So what's everyones thoughts on this coming weekends fishery. I've only fished Sooke this winter but since the herring are getting ready to venture up the Gorge I was thinking about moving around to the waterfront. But then that causes it's own problems in that I don't know the area so I may waste alot of time learning the area.
So should I stick with Sooke cuase I know it (and have had pretty good luck) or should I move around to the waterfront following the Herring. And if I move to the waterfront what area (s) should i fish (easy to fish, productive, etc)

Thanks

my feeling is stay with what you know.
i have been fishing the waterfront all winter
and it has actually slowed down over the last couple
of weekends.
that being said, i am going to try it again this afternoon
and tomorrow a.m.
will advise later !

trolled from Clover to Brotchie this afternoon, and not
a strike. purple haze on one side and anchovie on the other.
varied depth from 110' to 160' hoping to find a salmon
but no luck.
will try again in the a.m. and catch a tide change
hopefully it will be better then.

pretty lumpy out there today, even had a brief snowstorm on the
water this a.m.
fishing was pretty slow, one hit, one fish about 7 lbs
on a purple haze squirt at 150'.
crabbing has been good though, got 5 today and 4 yesterday

Was going to hit the Bluffs today, forecast didny look good, gale warnings. It was fine, that marine forecast did it to me again, quite inaccurate. Try tomorrow.

There was a little derby off of victoria today heard from a few guys salmon fishing was not good even out at constance very few weighed in seems the fish dont like the cold front as well.

Seems december is the best month is for winter springs...
my best success is from early december thru till mid january.

never hit any "teener's" this winter yet.
maybe they haven't arrived yet ?

Question! winter spring fishing is either off or on,obviously, but my question is, if answerable,as I find it quite perplexing/frustrating, is the areas we fish, Vic water front Sooke etc are they there? not there? not feeding? Is it a unknown factor or are they always on the move following and searching for feed? The summer time is quite consistent but winter is another thing.
Hope to read your theories or facts. Thanks

May seem weird, but the winter fishery off the waterfront
is more consistent than in the summer.
same cannot be said for Sooke.
you just have to know the spots to fish, and then put in your time.
quite often you will get fish.
they are called "feeder's" for one reason, they eat lots!
the bite times will last longer.

Yesterday, Saturday, we were in the Plumbers and Pipe fitters Union fishing derby. Small derby, 50 people. winning fish were.. 1st. was a 12lb. followed by an 8lb,6lb,and the rest (hand full) smaller than 4 lbs.... We fished Clover point to Brotchie, only had one fish 9-10 lber on had it to the net and popped off! Hooked it at mid depth 110 feet in 220 feet of water.. The sounder showed all the springs half moon symbols on the screen being at mid depth all around the huge solid herring balls on the sonar all day. One rod we fished deep bouncing bottom all day.. not even a hit... Forecast was for Gales, never materialized.... fishing in the snow was cool... had the floater suits zipped up all the way! Brrrrrrrr...
