Geez guys, have a little more coffee. I was just giving a report not bashing the country or the fishing. I take one week a year for a fishing trip to Vancouver Island because why...Yes, the fishing is better and I enjoy getting away for some R&R. I never keep more than a few that I'll use during the year.
So here's a new report to keep everybody happy. The fishing was great, couldn't keep them off the hook. We released everything we caught to help preserve the runs and even transported some live breeding stock from our home waters to add to them. See ya next year.
(By the way, I thought the whole reason the Canadian Fisheries put restrictions on commercial fishing was to promote sports fishing and protect the tourism dollars coming into the country).
sory just venting a little had a bad day around some tourists that had no business being on the water knowing as little as they did , caused for a bad day for a few boats
as for our gov tourism seem to be the direction they are going, some agree some dont,
the order that was negotiated between the user groups and dfo is
1 conservation 2 native food fish 3 commercial 4 recreational
that order seems to rotate as too who has the better lobbiest and makes the most noise.
it seems to be followed for sockeye , because the stocks are low now and they can just close the whole fishery !!!
but the spring fishery seems to be going towards the recreational side, the commercial trollers have really been screwed on this one.
they geat a few months in spring and are very limited on thier catch.
if u were ever here in the 70 80 and early 90s u would have seen that the commercial fishery was by far more valuable to the small towns along the coast than tourism, with thousands of boats in hardy bay, all needing repairs , fuel , grub , offloading etc. the commercial fishing but hundreds of kids thru colledge and university with good paying summer jobs either on the docks, or deckhanding. that isint happening now . the tourists are a nice boost for the towns in the summer but it doesnt help to make our towns, tourism doesnt bring young families to live here, and be part of the community..
if u get a chance drop by the musiem in hardy they have a display on the history of fishing there , its really interesting, and shows the importance commercial fishing was .
