Things are wrapping up, somebody in Sooke drive into a super freak soon!!

eng. man only had 1 fish for a 1/2 days boat ride(100 ft in 200ft.water off the Head and i lost it this time. What's important is the family and I had great day.Remember they call it fishing not catching![8D]

Would love to be out fishing today looking for a big Chinook but its just too busy at work to take Vacation time. Perhaps later this week as the weekend looks very wet so far. I know it is dropping off fast so I am curious when is it generally all over. What is the latest date that some of you have caught them in past years? I also understand that when the Sooke Hatchery gets the Chinook out of the river for eggs and sperm that some of them go over 50 lbs. So are those fish already in past the no salmon retention line from Possession to the far end of the Bluffs and protected or are some still to turn up in fishable Sooke waters?

I have a 24# on Oct 5th in 2005 off of the head as my latest big spring in my books. Yesterday a week ago I saw an incredible amount of large fish arches in the deep hole in the Sooke Basin - that is the deep spot right out of SS. I bet those were a large number of Sooke River Chinooks staging up for their river journey. That Mon (Labour Day) it was pissing rain all day. When I checked again 3 days later they were all but gone. With the recent rains we had I would not be surprised if a number of them were already up in the tidal zone of the river. All depends on the weather. If it was dry until mid Oct and the river was low they might have milled around in fishable waters a lot longer than when rains occur early as this year.

Well I can say that the big ones have moved on (it appears) but the good news is there is a lot of feeders around geting them a lot deeper though 100 ft and more, and a few coho showing up so I would say its going to pick up for them.
Was able to get a nice 18 lber yesterday and then feeders were getting on like crazy
With all this rain its not a good sign for big springs and forcasted to rain even more this weekend,Just wondering if and how many have moved up the sooke river anyone know????
Time to go get chantrelles LOL

Good luck Wolf

I've had a 45 on the 5th of October, Earl's 67.12 was Sept 29th at the trap. Still a few more to come.

I don't get too many big springs late in the season
but here is a picture of the 22.5 lb
I caught on Sunday in the rain.

Looking back, our latest spring was caught at the end october it was an unually dry early fall.A side note;it was a #45 white hatchery buck it was still had some silver on it.

Earls fish was like when 1980??? LOL LOL what year was that 45 lber??
My last really huge one was sept 16th in 07 a 48.5 lber off of muir creek in pouring down rain and the only reason I got it was because a guy lifted his gear when it came at him and he turned the boat right around was a fantastic fight lasted about 10 mins.

Still good fishing yes feeders are showing up and some coho only downside was real little ones that you dont notice on the gear so im checking every ten mins or so.

good luck wolf

I'm going to guess Roy sometime between 2000-2002 bummer is the head went rotten so he said i was really keen on finding which river it came from? It was caught between snapper & the head at 110ft. on a red hotspot & spoon ;) regards Sammy

Ear's fish was late 80's, so was the 2nd largest at 66 1/2 pounds on May 29th at Otter Pt. Hmm seems the biggest are caught early and late..like they don't run with the pack. Makes me think hmmmm.

Doug...I pay ya $100 to say that was Sept 29th :D

I feel the fish are running late this year and there is still a good chance that the older and bigger fish are still on there way. I've noticed most of the summer run springs I've been catching lately are white. All the big ones caught on Aug 29 were white springs.

I wish I could say Sept 29th, then I'd still have a chance to get a big one but they are far and few.

I'm going to try for Coho this week, hopefully there are a few out in the strait.

Last week we hooked up to 4 keeper winter springs in 1.5 hours, first thing in the morning at MC. We released them all hoping for a bigger fish and then they were all gone. No more bite for the remainder of the day

Today I saw Pat Thompsons picture in the Sooke paper with a big fish caught in Aug. I recall that Pat last year caught a 43+ spring at MC around the 20th of Sept. It was big enough and chrome enough for him to get it mounted.

If you don't fish for them you can't catch them.

See you out there fishing for Cohos

A good day fishing with newfie boy, picked up a 21 and a 19lb Chinook so there are still a few around although these were red fleshed very bright silver fish with lots of spots on the tails so I think they may be big feeders/local fish, and not spawners headed for the River. Good thing as I had promised a few bigger fish to friends and family and needed some red ones for lox. We were bottom bouncing a 15 lb ball with a huge herring down off the Rigger without a flasher. We were 200 feet on the Rigger in 160 feet of water looking for a hali or a big ling and had an anchovy stacked 20 feet up for salmon when we lucked out and ran into them on the stacked Rod. Also pick up a monster Black Rockfish about 5 lbs and released around a 12lb unclipped Coho. Both the Chinook were great fighters for their relatively modest size and we both had a blast playing them.

Wolf......... Did you leave a bottle of spice on that boat?

Now Im looking forward to the weekend (An thinkin of reasons to get out of the domestics [:p])
Good job Rockfish

The only bottle of Wolf’s I found on the boat was a very small 50 ml bottle of 12 year old Gibson’s Canadian Whisky. I am not drinking it till I get my first Hali on the Old BW.
