To or not to support the small guy

Fishing season must be coming to a close, 3 pages about rusty eyes[:0]. This may seem to fall in the captain anal department about a spic and spam boat and gear, however, i quickly wax my rods and the eyes with 3m boat wax pre season. It does seem to slow the rust process on the hali rods, however i think if it can rust it will. Some of the cheaper hali rods, like the ugly stic have endured the best IMO, go figure. I also know guides who spray anything with metal with WD 40 any chance they get in places more remote, without fresh water rinse options.

Hey highlights
Have you tried to take something back for warranty, probaly not
I am a pretty easy going guy and no matter which way you try and spin it they did not stand behind their product. They had the rod for a week and was told to come and collect it as their nothing they could do about it. As I said if it was a larger store it would have been replaced

Mlaag, as a matter of fact I did get two new fly reels replaced no questions asked. Very impressed with the speed and quality of that service. I was certain they were going to try and suggest I was up against a warranty conflict considering I was using my "fly" reels off the downriggers. Nope , no questions asked. I was only expecting a repair and sure as $%^ the rep gave me two replacements. That made my day.

I can only say that it is indeed too bad that things could not have been resolved between you, and that it has led to the forum.

Then again , it wasn't you who suggested the retailers name. That does show descency!

Not trying to put a spin on this. Just suggesting there are always variables that only the store and customer are privy to.

PS I know how it feels to be up against a company who chooses not to stand behind their product. I Just got told that I forfeited my warranty on a $100,000.00 boat due to a technicality. Apparently a $200.00 transfer fee was not paid within the 30 days of prchasing my new boat. That reeks!!!!! Think I really tried to save that $200.00 . Not a chance. Thing that burns me is that it is obviously a new boat with 9 yeras warranty left and yet they seem almost "happy" to be done with their obligation to me the "customer" when it is their product that they boast has the best warranty in the business. :(

So beleive me when I say I do understand your issue here.

MAN I didnt think I opened a hornets nest I do feel for you there with that rod but I really dont know what to say I have the old DIAWA samari series "west coast halibut" rods and ill be honest in saying they are the best halibut rod I have ever used and paid close to almost 200 bucks a piece for them over ten years ago!!!! and they are definatlly time to be re done and I will do it as the rod is in great shape still...

Ill can say I have shyed away from that type of rod just because I wasnt sure about those type of eyes.Dont know what to say as I think the guys there are great know one of them close to 20 years now. all I can say is Sorry!!!!

It is a very good store just like the other one just depends where you want to shop

Good luck wolf

Hey, I'm a silly fuss pot and I don't complain. My gear is pristine . Including my boat. My money, my perogative. LOLOL Really though, whats wrong with wanting to keep the place spic and span?
I had a car tire blow on me coming home last month. Usually get home by 6pm., and play Felix Unger with the gear I work hard to buy. Got home this particular evening at 9pm. For some reason I couldn't find the tire iron for lugs nuts....

Long story short, finished washing gear at 11pm. because it would have driven me nuts to have left it in the trunk.

Highlights...we fussy pots have to stay together for the sake of Felix. [:p]

All I know is my $30 shimano's are two years old, never been washed, and look like they're new...and that's not because they haven't been used or caught any fish ;).

I make a point of washing down my gear too. I have had excellent service from a 5.5' Berkley Tidewater . Just went and checked the rod, and guess what?? After at least 8 yrs, no rust, wrapping in good shape-- just loosing a bite of paint. The reel that I used to land my biggie this year is a 12 yr old Daiwa Sealine ( w/o wormgear)

I paid $20 at a garage sale from a guy that won it in a raffle but didnt fish.

In fact the reel is so old that Riversportsman in CR cant find new drag washers for me.... I'm goona miss that old reel

but the point is-- raise holy-hell on the rust issue-- Its bs, should NOT happen.

Interesting thread with some opposing opinions for sure. BUT...
Let me offer my two cents...
If you're fishing once a year or 200 days a year...
Rinse everything before the end of your day...period...
Salt crystals form on your gear, your line and even your net.
Let it sit for a week without flushing everything, and yes you're going to pay.
I would look at this as an opportunity to do the following:
-Replace the guides with higher quality Fuji's or whatever.
-Fish more, so you can stop the degredation earlier.
I understand your issue, and I truly sympathise with your displeasure but the smaller shops out there have a tough time with the mass purchasing power that WalMart (can you say bottom down economics) et al has.
Service is where they shine and service is what keeps clients.
I'm sure, if they could, they would bend over backwards to help but there's a point when they cannot service at their cost something out of their control.
Have you thought about replacing the guides yourself? Take a course, add some personal touch to the wrapping, sign your name on it....give it to your kids when they grow up????
Lemonade!:D
Like I precluded this posting, just my 2 cents....

On the same note, I have a rod I bought from Wal-Mart that the end of it snapped off, possibly from me hitting some big waves and it smashing into the windshield. I do not have a receipt anymore, I am very bad with them, but I will take it up there and they will replace it with no questions asked. How's that for service?
As for supporting the local companies I know that buying from a local guy helps our local economy, but what about the 200+ people that each of these big stores employ? I'm sure it dwarfs the payroll of these smaller stores, so who actually contributes more to the local economy? I doubt that these employees of the big companies make enough to go on jet setting holidays, so they probably spend most of that money back into the local economy. Whereas a business owner who does ok is more likely to take that expensive trip to a foreign destination and spend that money elsewhere.JMHO.

There is a movie I just watched kind of about this subject, pretty funny and almost worth a watch.http://www.watch-movies.net/movies/bait_shop/

Dogbreath-- got your email. many thanks, I will follow up on your suggestions

You all make me laugh of how some of you are missing the point we are talking local guys who have lived here most of there lives and you questioning if the money stays locally give your head a shake!!!!it doesnt matter if it is the one store out at westshore or the one in town these men in both places have worked very very hard all there life to get to where they are no different than you and I.We all want the best for ourselves, and they have done just that and I tip my hat to them.

So I guess taking a rod back to wally world after you have bashed into a winshield is ok ?????? warranty is for a defect in the workmanship and blemish of a product not someone abusing it for what that product was intended for im sure if you told them the TRUTH hhhhhhmmmmmm maybe a different outcome!!!!!!!!....

Am I not right it doesnt matter if it is fishing rods/gear it can be any product we are now talking anything from electronics to cars.... put the shoe on the other foot just for once and think of what you would do if money was coming out of your own pocket????it a thinker isnt it!!!!!!

So its ok to rip off a big american company so be it, morally I personally think its wrong but some people have strong or weak ones

Good luck Wolf

you are a major contributor,and a guide??

with your ****ty little additude and absolute dissing of forum members you are probably one guide that should be avoided for any kind of a good time and I'll gladly sent all my freinds to someone who ....never mind ya ain't worth the typing...

hurt your feelings?? re-read your posts and grow up

Wow, this post is getting hard to resist. Really though is it the guys fault who has the small shop if Daiwa markets crap as saltwater gear? The shop owner places an order with a distributer or Daiwa directly and gets stuck with this inventory. If whoever he deals with does not let him handle claims than who is to blame really. In order to stay competitive the shop doesn't have a huge margin so it's not so easy to just suck up the price of a defective rod. I wouldn't want to try surviving in that business. It seems people will forget the good so quickly when it comes to one thing or one unfortunate circumstance.

I suppose I'd be pretty upset as well if I just spent $130 on a rod that started to rust after a couple trips. You can tell by the photos (or at least IMO) that the guides have some really cheap plating that has come off and that's why they've started to rust. I've used some $70 Shimanos in the salt for a couple years now with standard fuji guides and have had no problems and have just given them a light rinse after every use. I think the blame here is being shifted to the wrong people, isn't this the manufacturer that should be standing behind their product? It sounds like the guy in the store did what he could and his hands are tied (that's from what I've read, I definitely don't know the whole story). Also, be careful what you wish for on the big box stores. Sure they may be good for the volume they deal with, however wow would it be a shame to lose the smaller shops.

You're right.

Wolf, I don't know you and you don't know me so things typed on a machine sometimes don't come across the way they were meant. For what it's worth, I apologize for attacks to you and will stick to reading and taking it all with a grain of salt. :)
