Sunny Shores this weekend

Hey all,

I am going to be motoring the boat over to Sooke with my two little girls this weekend and plan to stay a night or two at Sunny Shores. Figure I will tire them out in the pool and playground and get a couple of hours of fishing in while they nap in the cuddy.

I've never stayed at SS before -- I've been there a few years back. Hoping the pool is still open there? Is there safe anchorage anywhere near East Sooke Park in the basin if we were to take the dinghy to shore for a picnic?

Trying to get the little ones hooked on fishing so I have a couple of fishing buddies as they get older -- but have to play their energy out before we hit the water.

I don't know SS that well, not sure about the pool, but they do have that funny looking miniature golf...good for an hour I'd bet. Sooke has a pretty good indoor pool now, although across the river, so not really easy walking distance from SS.

I went for a walk to Goodridge Peninsula a couple of months ago, with the water tower, that's right there and kind of neat.

As for fishing with daughters, I have two, 10 and 8, and have had mixed results so far. Early experiences they were keen, until the club came out and the blood splashed...different than boys in that way I think! They reeled in a pink together last year and had a blast, but with the rule that if they caught it, they choose if they want to throw it back -- which they did.

Trolling is long and boring for kids, I find, so that's a tough one.

Ironmine Bay, around the corner from Possession Point, is protected from west wind and can jig for rockfish. Kids love that, spiny weird looking things.

If not too windy and not too much current, you can also drift the bluffs for halibut, small ones are regularly caught there while fishing for salmon, 120-150'. Motor upcurrent and just drift through, not sure you have a high probability, but it might be a break from the endless trolling boredom. (closer in to shore I believe there's an RCA, so be aware)

And finally, possibly in "bad dad" land, but when the going gets tough, junk food and portable DVD player can buy you another hour or two out there. ;)

John

Short run to Otter point might get you into a few big boys !

Thanks for the heads up on that one Scott. Called them and no, the pool will not be open this year. Looks like they need to update their website.

Will try to figure out a "Plan B".

Andy is a little reluctant to get the pool running mainly do to liabilities. Can't hardly blame him with all the crap that happens now a days.
