Could it be too many boats chasing too few fish? Maybe it just three kinds of fisherman one that shares all, one that shares nothing and one somewhere in between. I have fished with a guy that thought that two boats were a crowd. He felt very uncomfortable with just a few boats around. (Mental note: don’t take him to the chum derby) A few years back we had a guide and several other boats take a run up to Butte Inlet from Brown’s Bay. The guide showed us a few spots, which we each took, and we all kept in radio contact. The plan was to find the fish and all would meet there. Didn’t catch any springs but sure hit and released a lot of lings. We rafted up at lunchtime and swapped lies, food, and beverages. Meet some new friends that I have since gone fishing with. It was a great trip. It’s good to know you have buddy boats and the chance of hooking some fish. Not to mention the safety and navigation questions resolved. I can total understand not giving out GPS spots but come on, some of us like to look at our charts and do a little homework. I don’t think if you gave a general location that it would do any harm. After all, have you never gone to the “library” and sat there reading a chart and dreamed of fishing somewhere new? GLG

Heading up to Duval Point Lodge next week (July 28 - Aug 1). Anything new to report on Chinook and Coho runs moving into the area? Should start seeing some of the larger Coho showing up soon I'd think. Also, any of you locals have any news on weather, especially wind forcasts for next week. It's almost a guarantee that it will be the windiest week of the year while I'm there so let me apologize now. Thanks.

Fishing is hot and cold. You will be there for good hali tides, the small 4-6' tides should allow for some good hali fishing.

Good luck

Now there's what we need ...some good reports....this thread wasn't supposed to turn into a sheep controversy...Thanks..

Yes, thanks for the reports they do get the blood churning to get up there. Serengeti, "nothing big 20-28 lbs" sounds fine to me :). See you on the water, we'll be the wolves dressed in sheeps clothing.

David, thanks for the information. I am in Hardy now and noticed you out fishing today. Hope you did better than us. All we got was a couple of pinks. I only wish other guides would have the same business sense you do. When it is too expensive to trailer my own boat, I wonder where i'll be dropping my cash, could it be an airfare and a guide for a couple of days. I wonder.

I know of only one guide I'm booking with in the future, and it will not be some of the prominent guides with the snotty attitudes on the docks.

Thanks for the kind words Randy. Look forward to possibly taking you out next year. Yesterday got 2 Springs at Duval...lost one more and missed another. Plus some pinks...so it was by far the best fishing at Duval lately....heard of one nice Spring taken from Castle today.

Today was mainly bottomfish...good hali limits caught of some rael nice sized chickens, plus limit of lings and rockfish. Plus a Spring and a gazzilion pinks at Duval...definitely most consistent fishing is there. All in all 160lbs of fish today which isn't half bad...although not up to par for this time of the year. BIG BIG winds forecasted for tomorrow and Tues so we'll see how the fishing goes. I'll keep you posted.

Cheers,
David

See you all in Hardy this weekend will be fishing and staying on the
32' C-Leggs Friday Til Sunday!!! Stop by and say hi.

Also congrats to Christi as she caught a 50 pound chinook about a week ago. She comes to Hardy every year and most of the guides and locals know this talented angler. This is the largest fish caught on an EagleCraft so far this year. Nothing like a little bit of pressure to land the biggie this weekend. [:p]

Cheers Kevin

ps Thanks Cuba Libre, Richmake, SerengetiGuide and Cod Fathers for all the insight and openess last time I was there I had a fantastic trip caught a mix bag and learned you dont have to go far to pick up a 52 pounder as one of the old timers did on a spoon in a small boat by himself while I was there. Just haven't had much time to post as been busy delivering new boats....... However will report upon my return...... Save some fish for me.....;)

Anyone know what the price of fuel is at the dock in Port Hardy? Coming up tomorrow to fish the huge tide changes, hopefully some big fish will move in. Tight Lines,,,,,,,,,BB

Might as well keep this post alive instead of starting a new one.

Since the fishing in McNeill is still hit and miss (6 springs by myself on thursday morning, zero for the wife and I on Friday Morning)we decided to go back up the Hardy for day. What a day it was!!!!

We left the dock at 5:30, just about cut off David from Serengetti while putting up my anchor light[:p], we headed out into flat calm waters. We were back at the dock at 1:30 with a limit of springs between 16 and 23 lbs and two coho at 9lbs along with three hali's 22, 35 and 46 lbs. Along the way we saw an orca cow and calf, two humpbacks, two sealions and a bunch of porpoises. The highlight of the trip was either the 4 porpoises who played in our wake as were running (the wife loved that!!!) or me losing her halibut and just about jumping over the side with gaff in hand and gaffing it about a foot and half under water. (she really loved that one!!! or was ready to kill me if I lost it:D;))

All in all it was great day and great weather.

This boat we have is amazing. We ran 50 miles, exploring the islands and checking out a bunch of nooks and crannies and trolled for 4 hours and she did not burn 10 gallons. Cruising speed is 28 mph at 4100 rpm. Have to love those Yammies

Heading back up on Monday

Cheers

thanks for the steady reports...might only be 20+ boats there tomorrow...guy's on the dock are real happy!
remember...less sheep is better

Chad...I did as you asked and didnt put pictures in of locations etc....now no reports? Is the next step not to go out at all? it's filomi days weekend...usually one of the busiest weekends of the year for fishing...there will always be 20+ (there was today) boats at castle and duval...unavoidable. I'm not sure about you...but I'm sure it is impossible to please many other guys on the dock from my perspective...they can think/say what they want...i'm just going to go out and fish...period. I have a lot of respect for many guys on the dock including yourself as fisherman...but if it isn't returned...nothing I can do about it.

Have a good day fishing,
David

I quit worrying about "sheep", along time ago! Now days I even help them... but most don't listen anyway! Or do they know how to fish the areas! [B)]

Just my 2 cents!

THE EASIEST WAY TO AVOID THE WHOLE SHHEP THING IS TO GET YOURSELVES UP A LITTLE EARLIER, MOST THE GUIDES DONT LEAVE UNTIL 6 IF U KNOW WHERE YOUR GOING JUST LEAVE EARLIER, IF YOUR THERE FIRST, U CAN HARDLY GET HASSLED FOR SHEEPING ANYONE

Good Job Ken-- and to think I taught him everything he knows too!!!:D

No draws at all, but still enjoying that island elk from last year[:p].

Yes I learned everything from the CL!!!!!

Thanks Bryan!!!! The next trip is on me.....

But today was a different story.

Went back to the place we fished on Sat. Was not as hot, however we had a nice surprise for our first fish. It hit an anchovie at 45' and was in the boat in under 5 minutes, a fat 60" 105 lbs hali!!! It was the guys first hali and second fish ever. Not bad for trolling for springs. All in all it was an ok day, we ended up with the hali, 2 pinks and 4 coho, including a hatchery fish, lost two more and had two other good hits. The fish were far and in between today and the sheep herders (Codfathers:D) were burning up the airwaves with no fish here and no fish there reports along with a few guys who were arguing over which way they should be going through the islands in the fog[:0]. Saw about 3 fish get caught.

The only picture I took, all the rest are the other guys camera. It does not do the fish justice.

I heard of some guys running towards Rivers to see if they could get some fish. Long way to run for fish.

Cheers

Good work Ken...hope you had fun out there today. Found it wasn't as hot today as yesterday...but still managed some real nice fish! Persistance seems to pay off...just gotta stay out a bit longer than most for that high tide :D;)

PS - Saw your hali carcass in the carcass bin...you aren't lying that the pic doesn't do it justice!! Good job bud.

Spent all of last week fishing Port Hardy. Finally had some calm waters to fish up there, too bad the fishing was so slow. In the 4 1/2 days we spent fishing only really had 3 hours of action. Fished one evening at a local hot spot and was the only boat there. Ended up with three Chinook (11, 28 and 41). Other than that, except for some occassional pinks and undersized Chinook (one 7 pound Coho) it was pretty dismal. Even spent the better part of the day at Pine and could only scratch up one medium sized Ling for our efforts. Oh well, better luck next year.

(People keep saying the runs are late. Are they so late we're still waiting for last years?)

Normally I'm up for a little Yank bashin (when they deserve it). However, I don't think it was the Americans that built the hydro dams on the Campbell River water system. I think we better have a good look in the mirror regarding the state of fishing around Campbell river.
