SFBC Braggarts Fishing Derby

Sculpin, the last thing I want in any event I volunteer my time for is politics. I do this to raise money for causes I believe in and to have fun during the organizing process and the day(s) the event happens. I have feelings that the coalition should have started with a name that would have been more inviting to all of BC anglers. However I think the group had so much work to undertake to get the society up and running that the thought of a BC wide group would have felt overwhelming. Remember no one is getting paid and this is being done on their own time. Names are just that...names. They can be changed. If people step up, join and say they want to include their area in the mandate...it may happen.

I don't think there is any way the awarding of a peeling banana with a salmon protruding from it should be taken that seriously. It's a fun event for a worthy cause. I'd like to see it become a torch that gets passed around from community to community and charity to charity. I think that's what the original intent was anyway. It's highly unlikely that everyone will agree with any given years charity's mandate, but I don't see that as a reason for opting out on a fun weekend of BSing with a bunch of forum members in the same tract of water. Let's get this one in the books and and make next year bigger and better....

Just curious... which cause will be the benefactor of this derby? I've been fishing Sooke out of Pedder Bay since 1992 and I can think of a lot of local organizations which could use funds. Has anything been decided yet?

I hear you Rollie but you guy's brought it in by offering the discount to a certain organization that not every member of Sports Fishing BC agrees with. I was just pointing that out. This thing is supposed to be fun and I think it will be fun but leave the politics out of it. That was my entire point. I am all about having fun.

I don't think I will be entering if the SVIAC members get a discount. Doesn't seem like a level playing field IMO. No disrespect to the organizer's but I thought this was an SFBC kind of thing. There are a lot of members on this forum that do not want to join the SVIAC for various reasons and I think this discount is just throwing air in the fire so to speak and further dividing the members that is so apparent right now on the forum.

I was behind the idea of it being a SFBC forum derby. There are one heck of a lot of members on here from all over the place. Many are willing to travel from great distances etc. to attend and have fun. When you start giving certain members of other organizations discount's it leaves a bad taste in peoples mouth's.

as a coalition member I would happily decline the discount so that my northern, or more like mid island buddy feels welcome, (everyone else too) besides I want to go on your boat, we'll win that banana trophy and weld it to your roof. It's for the fish. How about $20. more for members (just kidding), ha ha.

or has heard of. The only thing I know about the SVIAC (and I had to google to actually figure out what that acronym meant)...is nothing really. Maybe news doesn't reach the mainland. lol. But I thought this was an SFBC event. I wont be so quick to opt out but I was under the impression that all that would be attending were SFBC members.

Is this derby open to anyone? SFBC, SVIAC or other?

Trendsetter, the proceeds are going to the Southern Vancouver Island Anglers Coalition. Their mandate is to have a full time paid lobbyist in Ottawa to represent the recreational fishery and fish.

Thanks for the response. I look forward to meeting you guys and showing off my shiny new banana trophy!;)

Thank you sir for the offer. You are a true sports fisher in my mind and I really enjoy fishing with you. We are not welding any banana to the roof of my boat however lol.

The derby idea was started here and hopefully many of you join us to make this the fun event I want it to be. However it would be foolish to make it exclusive to people who post here. This isn't a private club, the more the better. I'm not going to comment any further on the SVIAC as I'm not a director and would rather that someone from their board and who also is helping with this derby speak to this. Your turn governor!! lol

The idea was sponge by OBH's fight club thread. It was solely meant for members of this forum. I don't get the last part about "foolish to make it exclusive to people who post here".

If this is the attitude I'm out big time. Have fun at YOUR event.

No hard feelings here Rollie. Just not what I thought it was all about is all.

Sculpin, this event will be (hopefully) made up of a large contingent of SFBC people. It is a chance for us to get together and do what we love to do and have a fun weekend. Are you asking me to restrict this to people who post here only? I have to ask; will that bring new people here to start posting and to share their knowledge? The club that is hosting the private party holds 130 people and I need to sell it out to pay for the food, the band and what ever we decide to do for providing rides home afterwards. There has to be a balance struck between exclusivity and economics.

Even so I will say sorry Sculpin if you feel mislead. BTW if you decide to show up the banana trophy mounts with a simple clamp to your bowrail, so no welding or hole drilling required. You just have to explain WTF it is for a year when you can turn it over to the next sucker...I mean winner. LOL

I'm not the bad guy Rollie and I am all about supporting new recruitment. I was just thrown (and by the multiple PM's I received), many others were too by the discount to certain members of an organization. I just thought that was kind of unfair to others that would be entering the derby is all. I am on the fence right now about the SVIAC. I am a SFBC forum member that would like to attend said event. When certain people get a discount on the entry fee that leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

I know the whole thing is for the good of fish and I didn't want to drag this thing into a debate but that is how I feel about it.

Ok well how about this...a simple solution. My brains are smoking from thinking this late at night. I will instruct the vendors to honour the discount to those who supply their handle from this forum when they purchase their tickets. So those here will get the same discount. Better?

That sounds like a nice solution. Thank you.

Cheers,
John

Tell your friends!!! LOL

When I heard a discount was offered I thought it was a good thing. I thought, obviously just trying to point out the need for local (vic and van waters) people to step up and be aware and support a public entity to hold dfo/government accountable for our fishery's. And for people who are on the fence, do you really think having a loud outspoken lobby group and hopefully lobbyist in Ottawa (SIVAC). That just because its called 'southern' it would only effect area 18,19,20. If you lived in 11-30 you wouldt be beneficially effected by the work done? That is crazy. Im not just talking about you Scuplin Ive just seen a few others mention that didnt feel included when they only lived in Qualicum. I would guess that it will benefit all of the west coast. This derby sounds like it just for a all around fun derby as the main reason for having it which is awesome. I find it odd that when good people not doing it for the good of there company but of there hearts is finally doing something, instead of muttering about dfo in the internet, that people have a problem with it. If we take we have to give back some how and I cant see a better way of trying right now.

There needs to be a giant spoon emoticon for stirring....... It should take up about 8 lines..... Lipripper?
