Scotty HP Digital Counters...They Keep Dying....

I really like Scotty - they have given me great customer service over the years and they make great products. I have a pair of 1106 downriggers and they have run great for 20 years!

What I do not get is these ongoing issues with the digital counters! They need to fix this properly/asap and stop just sending folks replacement products that are still defective.

Second, they need to come up with a boom mounted rod holder that has a metal insert that does not degrade/oxidize over time and run the risk of breaking and losing your rod and reel!

3rd suggestion would be to have their downriggers link up to your depth sounder to raise and lower with the depth. I mean Cannon has had this feature for almost 20 years! C'mon Scotty - just do it! My 2 bits.

Best idea I've heard in years. Man that would be a game changer for Scotty if they could come up with something that interfaces with your sounder. There would be a line up at the tackle store for orders waiting to be filled.

Not to sure they’d be able to pull off an auto up down feature. Seems like it would be a lot more complicated than something as simple as a digital counter and would probably mean even less stuff would be covered by warranty. On the positive side, my old downriggers with the mechanical counters are still going strong.

One could check sales numbers and see if the Canon auto up and down are out selling the Scotty line. I don’t think they are, and that for me would be enough data to not implement such a feature into the existing lineup.

The cannons have more things that break and if you power down too much on accident then the line jumps off the spool. Super fun. The switches are always broken or worn out. To do a bottom lock feature, you wpuld have to turn a mechanical reliable machine into and electronic piece of crap. For what. Because your too lazy to run your gear?

No biggie, just make the integrated depth sounder up/down an option for those who want it/pay for it. Keep the old/simple version for those who want it.

My auto up/down technology is called “Pay attention to sounder and press button or release brake”. Generally pretty reliable unless deployed in tandem with fish whistle technology

Just had mine replaced this morning by Scotty in Sydney. I asked if there was anything I could do to prevent failure and he said not really. Some fail others don’t. Didn’t sound like they had made any recent revisions to increase reliability. 😤

Scotty is replacing my most recent replacements as well which is nice.

As for bottom lock feature on a downrigger, the only time I would potentially use a feature such as that would be further up the water column to vary my depths more often than I do manually. If my sounder marked a big bait ball... bzzzzz, the rigger would adjust to that level. But you would have to adjust your reel drag and either loosen your drag or take in slack, so until their is an electric reel that follows the same pattern it's pretty useless for me. Now, if I could get my reels to communicate with my sounder and stay on bottom as I drift for bottom fish... that would be awesome.

The cheap-butt Daiwa M-One reels I run will keep line tension but still have enough drag to drop the DR balls without any line creep.

I just replaced a set finally. Mine died after 8 years. I honestly don’t think I could go back to the 1106s. Was fishing on a boat last weekend that had them and felt like I was waiting for ever for them to come up.

well i have a silly set of digi counters that reset themselves to zero when i am dropping them down

The standing joke is that you could check your email or read a short novel as you’re waiting for them to come up.
