To or not to support the small guy

I have expensive Halibut rods and also have a Daiwa halibut rod. None of them have exhibited the rust that you are complaining of. I try to rinse them when I have finished a trip. However, I'm not relegious about washing them evertime out and it could be a up to a month till trip end. I bought two cheap one piece rods for the kids at west marine several years ago, and even they have held up really well. I paid a paltry 25 or $35 for them, and they have been great little rods. As a matter of fact, they were the rods I brought on my trip this year for bottom fishing. They are shorter than my expensive Halibut rods, and far more fun to fish with. I replaced both the tiptop guides this year because the kids had cracked the ceramic guides on both of them. Other than that they have been great rods. Higher price, is not always a guarantee you will be satisfied with a product. Every once in a while a bargain ends up being a true steal. Wish I'd bought a couple more of those cheapos. I hope you get the rod repaired/replaced to your satisfaction. That seems like very poor quality manufacturing to degade that quickly.

I certainly do not think $120 is nothing. When purchasing the rod I asked for help on selecting a decent halibut rod .I was told that this one was used by many guides and also commercials and was of good quality. To pay a $120 every three months for a rod work out pretty expensive
I tried to get resolution at the store but was told if I want I can send to the factory. I even mentioned why don't they send it to the factory and again no luck. What make it bad is the rust is even under the varnish . I give them 10 points for selling as it apears they got me to pay 120 bucks for a freeking lemon. When it comes to standing behind their products I give them a 0.
I have learnt my lesson trying to help the small guy is not always rewarding. As I said they will not get anymore of my money

I don't know why Westshore wouldn't fix or replace your rod but there must be a reason. The salt chuck is very hard on any metal and anything that has been in or near salt water must be rinsed off. I have spent lots of time in that store and I have never had a problem with them. Being a new store I would think that they would want to help you any way they can. Being a business owner I know its not easy opening your own store and trying to make a go of it. Did you ask them if it was possible to have them fix the rod at a reduced cost or take it and have it fixed yourself. I needed a new hali rod about 6 months ago and bought the cheepest one I could find since I knew it wasn't going to be used too much and to this day it still looks good. Not sure what that means but I can see why you would be upset. I hope it all works out for you in the long run.
Real nice to mention the stores name based on 1 persons' complaint.

A small store like that cannot just hand out a new rod if the manufacturer doesn't stand behind them to do so. It really comes down to what the manufacturer allows that store to do in such a case, otherwise they'll end up closing their doors. It's up to the consumer to ask about warranties. Some larger chain stores may have a different agreement with manufacturers or may just write the thing off.

Try not to forget all the times you could go into that smaller local store and get advice on what is happening on the local water and so on. I'll gladly choose the smaller guy, research the products I purchase and take the correct steps to maintain my gear. Especially after playing in the salt. Not to say you didn't take these steps however only to offer a different perspective and to say that I feel the little guys are a pretty damn important part of any community.

I had a long winded comment about this again, however the website lagged out and I lost all the stuff I was writing for about 30 minutes!!!!! GJ guys!!! you get the update for the SQL thing yet? OHH I guess not!!

Go to walmart and ask how the fishing has been in sooke the last couple of days or ask the guy at Can Tire what they have been biting on,good luck with that.
There is not a rod around that you can buy that will warranty any guides, don't blame the little guy there just trying to make it and you get what you pay for. There are a few cheap rods out there with not bad eyes .

Small guy every time! Screw Chi-Mart is my motto. I am in competition with China everyday. They have more guys but I am stubborn! LOL ROFL. I think that when you have a problem there is always the opportunity for learning. I like the idea that was mentioned to replace the eyes. Wouldn't it be cool to do that yourself and have it become one of your favorite rods? Each of us has a limited number on seconds on this earth. Spend them wisely my friends. Mike

If they had that kind of information, what would be the point of these forums?

Opps....Sorry, I didn't even notice I did that. But I am on the little guys side and I believe it helps the community by buying from local family run businesses. I don't think it was a mystery on who we are talking about but I apologize if I caused a problem.

[/quote]No problem/no foul. :) The 2 guys that own such store are not "family" per say,but they are very hard working stiffs who have this store as well as REAL JOBS.
I shop there for all my gear. The staff listens to what you are interested in buying and not trying to get you to buy the "on sale" stuff because it isn't selling and they need to flog it. Can't say enough about the place. :D

So is OP going to wrap his own rod or not?

This is the #1 place for rod wrapping gear on the Island http://www.rodbuildersupplies.com/

before you put down cash for fishing gear. especially a rod ask about replacement guarantees saltwater rod should be for salt water. you shouldnt have to put it in the shower after you use it. im in the market for new rods this year also. but il go where ive had good service in the pastpersonally idont want fishing gear i have to wash off everytime i use it.hooks and swivels go in garbage rod guides shouldnt rust for 120bucks. i would be pissed too its a saltwater rod isnt it? not the store though its daiwa who should give a new one.tothe store, then you get it. so what if the guide rusted use it anyway hali dont care about looks. just dont buy another one.

Bee its just good practice to wash all your gear down as it saves you in the long run salt is a killer on ANY gear.

But back on the subject with this rod we really dont know the condition it truely is in to defend him and his decision mlaag may be upset with the rod but we really dont know how much rust is truely on it to him a tiny bit may be to much me personally some of my gear even after washing them ALL the time yes I even have rust on the eyes and it really is not a big deal!!!!the fish really dont give a crap what a rod looks like trust me I know LOL LOL and a bit of rust on an eye isnt life changing.....

He may be a fussy guy and want his gear in tip top shape I dont know???I know some people who take on a different personallity when it comes to there gear and boats we all know them!!!!!You see them at the marinas some guys you almost want to ask if they have protective white sockies for your shoes before you step on there boat. its called OCD LOL.

Too bad but sometimes in the world you cannot please everyone this just may be the case.

Good luck Wolf

I think since the fellow can say that he notes that rust is even under the varnish that seals the guide binding, although he may not be the pro guide, he sounds like he probably knows what he's talking about and therefore isn't being a silly fuss pot. [V]

I am with Bee on this one. You buy something that it's even
called "saltwater" series for crying outloud, so to wash them every time I think its alot of BS.

With that beeing said

I've got a Daiwa Sealine hali rod with a Torium 30 reel. I spent a couple of bucks on the combo and had them sprayed with fresh water after every trip. After only one year rust is showing around guides and the reel is also got paint popping with corrosion.

The topic I believe was the level of service pre and post sale. It seems to me that whoever was in the store that day was not very helpful to say the least.
Been in there myself and amongst other things I bought, were these black clips that I thought were good for salt...wrong. Rustville [V]
I suppose when your basket is full of saltwater tackle, somebody behind the counter should perhaps say yo buddy them clips are gonna rust on ya if you gonna use 'em in the chuck. Four bucks didn't break the bank but you know... just sayin'...

And thats all I got to say about that LOL
cheers

Hey, I'm a silly fuss pot and I don't complain. My gear is pristine . Including my boat. My money, my perogative. LOLOL Really though, whats wrong with wanting to keep the place spic and span?

Do we really know which store he is reffering to?

If we do and we are totally certain, then I have to say it may have been in the approach, of how this guy went about his complaint . I have had nothing short of awsome service from this new shop.
I am a business owner as well, and I'll tell you what some people just aren't very diplomatic. Especially when they are trying to get their way. I'm not trying to suggest the guy's dameanor was off or anything , I'm just saying.

Even though customers are entitled to a certain amount, it always helps to "grease" the conversation abit . Beleive me if things start out pleasant enough then the outcome is usually positive for both parties involved. You want a good product and they in turn have a return customer. I have a hard time beleiving nothing reasonable could be acheived between everybody.

Whatever happened to:

"The customer is always right"

??:D:D:D

I know MY customers are always right
cheers
