it. Don't get me wrong here ,I love slabs , but , unfortunately there are 1 or 2 still on the bottom of the freezer , smaller fish work better at our household , just my wife and I right now , don't mind at all. We tried Randy's Salmon Sashimi that I have been very sceptical about , Let me tell ya , Un fricken real , righ toutta the boat , carefully de boned and cleaned , flash in the freezer for 15 min or so , get out the wasabi and soy , have at er , Awesome , way better than any other i have had , iv'e eaten, at some of the best , no comparison. All 4 of us were fine , had both Coho and spring .
I will be there 16 - 17 - 18 - 19 , back on the 20th. Keep in touch , later, ,,FD....;)

You think Seaswirl could have spent a few bucks and put drink holders in the back. I frequently get abused for spillage by Mark (aka Sniper Striper), diving over for a Lucky though that's cheap.

Hey FD.I am a new member but have been reading the website for quite some time now. Always appreciate your reports and updates.Sounds like another good trip was had.I am heading over from Comox on the 9th to the 12th or 13th (next week)Will be staying in a float house in Julia passage (SO we will be close to SWAle,Pill Kirby ect.Usually only get out to Barkley a couple times in Aug.Any tips on depths ect would be appreciated.Or is it the same shallow top 60 feet fishing like it is in AUG?Once again enjoyed the pics and reports thanks.
Ray

No place I would rather be (FISH ON)

Hey, hey, hey there SeaWolf....... there is spillage and then there is SPILLAGE! To the best of my calculation something like 50% is consumed and the rest is graced to the self bailing deck!:( I figure that when I get you up to 100% consumption, the fuel bill will be covered by the savings in beer.....:D:D Don't pay any attention to him Felix, the SeaWolf is an Explorer and the Capt. only wishes he had a Seaswirl........;) SS
