SVOP & PCOC Do you need both?

Wondering if both are needed? I have been told that the SVOP superceeds the PCOC but I have also been told you need both.

Anybody know for sure? I have a call into TC but no answer back yet.

I have been told the SVOP is all we need, but I have also been told we need both, so I am curious as to what we need as well.

When I took the SVOP course the instructor was asked that very question and told us that while it made no sense, both are required. We were more than a little surprised. He said that each license layers on top of the next, and ultimately both are required. Seems stupid (that's the kindest thing I can say), but it is required. $35, and about 15 minutes and you will have the PCOC...virtually anyone can pass the test.

SVOP is a commercial certification for operating a commercial vessel. PCOC is a pleasure craft operation certification. You should not need both when you are operating a commercial vessel. That said I am sure no one at TC really knows.i have been told that you do not need both????????

Well I guess as long as you have someone on board during all trips that is buying gas, case of beer, or contriuting to the day fishing some how you are considered a commerical vessel. At least that is how I have read in my SVOP book and what I have been told by TC. So I guess every fishing trip from now on is going to be a commerical trip.

I guess it would be a bit tougher not having your PCOC if you are not chartering or working with your boat. Not sure about everyone else out there but generally when me and some buddies head out for the day the costs are split, gas, bait, any gear I don`t do it for free. By doing this I now fall into the commerical category by recieving payment or profiting by the trip. By how I read it I now only need my SVOP.

I guess if you are covering ALL cost while out on the water and do not take any payment what so ever and you cover all cost yourself you would be pleasure craft and you only need the PCOC, other wise you are a commerical vessel. Thats how I read it anyways. If you do do that I would like to fish with you anytime.

So what the hell is PCOC? :(
Now that we have our SVOPC and MED 1 and M 1st AID. What more will we need? MONEY GRAB!!! :(:([xx(][xx(]

PCOC, Pleasure Craft Operators Card. You need this if you are just pleasure craft, just fishing for fun not using your boat for work related stuff.

Like I said before, if someone is helping pay for gas, buy beer, bait, gear you have profitted from that and are now a commerical vessel. Does not nake sense but that is how it reads in the books.

There is no distinction any more once you have the "C" numbers on your boat you must comply at all times while operating.

Searun ,If you hold tickets that are over and above the requirements you are not subjected to the lower requirement.

eg. 60 ton masters do not need SVOP or PCOC

250 ton masters do not need 60 ton.

I have been told this from several TC staff.

the C designation on your boat gives you the right to charge money for a service or have employees that are paid a wage or salary. If you do not have a C number and take money for a vessel related service you are breaking the law plain and simple.

Beemer sorry to say you are wrong there were several people in my class that had thew 60 T and they still needed the svop ticket.

EVERYONE</u> who handles a boat be it even a 9.9 on a lake needs the kindergarten POC. if they take money or not pretty cut and dry.

As for charters and guides, commecial fisherman, divers, basically anyone who is making money via on the water needs this as TC rules

1. Med a-3
2. SVOP
3. Marine first aid
4. Radio operators card
5. POC

You can argue as much as you want and debate it as much as you want but this is the min</u>that you need, thats why most of the guides on this island are hating this as alot of it is repetative but its what they want!!!!!

And seems most are doing it now.

Wolf, talked to TC only last week and if you have LM you don't need SVOP is what I was told...

NOT what I was told directly. I have a LM License issued out of Anchorage Alaska. TC insisted</u> this would not cover it, and I would be charged</u> were I to carry on with just that in hand. I tried various angles and approaches and ended up with the same answer three times. So, I am in the SVOP course today (literally).

IF you can get what you wrote "in writing" SG, I obviously would be more than interested. ;)

Ok I am confused. I inquired with CCG about the PCOC vs. Proof of competency and was told on more than one occaision that a Power Quadron certificate was equivalent to the PCOC and that I did not require to take the course, or waste my money and time getting a PCOC.

You are now all saying I need a PCOC and contradicting what the CCG has told me at least three times.

Confused.....as usual when dealing with DFO/CCG[V]

So my understanding is that the Coast Guard has **** all to do with enforcement of this. I believe that is the case straight across the board.

This is TC and RCMP stuff. Not CCG. They save lives, not dole out fines.

Sounds like there could be some good challenges to said fines this season since NO ONE can get a goddamned straigh answer.

I gottem all but that gay PCOC and if that is really the end all be all... Holy crap you ignorant douchebags.

Gimee the gaff!!!
