To or not to support the small guy

I had a similar experience with a rod that was a gift. The second time I used it I broke it. I took it to the shop where it was bought hoping to have it repaired/replaced. I just got in the door and the shop owner without even looking at it or giving klme a chance to say anything said "Its not covered by warranty but if you want you can send it back to my supplier at your own cost of $40.00 and they might do something". Not knowing the cost of the rod in the first place I walked out went accross the street and spent $800.00 on a new rod and other fishing stuff and refuse to deal with the first store for anything. I will drive 300km to shop rather than buy from him.
The worst part of it is that my daughter-in-law who purchased the rod took it back to the store and dealt with an employee who took it sent it back at no cost to her and it was replaced. However when it was replaced it was replaced by a cheaper rod than she originally purchased.
Further the shop that I deal with now gives excellent service. I brok a rod I had purchased there, took it in to see if it could be fixed. They replaced the rod at no cost and no questions just some advice as to how to prevent breaking a rod in the future.
If the first shop had let me speak and then told me it wasn't covered by warranty and could or could not be repaired I probably would be still shopping there.

It's unfortunate because both party's lose in this situation.
mlaag likely won't shop in the store again, so the business is
also out a customer.
If i had been the business owner, i would have offered up some discount's or a gift certificate in order to smooth it over.
Maybe even offer to replace the guides at cost ???
IMHO it's all about how you handle the situation and keep a customer happy rather than pit him against you.

Looks like it's time for a Shitty Store/Dimwit Customer thread.

Having both bought and sold a tonne of tackle I have all kinds of stories to tell.

Have to do it sober though....[8D]

Who gives a $*&+ about some guys rod....How was the movie? [:o)]

I've never spent $120 on a rod.

I don't fish Halibut yet, just salmon for 30 years or so.
One of my rods was the cheapest dad could buy way back when I was a kid, I sitll use it and it still catches fish.
The last 20+ pounder came in on a rod I got for $6.99. Worked just fine, and I've had it for 4 years.

I've bought cheap rods. And been thinking about upgrading to some expensive rods (500+/each). But now, I'm wondering.

I've never had a spot of rust on any of the cheapos I run. (Maybe they're plastic?) And I haven't rinsed them once.

Maybe I'll stick with them. They seem to catch fish just fine.

If I had spent $100+, and they rusted within short, I'd take them back.

I support whichever shop is closest when I remember to be picking up what I need. That means "the little guy" most of the time as I live in the city, and you gotta go to the burbs (or crackville) to find a box store.

maybe the guy who owns it gives a ****! [:o)]

You have to take care of your customers and at least offer something. It dosen't seem to matter what you buy these days, cheap or expensive it is mostly crap.

Hmm, i see why every goes on these forums. Just about everyone has some sort of *****ing to do haha. I for one think its just funny how this conversation started out by discussing the idea of "supporting the small guys" and now its broke out into everyones entitled opinions about every thought that comes to mind. but hey were all in the same boat, we've all bought somthing that dosent come to out full satisfaction and you knwo what thats just life. And yes hey i feel sorry for the guy, i wouldnt be happy if my gear became defective after a few uses, but hey I WASH all my gear iregardless of the usage. I agree with Tailspin, and Wolf, lets just all get along and hey hugs dont hurt anyone.

Thanks: Wolfs All Time Fan

P.S. and ya i guess walmart would return it, i dont think any of the fully qualified walmart employees would know anything about fishing gear at that fact. so go ahead and let walmart bite the cost of that rod, they dont mind they're only a multi billion dollar company who can deal with those set backs. and hey wolf is right. everyone talks about how supporting the small guys is better for our economy, so i think i'll stick to helping out local boys everywhere on the island. but besides the fact if we all thought like "Gypseas" and believed that the customer was always right there wouldn't be any small businesses in the world because people would just abuse **it till their breaking point and the return them with no care at all. but hey ive have never had a single problem with the boys at "that store", they talk to you, acknowledge you when you enter the store, and they ask you what you're looking for, not just trying to sell you the biggest ticket item they own. so if anyone has any complaints about my rants then so be it. but hey if you all want to believe that any john doe will replace your items at crappy tire or wally mart then good luck with that.

So what about my point that a store say like WalMart has 200+ employees that all spend their money in our respective cities. So how is "small guys better for our economy"? Walmart's payroll must be huge. Usually the price of the same item is less at a bigger store, so we all as consumers have more money to spend around town in addition to the wages of the 200+ employees. I would say in an average year I spend about $8000-$9000 bucks at Walmart. For the same things at a smaller store I couldn't imagine how much it would cost! I know I wouldn't be able to afford to shop there though that's for sure.

Just google Walmart linked to jobs/busineses lost. Its a known fact that wallymart is bad news for local economy.
Can ya spell "minimum wage" and "made in china" ?

Thread hijacked just a tad eh boys.....

I just bought that same rod, used it like 10 times no problems with it at all. never rinsed it. I think you just got a bad one out of the buch and i think they should exchange it for a new one. The store has to agree that there may be a lemon in the group and should respect your buisness.

DONT Kid yourself alot of the fishing tackle and alot of other things aren't cheaper at Wally World and the quality on alot of things suck.
I would definately and DO support the smaller shops, better service and you know what? These guys had the BALLS to start a shop which is more than what 90% of us can say. So I SUPPORT them

hey i never meant to really harsh on someones rant, but hey its just my opinion, just like everyone else has lol. thanks
