Nootka Report

Just got back today for Critter Cove. The place is hot right now. Twenty lb. fish seemed to be the norm and plenty in the 30-40 range. We lost as many big fish as we caught. Some just didn't stick. Maybe there we was a 40 in there somewhere. Anyway, it was very productive, weather was great. We didn't get outside the 3 nights we were there. Spent all our time inside normally at Camel, San Carlos or Argonaut. Managed a 23,22,20 a few in the teens. Still getting a sense for the area so hope to improve results next year. Folks at CC are great as usual. Holmes, the ribs were super, pork chops great. Looking forward to paella next year. Pass along my thanks to Crissy and Candice. Also, no issue with the fire in Gold River as of late yesterday. It's high on the hill and been actively fought by air. Sure did grow though over the time we saw it start.

Just got back from critter cove, got there sat afternoon, and returned monday afternoon. Holmes ribs were awesome, we fished the inside, mostly the wall, camel, and the stretch by critter cove. We came back with 8 springs and 2 coho, the springs were between 21-28.5 lbs, released several fish in the teens. The boats going to bajo did really well, but the wind was blowing all weekend.

Anyone else worried about this weekend and the forest fire in Gold River.

This fire is highly visible from Gold River.
Firefighters will be working today to minimize smoke in Gold River and establish a sprinkler line for hydro line protection. The fire is within 700 metres of the hydro line.
The fire is within a kilometre of Highway 28. Highway 28 and the road to Woss are open.

This really stinks. The fire has grown from 9ha yesterday to 50ha today.

Hey All

I hear the fire is within 1km from highway 28. It also states the fire has grown to 100 hectares. Has anyone heard if the road is closed? I am hoping everyone can get out and in, fishing has been so good, be a shame if not able to get there.

I notice this evening that the fire has spread to 169.0 ha. This is not good for the hydro lines which are now only 500 metres away.

Fishing has been very good in Nootka Sound over the last couple of weeks. I've been at Critter Cove and they have given out a few red hats. That is for a salmon that is over 40 pounds. Last year 2008 and the year before that 2007, there was not one fish over 40 pounds weighed in at Critter. This year they are up to 20 springs over 40 pounds, so lots of Red hats handed out by Cameron.

Fishing has been very good outside on the Bajo Reef and the Red can #56. I've spent most of my time out on the Highway where you can spend all day and not see another boat. The bait balls are massive with lots of pilchards, so they have a new spoon called the Kelly Pilchard six inch at Critter that is doing well. I’ve caught dozens of big springs of it along with the guides from Nootka Wilderness Lodge. The 639 and 530 glow 5 inch Tubby has been the best producing plugs for me. The key to trolling these lures is the speed,

The fish are stacked up inside as well with many of the over 40 pounders taken around Camel Rk, Three Bay, the Wall and Hisnet. Fishing offshore at Esperanza has been very good with some 30 spring days (catch/release).

As time goes on the fish will move inside in big numbers and fishing will get even better.

nice report and pictures codfather, I remember that halibut, It was sitting in a cooler with the head out one end and the tail out the other last sat night, everyone that walked by the cooler, had to take a look. I will be back there again next week, can't wait we did well there last week.

Is there anyone heading to Critter Cove Sunday Aug 9 sometime in the afternoon??? I left my boat at Critter and need to get back out.

Got back from Moutcha Bay last night last night. No problems with the highway/fire yet. Caught lots, lost some, released lots. Kind of a neat feeling to tail a 25lber, flip the hook out, and set him loose. Caught fish on anchovies, 602 Tomic spoon 5+6", 4" watermelon coyote, and many on a boring white hootchie. Saw people playing fish behind all colours of flashers, but green and purple seemed to be most prominent. 40-60 feet down. Troll a shoreline until you get a hit and then work that spot until it dries up. Burdwood has cleaner fish and more of a westcoast feel for those of us with smaller boats that can't get outside. Only fished there on the last day- less traffic, more action, and more cohoes if you are into those.

Saw the big red aluminum charter boat up close. "Every fisherman's biggest wet dream" was how one guy described her. I'm thinking about ordering a sister ship, selling my house to pay for it, and buying my wife a nice new coleman stove to use in our new home- the tent.
