Port Renfrew 2009 Season

My last few days out there I did the same. Went out a bit and fished for pinks and coho. Noticed that a lot of the pinks were clipped, someone told me that they were from American rivers and that we don't clip pinks, any truth to this? Thursday it seemed that every coho was a hatch and Friday almost all were wild. Kelly, I guess I have to play around with the colours more. I get stuck with a couple and keep using them even if it is slow. Like the bloody nose and red chrome.

That would be the SW Corner of the closure! :)

I have never in my life caught a hatchery pink. are you sure they wernt feeder springs or coho's?. I dont think they have hatcheries for pinks becuase they dont seem to be in to much trouble.

Seems like the coho fishing is getting hot in Renfrew. Is this a place I could fish safely in my mini boat? I don't need any more meat, but I would love to get onto some good C&R before school starts again.

Closure... I didn't think you Americans paid any attention to the closure. Last time I was out there where two yankee boats fishing in it. One was from Idaho and the other from Washington. They didn't even seem to know it was closed until we informed them. Just cause they see someone fishing there doesn't mean they can!!! This isn't a shared fishery like in the USA. In fact we have very little "in common".

Take only what you need.

Glad to see you are still stirring the pot? I thought for a bit YOU would lose your sarcasm and racial slurs? Guess I was wrong, sorry that won't happen again! You really want to start this?

Is it just you or, are all Canadian Indians as dumb? I am thinking it is just YOU! You do know if your IQ is less than 69, you are considered a moron! It takes below 20 to be an idiot! Idiot!

Last time I was out there, I saw a Canadian boat drift across the line! So, maybe since there are multi-country offenders here, DFO should just lift the closure? But, then you won't have any special rights there to gloat about, would you? That really is one of your more idiot comments you have made!

You really enjoy pointing out, your Indian rights, don't you? Honestly... I really don't care about any of your rights! And last time I checked YOU really don't have any right pointing out anything to anyone, especially me! It isn't in your treaty!</u>

Your are right, there is one thing NOT in common… YOU DON'T HAVE AND NEVER WILL HAVE THE RIGHT TO 50% OF THE TAC! And, I am really going to laugh my arse off, when YOU find out, those precious fishing rights you keep talking and throwing in everyones face, will continue to fall under final control of DFO, Not the first nations; to include, you are soon going to havie to obtain a "license" for your that valuable "food" and "ceremonial" right of yours. I am really going to love that! :D:D:D

I'd rather have an American steal a fish from a Canadian closed area than someone like FA betray a fellow fisherman for a cord of firewood! [xx(] Cheap scum!

Thanks for the coordinates Charlie! Got 3/4 of the way there and the one piece of electronics that I kept on the boat that I didn't replace crapped out! Ya you guessed it... the chart plotter.... turned around and went back to camper just in time for the whales... Foggy and Big Swells. Got a 22 early at camper though, so it wasn't a total loss of a day... Saw a 44 at the dock... Guess I'll get em next time Roe Bags... :(

Still learning to identify these guys, maybe(probably) I am wrong. I look at tail spots, scales, mouth and noticed that many were beginning to develop humps. Size about 5 lbs. What else could they be, jack springs? I was surprised as well because I have never seen a clipped pink but was told that there are some US fish that are clipped. I will look closer, see what I actually have.

Get yourself a copy of the regs ;) It's all there.

Charlie, You have the qualities to be a great Canadian Fisheries minister. HAAA HAAAAA

i just got back form 4 days of fishing,
we fished logan and camper every morning from about 5:30-noon. Most boats got a feeder or two, the odd boat got a 20+lb fish, but there was no fast or furious action and many boats empty, camper was fishing better than logan though.

For the afternoons we headed out to 400-500' of water and were able to get our limits of feeders and coho in about an hour with lots of double headers, including a pair of 15+18lb springs :) And most of the coho were hatchery too[^]

re "Clipped pinks"...embarrassed to even post it, but since on the topic...

Fishing for pinks in Sooke a couple weeks ago, into them pretty steadily in the deep water, lots of wild coho thrown back, pinks into the boat. Got to the dock, only to find one of the pinks had clipped fin....dammit, a small spring. Luckily was within legal limit and size, but would not have kept it if we had realized. So...an understandable error, at least from my side of things. [:I]

Spotted tails...both have.
Black gums...both have.

But, differences:
- springs have bigger scales, pinks tiny and slimy (though may be hard to tell unless side by side)
- springs spots small, pinks more oval and splotchy
- springs have more and sharper teeth (that one doesn't work well though, not always clear)
- springs have teeth on tongue, pinks don't
- springs have black mouth, pinks have white in mouth (again, a side by side comparison easy...)

Lesson learned...even in the midst of pink after pink, make sure to double check!

Fished Monday in Renfrew.

Good bite at Camper from 7-9 am, everyone playing fish. We caught a 30 and 18, plus a few that got away...one broken leader, one straightened hook.

Unfortunately, too rough to get out to the Bank in my boat....safety first can be a *****.

Here's my buddy Kevin with his first 30...just barely, but it counts. :D

Easiest way to tell a spring from a pink beside the boat:
1) See any silver shine on the tail? Yes, then it's a spring or a coho. Then check for spots - coho does not have spots all over the tail.
If no silver shine on the tail - tail looks dark, see spots = pink. No spots, most likely a sockeye.

I find that the silver shine on the tail distinguishes the pinks and little springs the easiest - no need to pry open their mouth or stick your finger into their mouth or count rows of scales...etc

Nice fish Juandesooka! Got there just as the fun was ending..:( Had 2 on and got one into the boat.... Some really good fish caught there that morning for sure... No Kidding it was rough out there on the bank!

OMG, pinks are the only species to have very noticeable black OVAL spots on it's tail.

Chinook have forked heavily spotted tails and black gums and tongues.

Coho have thick caudal wrists, a very square silver tail that bears no spots and brilliant white gums

Chum and sockeye are easier to confuse with one another but both have large glassy eyes and small scales. The similarities stop there. Chum will almost always bear light purple par marks that run vertically down the length of the fish. Chum are the only species to have a white tipped anal fin.

Get a copy of the saltwater synopsis if you are in doubt. We need these small feeder springs for runs to come.
