So why does it take a derby to raise much needed funds. Sponsors and fishers alike should take part in an annual fundraiser where no fishing is involved. I'll give you my entry fee plus a few hundred bucks. Add that up against the number of people we see in the various derbies. Take that to any of the initiatives and worry about our fishing later.

Just a though seeing as it's going down the tank anyways.

Just a note that I am not sure Victoria/Sooke guys are aware of ....at least a while ago I noticed a comment as to why area 29 had no closures - We are actually closed here in Vancouver for fishing in the area known as the "banana" which is the whole mouth of the Frazer from the entrance to Vancouver harbour at Pt Grey out to QA marker and south past TA marker (off Sandheads)Its a huge area that takes care of any fishing for Chinook near the Fraser.

I think in theory, that would obviously be the ticket, but I don't think thats a $20k battle there. More likely, you would be talking $500k to $2 million battle and several drawn out years, + we'd be on the hook for both sides of the bill as taxpayers. Would probably take more than a couple derbies to pay for that. We need maybe the bear mountain partners that love fishing to throw around their wealth...come on Len, whats another mil???

I want all the fish I release during the extended restriction period marked. I demand that DFO supplies me with spaghetti tags so that I can tag each fish. I want scientific data from my releases. Which is what they always say they never get enough of. Well here is their chance. I really want to know how many out of each ten I release are found successfully spawned out and how many end up in a Fraser net fishery. We should all be demanding this from DFO. What is the sense of catching and releasing a threatened fish and doing no data collection while you have the opportunity? NONE!!!!

Good point Profisher. We had the tags in the 90,s here in the Charlotte's and you are right, a great opportunity. Pretty sure Trev was around here when we were actively tagging.

I also agree with a lot of poppas points, we run catch and release derbies here, tons of fun, well supported. We raise lots of money and and the fish win as well.

Not quite smiley: the Sooke River is not managed by DFO but by the Sooke Salmon Enhancement Society solely and is doing well against the trend - at least the last few years. Hmmm ... what does that tell us?

And to all of you who so bitterly and rightfully complain about DFO: Where were you on May 8th when a few thousands had gathered in downtown Victoria to show the government that there ARE people who care about salmon and who DEMAND CHANGE!?? I wished you could have made time for this date and could have shouted out all your anger RIGHT THERE. THAT was your platform to be heard!!! To cry out here on this forum is pretty moot. Think about this next time you let a chance like that slip by for whatever reason.

Hey Chris, like I said in my other post I think you guys are doing a great thing with your derby - actually getting some serious money going to the hatchery but.... I feel its a cop out to say derbies are the only way to raise money. I know its easy for a keyboard jockey to point out problems say so I'll offer some solutions:

put a donation box at every ramp and tackle store in vic/sooke?

put volunteers at the ramps asking for donations?(I'll offer my time)

This website could have a link to the hatchery donation page?(I have one on mine).

This website could have a yearly donation drive?

Setup a "subscription option" on the SSE website so that I can donate $10-$20 every month. I don't mind donating every month but I'm not going to remember to do it. Just send me a t-shirt as a gift though

Start a letter writing campaign asking local businesses to donate

I can keep going but you get the idea, there are options out there and they can all be done with or without a derby. And every one of those ideas is bound to offer up more money then the salmon classic did.




All those could be done with or without fishing derbies and as powder said C&R derbies work in charlottes.

Oh, and while we are on the topic of DFO BS, they apparently have shut down Jack Brooks for coho clipping (perhaps a minimal clip only!?!?) Something idiotic along the lines of not liking what the US clipping does and they don't want the hatchery to be apart of it. Please explain that logic to me (a new thread would be fine if you actually understand and can explain, as I sure as hell don't!)

The simplest way to raise money for fish restoration is to firstly take license monies out of general revenue and designate it solely to the cause. After that is accomplished a resident should pay $100.00 a year, any day license $20.00 per day, (up to 5 days maximum, then they must buy an annual) a non-resident annual $250.00 all seniors $500.00 as they fish every day Then a separate tidal license for crab & shellfish only $25.00 per year, $5.00 per day.

Great ideas Poppa and we should seriously think about some of those. Maybe we could get a SFBC initiative going - and if it's just a summer fundraiser BBQ for SFBC members and friends.... But non of your ideas, Poppa would tap into the funds that we are providing with the Consultant's Derby. We have industrial sponsors from across North America as far as Buffalo, NY or Atlanta, GA who we showcase our beautiful coast and make them aware what troubles we have here and through some professional leverage get them to support us in the fight for our fish. So until someone tells me that there is already enough money there for all the good things needed for a salmon recovery I am convinced our derby is the right thing to do the way we do it.

Yeah, but I couldn't remember the real reason besides something about not liking the way its done with the US hatchery and it needs to stop here. Jerry confirmed it won't be done either
