SFBC Braggarts Fishing Derby

Maybe we should have a drinking contest at the party on Saturday night so there is something Trevor would want to win. :)

Now your talkin Rollie! Chris73 great idea but might be a tuff sell paying full pop for a charter then xtra to enter a derby they wont win . i will try but just saying might be a hard sell.

Come on Trevor, lighten up your pockets,it would be a good PR! (your team name on the Banana cup) it's a good cause and in the long run you may benifit from someone else holding your banana...:D

I think the guides should be mandated to enter the drinking contest....give some of us amateurs better odds if you boys are hanging over the gunnels chumming the water!! LOL

good times to look forward to in April. Thanks again organizers!

I would suspect the heavy drinking part of guiding doesn'ttake anything away from their apparent fishing prowess ... It only makes them crustier and more hungover :D

I think some of the guides down here are just like FedEx. They are good at more than just one thing!!! I think drinking would be the 2nd best thing they know how to do. Maybe we could get the band to play a Polka or a Tango to see us all humbled!!!! lol

I didn't have a whole lotta free time this week to promote the derby. I did make it out to Sooke one day and made the best use of my time to get the word out about the derby. Just heard that the Prestige Hotel has given us something that is already to pick up. Also Eagle Eye Outfitters will sell tickets in Sooke and they will throw something at the pile. Bill down at Peetz will support the cause with something as well. A few of you from up Island have asked your local suppliers to help and have indicated they have prizes coming too. Next week I will have more time to hit up some of the bigger potential sponsors and see what happens. My company will throw in some boat size fire extinguishers. Hopefully some of the tackle guys will come through as they usually do. I do have a sponsor letter and itinerary sheet in word 7 if anyone up Island would like a digital copy to print off. If you know someone who might donate to the cause the letter will help you sell the derby to them. Send me a PM with your email.

Looks like the derby falls on the same weekend as the "Just for the Halibut" derby

where did that come from? Its usually that time in May.

Ward emailed me last week and said they were considering either the long weekend in May or the same weekend of the Banana Challenge. If this is a notice of their decision I guess we have to change to another weekend. The posters haven't Been printed, just have to change the Bar booking. I haven' t heard from Ward that they choose these dates yet. Is this officially up somewhere, their site?

Yes it does< I picked this weekend originally because it was 3 weeks before they normally have the halibut derby. I thought it was always around the 2nd week of May.

I think it has to do with there only being the one good weekend in both May and April for Hali tides. When both Sat & Sun have long periods of slower currents. The weekend in May is the long weekend. I think they were worried that many people like to get away with families on the long weekends, so ticket sales would suffer. I also know they waited until now to announce picking the April dates so they could get a better feel on the likelihood of Hali being open in April. The recent Hali meetings have obviously given them hope that they will be open.

So I guess the question now is who would like the derby to be earlier in April or sometime in May? The Sidney derby is the first weekend in May so it would have to be after that one?

IMHO: Whatever is decided, it should happen soon as possible as the guys up-Island and those who have to book the time off, need as much advance warning as possible. Trying to gain a consensus on a Forum is next to impossible.

Again, good on you Rollie for weathering the storm while organizing this.

Ya that sucks. Nothing like picking a date working towards it and then having the steamroller announce... oh well. The fella I was hoping to fish with was busy with hali clients on the original weekend so I was looking to get on another boat, maeby this will work out better!! It's all for fun anyway.
