New Halibut Regs. Letter to the Editor

Until we kibosh the quota system or the biomass goes up we are stuck with restrictions...u know that. If the biomass were to drop dramatically and we allotted only 500,000 pounds instead of the million we have now...maybe you would be right. Tough decisions would have to be made and those making them would be forced into a no win situation. As you are obviously very upset with the direction taken you should sign yourself up and get on your local committee and cast your vote where it counts. Those decisions will never be influenced from here (DFO or SFAB) As it was explained to us by someone who asked....this is regarded by the powers as purely entertainment.

I doubt the biomass will improve until the Alaskan by catch gets curtailed

With more boats hali fishing than ever, I am OK with some restrictions to keep the stocks healthy and give us a good chance at getting fish on most outings.
With 1 fish per day, 2 fish posession and an annual limit of 6 we have already made drastic cutbacks to the way it was just a few years ago with 2 fish per day and 3 posession. Annual limit should curbed those overfishing and guides gifting.

I am NOT OK with size restrictions that have been put in place, 85/15 split of allocation or the experimental quota transfer system. *Imagine a system where you can basically pay to poach fish outside of all regulations. Any size/ any time/ any where! As long as you pay the piper. WTF!

With the cutbacks made above and strong recommendations and to release large hali over 100lb, any other cut backs should be made from the commercial 85%.

The whole program needs to be scrapped and redrawn with commercial quota only being given to those that fish (not to be sold or leased), full season for sports fisherman March 1- Oct. 31 (announced well in advance of season) , catch limit of 1 per day/ 2 posession any size, annual limit of 6-10 (not sure what the number shoud be)

In my opinion.

I Agree with your position 100%. It just makes too much sense and it may have resulted with an early closure which the powers that be thought was more important to prevent. So we live with what we got at least for this year.
