Cheater are cheaters, guides, or rec fisherman. Or do they just don't know the regulations.
The problem is a lot of weekend warrior just don't know the rules and regulations. As we all know it is hard to maneuver the DFO web site to know the regulations, and then you add in an older angler who doesn't know how to work a computer. Now add a new regulation of no triple hooks. If it goes into the summer months, I think we will see violations of it too.
Noted below are the DFO violation from the fall SFAB minute in 19/20
Most of the salmon violations are improper packaging fish, failure to record (forget) their catch and barb hooks. A lot of the problems are from Rec fisherman who just don't know the rules on how to process their catch and I see it all the time at the cleaning table as people cut the tail off their fish.
DFO – violations between Apr 1 to Nov 4, 2025. This info was taken from DFO meeting minute
Rec salmon:
o Area 19 violations for barb hooks, improper packaging, failure to record chinook on license.
o Area 20 a lot more violations, common violation improper packaging (cutting tail and pectoral fins off).
•Rec lingcod:
o Area 19 – not as many violations. Undersize size violations still occurring.
o Area 20 – majority of violation related to undersize retention.
•RCA violations:
o A couple RCA violations in Area 19 (fishing in closed areas), fishers didn’t know or drifted into the RCA accidentally.
o Area 20 didn’t observe RCA violations.
•Crab
o Area 19 – all undersize crab violations
o Area 20 couple of violations – majority for over limits of crab.
