Spent all of last week fishing Port Hardy. Finally had some calm waters to fish up there, too bad the fishing was so slow. In the 4 1/2 days we spent fishing only really had 3 hours of action. Fished one evening at a local hot spot and was the only boat there. Ended up with three Chinook (11, 28 and 41). Other than that, except for some occassional pinks and undersized Chinook (one 7 pound Coho) it was pretty dismal. Even spent the better part of the day at Pine and could only scratch up one medium sized Ling for our efforts. Oh well, better luck next year.

(People keep saying the runs are late. Are they so late we're still waiting for last years?)
if u find it so horrible here try campbell river...... o right u guys already fished that out

Normally I'm up for a little Yank bashin (when they deserve it). However, I don't think it was the Americans that built the hydro dams on the Campbell River water system. I think we better have a good look in the mirror regarding the state of fishing around Campbell river.
ill give u a little there , its just a little frustrating when people a re willing to cut down our area when the state of thiers is dismal, any fish caught should be considered a prize, not dissapointment because the freezer isint full for the winter

Geez guys, have a little more coffee. I was just giving a report not bashing the country or the fishing. I take one week a year for a fishing trip to Vancouver Island because why...Yes, the fishing is better and I enjoy getting away for some R&R. I never keep more than a few that I'll use during the year.

So here's a new report to keep everybody happy. The fishing was great, couldn't keep them off the hook. We released everything we caught to help preserve the runs and even transported some live breeding stock from our home waters to add to them. See ya next year.

(By the way, I thought the whole reason the Canadian Fisheries put restrictions on commercial fishing was to promote sports fishing and protect the tourism dollars coming into the country).

:D :D :D haha that was pretty good chinookie...

sory just venting a little had a bad day around some tourists that had no business being on the water knowing as little as they did , caused for a bad day for a few boats

as for our gov tourism seem to be the direction they are going, some agree some dont,
the order that was negotiated between the user groups and dfo is

1 conservation 2 native food fish 3 commercial 4 recreational

that order seems to rotate as too who has the better lobbiest and makes the most noise.

it seems to be followed for sockeye , because the stocks are low now and they can just close the whole fishery !!!
but the spring fishery seems to be going towards the recreational side, the commercial trollers have really been screwed on this one.
they geat a few months in spring and are very limited on thier catch.

if u were ever here in the 70 80 and early 90s u would have seen that the commercial fishery was by far more valuable to the small towns along the coast than tourism, with thousands of boats in hardy bay, all needing repairs , fuel , grub , offloading etc. the commercial fishing but hundreds of kids thru colledge and university with good paying summer jobs either on the docks, or deckhanding. that isint happening now . the tourists are a nice boost for the towns in the summer but it doesnt help to make our towns, tourism doesnt bring young families to live here, and be part of the community..
if u get a chance drop by the musiem in hardy they have a display on the history of fishing there , its really interesting, and shows the importance commercial fishing was .

if I get a chance, next time in Hardy I'll check out the museum. As far as commercial vs. rec, just reiterating what I've read...of course I'm sure all I've read was put out from the rule makers point of view to make it sound good. No political statements here, just hoping to enjoy some recreational fishing once or twice a year while I still can. enjoy.

Weedeater.. yes-, a person has to wonder how a vibrant commercial fishery was reduced to a shell in such a few short years. But it is not the fault of the sportsfishery, as some commercial troll organization would have us believe. There is too much blame to focus on any one factor-- unless it is slow reactive fisheries management.

And I have to correct your understanding of the DFO Allocation policy . The commercial fishery does not have priority rights to all species.
quote:Allocation Principle 4 - Recreational
After conservation needs are met, and priority access for First
Nations is addressed, recreational anglers will be provided:
· Priority to directed fisheries on chinook and coho
salmon
· Predictable and stable fishing opportunities for sockeye,
pink and chum salmon

So there you have it-- we get first kick at the can ( but not exclusive rights) for chinook and coho, after conservation and Natives.
This policy is the only thing that has kept us on the water... the losers?? The trollers....

Fished Hardy Aug 4-8. Short report - DEAD SLOW. Don't get me wrong, I know that guides and people who know the area inside out have been getting some pretty good fish now and then but let's call a spade a spade. Bottom fishing has been great, salmon fishing has sucked.

We stayed at a lodge with about 30 other people and a lot of them have been fishing Hardy for 6+ years. In 4 1/2 days Duval point produced a couple of pinks and a few tiny feeder springs (there was a pretty decent bite Friday morning though but we had to leave early). Gordons produced 4-5 decent springs. We trolled Castle point a lot and managed a couple of springs in mid twenties and lost a hog right at the boat but all in all it was just painfully slow. In three days that we fished Castle we saw two other springs caught and nothing else. In total, between 30 people at the lodge I think we got about 10 springs with nothing above 25, 2 hatchery coho and some pinks. By the way, this is not just this week. All of the well knows spots have been dead most of the summer. Even the number of boats within 10 miles of Hardy is about a quarter of what it was last year.

Just to spice things up weather turned down right nasty Monday and Tuesday and we got blown of the water by about 2pm.

On the bright side, bottom fishing has been pretty good with a lot of chicken size halibut coming in and plenty of snapper and such. Didn't really devote too much time to it but we managed to get some hefty rock fish and a couple of lings. My buddy managed to hook something that sounded to the bottom and wouldn't move even after 1/2 hour of tugging. Then big swells started rolling in and as unfortunate as it was we had to get the hell out of there. Small boat, what can you do.

Seems to me that if you want to catch salmon, be prepared to run 20+ miles out. Not sure if that's what most people have in mind when they go fishing in Hardy. Maybe a miracle will happen and a whole bunch of fish will fall out of the sky and land right at Duval point. Every single person that I talked to said that this is the absolute worst year they have ever seen.

I really hope that things turn around next year or later this summer.

Anchovies in green TH, 7ft leader produced most of our fish. Couple fish deep. Really deep.

i think we have just been spoiled here for too long running 20 plus miles is the norm in many places, especially on the west coast. i think things are just late the bigger springs we caught all week were carrying really small egg sacks if that has any bearing??
and the water is only in the low 50s, it was a crazy winter around here looks like the summer is following suit

the big coho have shown up, but u need to run to area 11 and 10, weather yesterday was golden not a wave all day had several double headers of real nice coho all 12+, had to run away from them to get some springs

I was in Port Hardy at the launch ramp near the ferry dock. I saw fishermen bringing in several red snappers. I also saw lots of boats fishing outside of Hardy Bay. I spotted a humpback whale swimming there.

Just got back from 5 days at Hardy... fished the same spots I've fished for years, Masterman,Castle, Duval, Daphne, and worked the Gordons hard... Tally after 5 days... 4 pinks, 1 hali, variety of cod...lots of pops.. water was great first 4 days.... Guide boats coming in from afar with good results... 177 lb. hali at Quarterdeck couple of nights ago.... bycatch on an anchovie ??
