Tyee Tales....2011.....Live And In Color....

Two Tyee were registered this morning, both caught by new members and both guided by well respected guides, Reid Herkes and Randy Killoran.
Little bite just after 5:30 AM it appears.
Note to my faithful rodholders who haven't been out yet.......hang in there.
I'm hosting out of towners this weekend but available Monday for you guys.
I'll be in contact with you later.

Take care.

Spot on lazoman as last night saw a near 40 boated by angler Jan Debruyn, guided by veteran Painters guide Bruce (The Goose) Aikman. At 39 1/2 lbs it's now leading the Tyee Club season and, unless misinformed, I believe it may also be the largest fish for Painters so far.
We heard the bell ring for that fish and saw a couple of undersized ones boated but had no strikes ourselves last nite.
An old pal from Victoria is arriving today so we'll be hitting both AM and PM tides as well as some day fishing on the flood.
I've got sore muscles just thinking about it. LOL

Take care.

Friday evening found your faithful scribe pulling hard on the oars as he yelled "FISH ON!" while watching pal Karl palming the reel as a nice Chinook started its first run. Yep, we managed a nice 24 1/2 pounder last nite, shadowed badly by the 36 1/2 pounder weighed in by John and Lisa Woodward however and leaving me still without a Tyee.
It's the first fish I've rowed and was caught on a venerable old pearl pink Lucky Louie plug that has more than a few teeth marks on it.
4:00 AM came before breakfast this morning and by 5:00 AM we were on the water, joining the growing mob of boats common to a Saturday in the Tyee Pool.
Karl rowed me and while we parroted all the good guides we received nary a sniff.
We did see a 29 pounder weighed in which seems the biggest fish caught this morning.
Bit of a nap in store now then some daytime fishing then dinner then the evening tide still ahead as well as tomorrow morning again.
Gotta love it.

Take care.

We'll cross paths sooner or later I'm sure.

Nothing new to report so far from the pool here.
A couple undersized only from Sat AM to last nite.
Slept in today as pal visiting and I went slightly astray via Glenlivet and ice cubes last nite.
Damn those ice cubes anyway. LOL

Out again tonite though so will report back.

Take care.

A warning went out that a guy from Gold River was lurking nearby so everyone stayed at home?

I dunno.

It could have happened.

Take care.

Sunday evening found me tired and a bit sore after rowing pal Karl the previous tides so I opted to rest the old body and not go out. Earlier in the day I'd watched a number of fish rolling while a few diehards tried for them. At the same time I was in conversation with one of the best guides around and he shared a few thoughts and marks that I may find handy someday.
Anyway, Klaus Weger was out and managed his guest into a 32 pounder last nite so that makes 11 Tyee registered now.
There appears to be an inordinate number of undersized fish this year but perhaps the biggger ones are simply lolly-gagging on their way home.
Once this little weather system passes I'll be looking for my three as yet untested rodholders to come forward and share in the joy of being rowed in circles in the Tyee Pool.

Later.

Take care.

Thursday morning and nothing new to report.
No Tyee caught for a few days now but hope remains.
Evening tides poor recently but should improve as the days pass.

Stay thirsty my friends.

Take care.

It's a curse I tell ya........a curse.

Got Scott K arriving tonite for the weekend then my sister arriving Tuesday for a few days.

Should be able to fit in a few new rodholders though.

Still three not tested yet.............one of them could be magic.

Hang in there.

Take care.

Just off the water with Scott K and nada for us.
One guy did weigh in a 30 this morning so we got to hear the bell ring for the first time in a few days.
That's 12 Tyee so far which isn't great by any means. Mostly undersized this year so far.
I'm always up for trying a "magic" plug so hang in there. Scott leaves tomorrow and my sister arrives Tuesday so we can sneak in an outing somewhere there I'm sure.

Take care.

Well, Scott and I struck out again so he's off home empty-handed.

However, we heard the bell ring this morning and subsequently heard that Joe Painter rowed one first thing.
My buddy is Joe's neighbour and mmentioned the other day that Joe was dismayed he hadn't caught one yet, but now he has.

Perhaps I've not been complaining about not catching one loud enough. LOL

Take care

Just got back from C. R. Got rowed twice in the Pool but no luck. Saw a few in the teens and twenties caught but no bell ringers. Still it was a lot of fun.

Question: Do you rowers ever have to deal with seals looking for a easy meal?

Just saw a large sealion swimming through the pool this morning.
I've not witnessed anyone dealing with a seal but it does happen I'm told.
There is a rule that if a seal grabs your fish it is disqualified immediately, although I'm not clear on the reasoning behind that.

Last nite my neighbour Mike rowed me again and while we managed nothing but a nice evening on the water a few more unders were hooked.
Roy Grant decided to show off and actually hooked three last nite but boated only one undersized.
Paul Curtis rowed his angler into one but it was lost.
Couple other people hooked up too.

Next time.

Take care.

Windy and chilly tonite so I wimped and cancelled a go-out........to be made up later.
About 30 or so hardier types rowed about in weird conditions...ie: northish winds with an ebb tide, and I saw but three unders weighed in. Saw a 27, a 24 by a happy young lady and a 22 by a youngster who was also pretty stoked.
But no Tyee today.
I heard there were 800 Chinook at the Quinsam hatchery already plus a few thousand in the Campbell and it appears that many arriving salmon aren't hanging about in the Tyee Pool like usual because Hydro had to keep the Campbell flows fairly high until just recently to get rid of water from the huge snowpack melting off and that has enticed them to move upstream quickly, more's the pity.
Whew!!! Now that's a sentence. LOL
Anyway, there are some Tyee around because Jigger Joe boated a 36 he caught right in the rivermouth yesterday. I watched him hook it and play it for quite some time as he drifted northward. He's a daily visitor to the pool but turns off his engine and rows into position before commencing to jig his way along, as is the rule. To each his own, within the rules.

Take care.

For whom the bell tolls.

Well, this morning it tolled again for Joe Painter, who boated and registered a 34 pounder.
This is his second Tyee in but a couple of days so I'm off to steal whatever plug he's been using.
Don't tell him I'm coming.....ok?

Actually I'm off shortly to pick up my sister in Nanaimo, fresh off the seaplane from Sechelt.
Maybe one of my plugs will work tonite.

More later.

Take care.

I was told by a good source that it's a plug that Catherine Painter refinished and repainted for him.

I'm going to have to track her down. LOL

Take care
