Scotty HP Digital Counters...They Keep Dying....

Well, maybe bottom tracking isn't for everyone. Similar to running 3 riggers isn't for everyone. Just thinking that if Scotty developed an add on unit there is a fairly good market for those of us who fish close to the bottom a lot (as I do). I blow through 3-4 swivel base plates each season fishing some pretty challenging areas that hold fish. Downside is you really need to be on the riggers to move the gear up/down - one distraction such as a bite can be fatal to a swivel base. I would pay $ for bottom tracking. I like the simplicity of Scotty and ease of servicing them, and thus not investing in the Cannons - but its sure tempting.

Just carry a spare counter and a spare lid with a new counter already installed ready to go. Done.
If they are as unreliable as they seem to be and Scotty does not appear to be addressing the problem, maybe they should include a spare cover and counter with the package. When it fails, you just swap out as you suggest, keep on fishing and then take the crapped out one back to Scotty or any of their dealers for free exchange. Done.

I just keep a spare counter on board. It only takes a couple minutes to swap one out.

I was wondering how long it would take for someone to bring up the swivel bases breaking. I've gone through way more bases than digital counters. I'm still on the same counters since 2018 - I should probably replace my spare back ups as they'll probably go first...

Is it the bases actually breaking or the detent pin hole stretching out?

Speaking for myself, its the later. I'm planning to swap sides with my riggers, so the worn spot on the baseplate will no longer be the active holding position. ?
Good idea.

I’m curious why they won’t just make the HP with the digital counter? I’ve seen the few mod jobs on here, seems like a no brainer

My swivel bases are from 06 and no problems yet
Is this a problem with the newer bases breaking?
What weight of cannonballs are you running? if you’re running 18 or 20s and especially if you have the boom extended, that leverage tends to stretch the detent pin hole. I imagine if one didn’t want the rotation release lever in the exact same location that you could rotate 45°. Getting hung up on the bottom and trying to pull your cannonball free would not be helping either.

My 2023 1106 with 15lb weight, fully extended boom, got snagged on someone else's old canonball rig on the bottom. Literally snagged their old cable and weight. Before I could react and stop the boat, the force yanked the boom and the torque turned the rigger and damaged the baseplate detent. Ever since, that detent position has been useless. I wouldn't say the product is to blame...it was clearly overstressed. I was surprised that nothing worse happened.

I have to do a few adjustmentment to mine.. just in Norway right now but will let u know what I have done when I get back
if your out there there is a group that done a bottom tracking mod on scotties

I run 15 pound balls even up to 300 feet. Boom are in tight. I've hung up the odd time.

Scotty supplies a template for the old style counter mod to a 2106. Hell they even sent me two old style counters and nuts for free. Got a small 30 mm mag lense from ali baba and it is amazing how easy it was to install and sure gives peace of mind. Great addition

We blew out 2 bases in one day fishing rats nose a few years back. That started my delve into making stainless rigger basses.
