I have expensive Halibut rods and also have a Daiwa halibut rod. None of them have exhibited the rust that you are complaining of. I try to rinse them when I have finished a trip. However, I'm not relegious about washing them evertime out and it could be a up to a month till trip end. I bought two cheap one piece rods for the kids at west marine several years ago, and even they have held up really well. I paid a paltry 25 or $35 for them, and they have been great little rods. As a matter of fact, they were the rods I brought on my trip this year for bottom fishing. They are shorter than my expensive Halibut rods, and far more fun to fish with. I replaced both the tiptop guides this year because the kids had cracked the ceramic guides on both of them. Other than that they have been great rods. Higher price, is not always a guarantee you will be satisfied with a product. Every once in a while a bargain ends up being a true steal. Wish I'd bought a couple more of those cheapos. I hope you get the rod repaired/replaced to your satisfaction. That seems like very poor quality manufacturing to degade that quickly.
