2009-Barkley-Bamfield-Poett Nook Fish Reports

We fished Hocking Pt. this morning with at least another 50 boats. We caught 4 Sockeye. 2 double headers and biggest was 7 lbs.

Then we moved out to Pill Pt. for the noon tide. Only a few other boats out there. We caught 5 Coho's and 2 Springs. Springs were small, and Coho's 8 lbs. 50 ft for the Coho right at the point, each time we passed we had another fish on.

Then a commercial guy set up shop right at Pill Pt. and blocked the channel off.

Yes indeed, I too would like to know the type of activity you witnessed.
As far as I am aware, the only "commercial" activity sanctioned at the moment that would be working the Inlet / Sound would be either the Test Boat (Seiner - the Argent) surveying for sockeye, or a FN vessel. Neither of which are generally active as far out as Pill Point.

Therefor I am Very interested in whatever information you might be able to provide...

Wondering,
Nog

Hey guys, the sockeye test boat (Argent 1) made a set yesterday at Pill Point, so that might be what business time saw.

Cheers, Millsy

Yes it was the Argent 1.

Didn't mean to get anyone excited - just found out the Argent 1 is a test boat.

Anyone know what happens with the fish they catch?

Sold Commercially. Payment method for conducting the surveys.
Thanks for clearing this one up.

So in the end it was a commercial activity - sort of, just a bit different than what I originally thought.

How often will they do the test sets? And will they keep testing the same spot?

They do 6 sets a day and they'll be fishing now through July 28 at 2 days/week (15 days total). They sample 100-200 fish/day and they let the rest go. That's how they figure out the abundance of the return and it helps management and stock assessment make decisions abundance, run-timing and when to open and close fisheries.

That's good info to know. Thanks Millsy

Fellas

Just back from the nook yesterday , Fishing was good , fished Sat and Sun Am , limits of both Springs and Cohos , released a Sockeye at Pill ,Alot of Sockeye on the sounder, mostly caught on 5.0's and hoochies ,largest spring 23 , largest coho 13, our fish were now seeing larger herring in them. Sounds like most fisherman were doing well in all the popular areas on the radio , alot of small 3-5 pounders in certain areas ,Larger fish were about, you had to go out and explore , Kirby , Ship , Pill were quite busy , moved out when the crowds came .did get out to 6 -7 offshore on a tide change, I manned the rig , Dean sleighed the fish , did see one of Mills boats around 7 mile , Aluminum boat , was beautiful out there , hope ya did well, we were out there all alone !! Got to talk to Danny from Bish , nice to see ya again , I apologize for not recognizing some of you that pulled up along us , your boats did not have names or handles on them ! The new boat was awesome , ran well , fish seem to like it. Great time , thanks to Dean ( Coyote Spooner ) Class act , great fisherman. Get out there and have fun , Fishing is awesome.. Heading back next week with 3 other guests , report on return , mabe even post up there on the L.T.

some photos for ya...

Cheers , FD...;)

Black Belt? Yeah I thought so....looks like he used the traditional Karate poke-in-the-eye technique to subdue that last coho ;) Not to mention that death grip he finished it off with.

that's awesome Yammy " Poke in the eye " yer right , looking at the photo , does look like a " Chump " I thought it was a little off when i looked at it on the boat , those lucky pops make fish look bigger , woman hotter , the nose , the eye ,tells it all , i don't see alot of fresh ones like this , only see them in the Vedder with " Dog " teeth , Boot lookin like . The meet looks great though , bright orange , curious to know how there on the table. Take care guy's, .. FD..:)
