Port Renfrew 2009 Season

Reality check again....it doesn't matter where anyone fishes..skunks or taking fish smaller than you thought you might catch happens all the time, anywhere. Big springs are TROPHY sport fish...just like Black Marlin and Blue Tuna. Or like a 6 point white tail. If everyone got them every time they wouldn't be highly sought after TROPHIES!!!! Remind your customers of this fact, if they don't get it...to bad.

C'mon, when I guided I hoped my guests were happy so I would get some grease and another booking the following year. I really felt embarrased when I had to ask my guest ( who did not have their expectatins met) for the grand total at the end of the day. The big fish and or numbers were more for me and my guiding ego than about the customer and how happy he was. Providing him with the total experience out of the goodness of my heart. No way. Money and pride.

Sure there were some great guests who I wanted to treat , but if they were totally happy with pinks I still would have focussed on the slabs for reasons mentioned above.

Then again , I eventually burned out due to the #$%^ pressure I put on myself.

Take care guys,

HL

Ho's are in the river so they should be coming in closer. nabbed a few about a mile out from San Juan on the weekend but not in any great numbers yet. This rain should spur them on though

My girlfriend and I are heading there for the weekend for a coho fishing/mushroom picking extravaganza. Just to double check, its 2 wild and 2 hatch in the bay, and 2 hatch outside right?

See you guys out there!

Dudds, you and I have the very same interests (as long as you are talking about cooking mushrooms). Been out foraging a couple of times already, and nothing found except around Bamfield. Need to let the rain soak in a bit longer I think. But you will definitely hit some fish. I will be out for both too, so we should compare notes. Have fun!

Holy smokes! 30 lbs! thats great! I've never picked out this way but have heard its the best on the island. We're going to do some exploring and see what we can find - Mostly between renny and sooke. Are you talking Chantrelles or others as well?

S2 roger on the cooking kind. Jaimie and I did a bit in the north island and ended up with a few lbs of chantrelles. We should definitely connect. I'll let you know how this weekend goes anyways.

Good to know it's on out there. Time for a trip I guess! I took a little peek out towards the Nat, and it was very sparse. i am done salmon fishing for a while, and it is time to load up on fungus. Hope you guys got into them Dudds. We should do a trip. There are a few species worth harvesting out there, and well worth the drive if they are out.

Just got back from my opening day of hunting out in renfrew stopped by the marina on my way home to check the boat out.Saw quite a few nice coho and every boat was full of those big squids, water looked ugly.
There was at least 15 guys trying to snag fish off the bridge, saw one guy trying to haul one up onto the bridge.

Man was it crazy for Coho at the bank! Non-stop action, too bad they were 98% wild. Oh well, still fun. The sea lions are getting a bit out of hand. One followed our boat for quite a while and took 3 plus our gear from us.

That is exactly what I looked for, I was not the only one thinking I had caught clipped pinks, I have heard several others say that they had caught them as well. Like I said I will take a closer look in the freezer. Thanks. By the way nice coho! That is a monster.

Not to change the subject and I know I am a little late, but we caught two fin cliped pinks this year up in Port McNeill. I filled out the recovery cards and wrote Pink/Hummpy on them. We will see what comes back.

And yes I can tell the difference, 2 years of fish amd wildlife management school plus 15 years in fisheries related work does help a little bit:D

Cheers

I am wondering if the pinks that returned to cowichan bay were clipped fish? This would be far fetched, but a deff possibility.

Just got back. Overall trip was decent. There are some coho inside the canbuoy and some pinks around. We never ended up landing a squid, but we got into a school of them and had one on. both rods started doing weird stuff, it was like they were being hit but the rod would come up before going down then it would be gone - finally I checked one side and it was empty and then the other rod starts pulling line. My gf had it on but eventually the hooks pulled out and we ended up with a small piece of squid on a her hook! I think what the squid were mostly doing was grabbing the clip - thats the only thing that would explain the rods going up first then not hooking anything. anyways, a guy at the dock gave us one and I tried some last night - not bad.

We fished for a couple hours saturday - didn't get up early, 930-12 - then got blown off so picked mushrooms. Sunday was beautiful and calm, it was hard to leave. We picked a few more mushrooms on our way out sunday. We found a pretty sweet spot but it had been picked already. Still, there were alot of shrooms there and all said and done we had 9 lbs.

Another point of interest - I've probably fished renfrew a dozen times, and for the first time there were swells crashing on the sand spit right at the river mouth! It was a bit of a shock considering the size of my boat - seeing guys surfing rollers crashing where we're trying to get through! Is this fairly common??

Yes it is Dudds. Just stay to the left, hug the shore and time your entry into the break. (And try not to run over any surfers!):D

Heh, Tsquared, assume you mean stay to the left as you're coming in, not as you're going out??? ;)

Capt D: there will be surfable waves on and off in the river mouth from now til April or so. Depends on ocean swell...I'd say if buoys show 7 feet or bigger, from west to south-west direction, then there's a reasonable chance of surf. You can check out wave conditions from links here:
http://www.fishingportrenfrew.ca/weather.html

The waves come in sets, with lulls in between....so be patient and wait for the lull. And don't stall!

YES!!! Sorry for not being clearer. It's usually when we're coming back in we see the surfers.(Fishermen get up earlier than surfers, come to think of it)
