Sooke Boat Launch

Tips Up

Well-Known Member
Been launching out of Sunny Shores so far this year, avoiding Jock's Dock ramp due to the low tides most mornings.
Anyone launched the new public dock the last few days? Too shallow? or OK?
Launching tomorrow and would like to avoid the extra run from Sunny Shores if I can.

Thanks

Just don't do a Tundra :D

I didn't see any signage about paying this morning.

The person who started the rumor wants to be able to just go to the ramp whenever they are short of cash and collect $10 per boat. lol

I don't start rumours. It's coming. See this District of Sooke link: http://sooke.ca/EN/main/government/devservices/land_development/boat_launch.html

Here's an excerpt from that page:

Boat Launch and Parking Fee

At their September 10th, 2012 meeting, District of Sooke Council approved a fee for the launching a boat and vehicle parking at the public boat launch on West Coast Road. One fee of $10 will be payable for both launching a boat and parking. The fee will be deposited into a box located near the boat ramp. Parking will be monitored.

There is no box yet. Hopefully they will use the money to put in a fish cleaning station and fresh water to rinse the trailers.

If I was a Sooke resident and my tax dollars were used to help build this ramp, I wouldn't be happy paying a new fee to use the hotel ramp :(

The way to look at this, it's not the capital you are paying back with the $10 but the necessary ongoing maintenance of the ramp and lot. Or do you think an additional tax levy might be more approriate to pay for this? I also hope that fish cleaning the least will be part of the service there soon.

I stand corrected; the pay box is up and it seems the District is collecting as of now. Maybe Jocks will start collecting the fee as of January 2013.

Chris, for every tax dollar you pay are you really getting your money’s worth :D
Re: "free public dock" this is a bait and switch tactic to build the hotel and have Sooke residents pay twice for using their "free public dock"

so you folks are taking the position that your tax dollars that built this new ramp are the end of expenses. do you really think that is a reasonable position to adopt????

I have no problems paying the $10 ramp fee, as it is one of the nicer ramps to luanch from. My only complaint is that there is no wharf or finger on the other side making it one side in one side out. The other is, and this is not Sooke's flaut is the dumb asses who park in the traffic. I've got a 23 ft boat and a full size quad cab and need all the room i can get. Twice now there as been two dumb asses parked in the middle of the traffic circle and once a guy parked on the outside of the circle. If my $10 pays to maintain this ramp and police the dumb asses it is money well spent. As far as cleaning tables and wash rooms I would prefer that they didn't put them in, to much maintaince and it just slows down things at the ramp.JMHO

It was built as a free launch, of course you would have to feel for the Smiths being right nextdoor with docks that are falling apart and a ramp you can use most of the time.

Are you saying we should pay for urban public parks because they have to cut the grass?

Residents of sooke who own a boat should be able to apply for a sticker and retain free use IF it was their tax $ that built the ramp. Guys from Victoria like me can pay $10.

There should be a fish cleaning station and washroom if they don't want guts on the dock and urine on the beach. I almost got caught taking a leak by a young family who wanted to look at a seal last year. There should be a better option.

Do you really think you are not paying for the park grass cutting? lol Who do you think pays for your public works crew and materials they use? Check your tax bills! Just because there is no specific drop box for every service a municipality provides doesn't mean it's for free. In fact nothing is free.
