SFBC Braggarts Fishing Derby

I'll try and pick the new dates by the weekend. Just have to check with Martin at Pedder Bay and make sure they don't have any conflicts. Stay tuned.

I'll be asking about a number of options...like I said it will largely depend on Pedder Bay not having another event going on. I wouldn't want to go any ealier...we need time to sell tickets and organize the event properly. I ws hoping for a couple of months. We won't have tickets and posters etc ready until mid - Feb.

I'm going to think about the new date tonight. I have talked to Pedder Bay and they are ok for the weekends I'm considering. They are the weekends of April 13/14 or May 11/12 or June 1/2. The June weekend has the best tides of the 3 but some out of town guides may already be too busy to make the derby

Ok, slept on it and decided. May 11th and 12th are the dates. Gives us a bit more time to catch up on the time we lost and the 12th is Mother's Day. So for all the guys from out of town considering coming it is an opportunity to give the wife or girlfriend a weekend in Victoria and a night of dancing, while you fish. WIN WIN!! I changed the details on my poster draft and will be emailing a copy to my printer this morning. We will be on schedule to have tickets ready for the middle of this month.
The guys at Wise Buys have committed to a very nice prize for the derby. I think we will invite the local food banks to have a drop off at the local marinas and anyone who donates a portion of their catch will be eligible for a draw to win the prize donated by them. Another great way the derby can support the community. I'm also working on a special draw prize for all the guides who participate. A package of free online and print advertising from various marketing companies. The Juan De Fuca Salmon Restoration Society have agreed to set up and man proper cooking facilities at Pedder Bay for the wind up on Sunday. They will sell burgers and hot dogs and such will the proceeds going to the Charters Creek Salmon Interpretive Centre in Sooke. Its a work in progress and there is still much more to do and many more opportunities to explore to make this a great weekend! Stay tuned.

I just printed off the derby tickets tonight and will have the dance/party tickets done this week as well. The poster layup is at the printers and I asked that we have them by mid month. Was told that would happen. So anyone's from out of town who wants tickets can PM me and I can make arrangements to mail them to you. To get the cheaper tickets based on the number of guys on the boat you must pay for all the tickets at the same time. We can't sell a single ticket at the lower rate, it would become an accounting nightmare. So as an example if all 3 fishing in your boat are SVIAC members the price per ticket is $40 each. You will have to pay $120 to get the 3 tickets at that price. Otherwise the tickets will be available by mid month at Island Outfitters, Wise Buys, Eagle Eye and Pedder Bay Marina.

I will be in Campbell River Feb 22/23 and will put up posters there and on the way down again. I could bring a stack of tickets and we could have a ticket sale at Rivers Sportsman for a couple of hours or so if there is enough interest from that area.

There is a logo/art work on the poster. I have Corel that I use to work on that stuff and not many can open those files, otherwise i would send you a copy. It is a peeled back banana with the front half of a salmon where the exposed part of the banana should be.

Is the cup decided by who can afford to rip half way to Renny or will it be a two best fish weigh in? Two best is how we do our Cowichan derby's (single day events). It works well with the size restrictions. Who catches fish consecutive days?....

All the waters of areas 18,19 & 20 are open in the derby. However we will not except any wild fish over 67 cm at the weigh scale. This is to make it fair for those who won't or can't run up past Sheringham Pt to get out of the early times Fraser restricted areas of 19 & 20. So it will likely be a hatchery fish that wins the trophy. Our choices were to go this route or to make the waters west of Sheringham out of bounds. This achieves our goal of a level playing field and eliminates having to worry about a boundary.

Should have added that you can keep a wild fish over 67cm west of Sheringham if that is what you want to do, you just can't enter it in the derby.

Just updating some new progress. We now have 2 high speed Scotty electric downriggers added to the prize pool, courtesy of Scotty and Perma Construction. Also a single nights stay for 2 at the Prestige Best Western in Sooke. Much more to come.

Posters and both derby and the private dance party tickets now ready and will be getting them out starting today. All the vendors will have them by Sunday. Available at Island Outfitters, Wise Buys, Eagle Eye and Pedder Bay. Chris73 will be heading up Island this weekend and will be putting up posters. He will also have a supply of tickets with him. PM him if you want to make arrangements to get your tickets from him. Cash or cheque only at all ticket vendors. Those who are not SVIAC members will get an annual membership included with your ticket purchase. Your membership card will come at a later date.

BTW for those of you from out of town who have never seen the Consenting Adults play. Here is a link from one of their many appearances at the annual "Buccaneer Days" dance held in Esquimalt. The dance draws 800 to 1000 people.

I will be in Parksville tomorrow at the Oceanside Place Arena and will put up posters in town and at the French Creek Marina. If someone wants to buy a ticket there tomorrow, we could meet at the arena between 10 am and 12 pm. PM me for my cell# if you are interested.

Feb 23 and 24 I will be in Campbell River and put up posters between Comox, Courtenay and CR. If people there want to meet me for a ticket purchase I suggest we meet at a certain time at te Rivers Sportsman.

Oh, btw, profisher said that a SVIAC membership is included in the ticket price - THAT IS NOT SO! Sorry for any confusion that may have caused. SVIAC members get a $20 discount on the derby ticket. The logistics of combining the derby registration with the SVIAC registration were too much of a hazzle so we decided to keep that separate. If you show me proof of a SVIAC membership (membership card or payment receipt) then I will sell you the tickets on the road for the SVIAC member price.

Pedder Bay Marina is generously offering the following to anyone participating in the derby.

Pedder Bay will offer the following deals for derby participants:

- 30% off on RV sites.
- rent a boat for 3 hours and the 4th hour of rental is free.
- free boat trailer parking for participants staying in the RV site, or participants choosing to moor at Pedder Bay for that weekend.
- 20% discount on daily moorage ($1.00 per foot instead of $1.25 per foot)

These offers are only in place during the derby weekend.

In order to obtain the discount the derby participant must show their derby ticket or purchase one at the time of check in.

I don't think I will be entering if the SVIAC members get a discount. Doesn't seem like a level playing field IMO. No disrespect to the organizer's but I thought this was an SFBC kind of thing. There are a lot of members on this forum that do not want to join the SVIAC for various reasons and I think this discount is just throwing air in the fire so to speak and further dividing the members that is so apparent right now on the forum.

I was behind the idea of it being a SFBC forum derby. There are one heck of a lot of members on here from all over the place. Many are willing to travel from great distances etc. to attend and have fun. When you start giving certain members of other organizations discount's it leaves a bad taste in peoples mouth's.
