Have looked at guides only confusion for me was pinks and smaller(?) springs. Still learning, no probs with coho and springs. lol. Thanks for the advice!
Like I said, and you cannot mistake a pink. Look for the very obvious black ovals covering the entire forked tail. Don't worry about anything else. This is the only species with these unmistakable markings.
That is exactly what I looked for, I was not the only one thinking I had caught clipped pinks, I have heard several others say that they had caught them as well. Like I said I will take a closer look in the freezer. Thanks. By the way nice coho! That is a monster.
Springs are terrible and probably gone, very very VERY slow. Lotsa nice big fat Coho tho, and Humboldt Squids for something different. I've officially switched over to targetting Springs. There is the odd little feeder on the Bank, and a lot of feeders(10-15 pounds) on the bottom in 70-200 feet off the harbour mouth, but that's it.
We did a family trip to the beach and popped by the marina at Renny, Rex said she is very is pretty slow for the amount of guys out in the derby. SUre was busy though[8D]
Thanks LastChance. Are there coho onshore? - my boat is not big enough to even consider heading out to the banks, but if there is good action in the tide lines it might be worth the trip still.
Back from 3 days of fishing Rennie.Springs are almost non existent along the beach but the bank is loaded with coho.
Friday on the bank was astounding! Birds by the thousands following a line of krill that stretched for miles.herring feeding on the krill and coho feeding on the herring.Oh, and humpbacks by the dozen. Picked up our limit on coho in about 10 minutes-average one 12lbs largest 16+.
Halibut was more difficult and we definitely worked to get our limit.
Saturday morning was along the beach from Owen to Logan. No springs save for one jack and only two wild coho. Knocked off two Humboldt squid about 3ft long at Cullite(wtf??)-made for some tasty calimari though.Crab trap was full of females
Sunday was off Carmanah & Nitinat. Scraped up 2 more hali before we got blown off. Nasty morning.Only managed 6 knots as top speed back so day was shot.
Lots of salmon in the estuary when we left. All this rain should spur them on.All in all a decent trip.
Some pics from friday:
As to hali's on the bank, there hasn't been a lot of bigguns as of late. I'm going to be anchoring up in the inshore honey holes this weekend with a crew, so we'll see what comes up.
Just back.
saw ALOT OF PINKS AND COHOS AND LITTLE BUTTS AND HAPPY CUSTOMERS \
and was all good.
You big commercial guide guys that are bitching and complaining about the lack of big springs. Tone it down man./
There are lots of big cohos and pinks and little butts Thewest Coast experience of big water and big surf with something big and silver caught. Thats what they want.
Don't take more..
Thank you to to,Ditiwanit People.
you guys are totally cool man. Take waht you need ...leave the rest.
You guys should pick up the ball and take responsiblity. Lead by example and communicate.
People need leadership and direction. Tbis should come from you.
Its your time.
there are lots of fish in the san juan and nitinat.
I agree that a lot of people are happy with the whole west coast experience with a variety of goodies we can catch. _BUT_, anyone with a pulse and a fishing rod can catch Coho, Pinks, and Swiftsure "tennis raquet" halibut that will bite a piece of re-bar painted white with a hook. And an awfull lot of people are happy to have gone out and done just that, I've put more then my share of smiles on peoples faces stopping at the groundfish spots on the way back, getting the kids out of thier sea-sickness induced slumber and onto some fish that come quickly and easily. And lots of people come do that with me year after year.
The trouble (and grumpy guide syndrome) comes when someone who can do all of the above wants a truly quality fish pays a guide his fee to use his gear and knowledge to up his chances. Fishing is fishing, but most guides I know really want to give the people who book with them %110 of their moneys worth, so sometimes we get a little crabby when we send our clients home with a load of pinks and coho's that are just like the same ones they have in the freezer.
agree with LC 100% - when people come out to catch big springs and end up with pinks as a guide you tend to feel bad. But its about being honest with your guests and telling them whats happening out there. If its pinks and coho and ping pong paddles then tell them.
I tell them, do you want to grind it out all day for one or two big fish or go out and catch lots of fish all day - 99% will choose lots of fish.
Renfrew is different then down here I'm sure as you get more hardcores going up that way. We all want big fish but but you can't control the ocean and getting torn up about it will just burn you out.
