Scotty HP Digital Counters...They Keep Dying....

I don't get it? Scotty is a great company overall - so why are they letting this poor quality part issue last so long. They are long overdue for a proper fix to solve this problem IMHO. Get a different supplier or redesign this part.

They probably only cost Scotty $4 each, but like Rain City said, you gotta buy 200,000 of them to get that price lol.

We do not have to many digital counter issues on the boat I fish on, but as a back up there are manual counters are installed.
We had a good friend install the counters because he has done it before and knows his Scotty stuff.

If we have a digital counter go down, we pull the plug out of the lid and set the counter to 0 and continue fishing. Change the digital counter back at the dock.

Here are some photos of the installation a friend installed in the DRs

I'm surprised Scotty doesn't sell a manual counter for the high speed DR. Or an optional back up kit to add a manual counter.

We have not used the manual counters in a while, that is why the numbers are different. We also use the scotty thick blue end line and rubber snubber on 20lb balls.

My new used riggers came with dead counters. Off to Pacific Angler for some new ones.

got the glass disc in just waiting on the grommets so for a pr if you guys want to do this conversion $5 for a pr and Canada letter post at cost

Ok it's been a year do I upgrade? Are the counters still crap? 🤔 I can't believe I am saying this but I have to run 18lb balls...I hate fishing deep but when fish Nanaimo its pain in butt fishing 15s 200 plus deep.

I have fish eye lenses from AliExpress and added manual counters as back ups. The lenses are only a couple bucks each.

What I find interesting is there is a 10% difference in what the manual and digital counters read. Electronic reeads 110-115' when the manual says 100.

Do it. New counters seem ok. Only had one die in the first 2 weeks. Others have been fine.

I just always have a spare new one and generally when a newer one dies I let it dry on the dash and seems to start working.

Hope the new ones last but not sure yet
I had two counters crap out on me the same way last week. The screen and counter still work, but they don't turn off or reset. I have to take the battery out to turn it off. Luckily I have a full spare lid with a counter and another brand new counter. But this is getting annoying. I've probably gone through a dozen of them. Always kept dry.

I've had 2106s for almost a decade now. The original, sealed, counters lasted 7 years. Batteries ran out within a few days of each other. Replaced with the newer style (replaceable battery), no issues since.

I used to think this was because my boat stays in the Okanagan most of the year, and in a carport at that. But the last few years we've been leaving it at the Sunshine Coast from Easter through to mid summer, parked in a friend's yard. Travel cover on boat, but riggers out in the open like you guys do. No idea why mine just work.

i have one the just resets itself while down deep most annoying

Probably because yours don't get worked that hard. You see, once you catch a fish you have to bring the ball back up and reset your gear. When you eventually get good at it, you'll have to do that several times times a day. 😉

The digital scotty counters that I repaired two years ago are working fine and on the original batteries installed after the repair. My boat and the down riggers are in the sun on saltwater all summer which subjects them to a lot of heat cool cycles which I believe is the primary reason for the seal breaking between the plastic lens and the counter body. If you have the time here it is again and it is a very simple procedures. I removed the lens from the body of the counter. The lens came off both the defective counters relatively easy, by pushing my pocket knife blade between the lens and the black body. It seemed unusually easy, since the counter depends on the seal between the lens and the body to protect the electronics from moisture and salt. Then I removed the lens the electronic component's (one simple board) dropped out easily. I washed down the board, body and lens with an aerosol electronic cleaner and let them sun dry for about 20 minutes. Then I popped the board back in the body which is very simple and silicone the lens on to the body and rapped a couple of elastics around the body and the lens. I used Ultra Black Silicone used for gaskets in automotives (because I had it). The black worked perfect but it did uglified the counter a bit as the black shows on the perimeter of the lens, where clear would look OEM. I installed the two repaired counters back on the down riggers and they have worked perfectly for two and a half seasons. I think that this procedure may even solve the reset/on off button problem. P.S. I have gotten used to the black silicon between the lens and the body and it now looks OEM to me. I would stick with the Ultra Black Silicone it is expensive but it's very tuff.

Best hypothesis I've heard yet.
