how do i summarize 3.5 months of living and moving a yacht hundreds of nautical miles across oceans in a few words ?
welp. that was interesting.
taking delivery and stress due to hold ups at transport canada. drying ports. 40 foot tides. 25 foot waves and not caring because you have been through worse. 52 knot winds. watching a captain literally die and the futility of coast guard rescue attempts. distress rocket flares at 3am. helicopters on AIS. ghost ships. chinese spy operations. nato warships and tugs. coast guard interception attempts and stealth. ladders and ramps. sleeping at 30 degree angles. grounding on rocks. cardinal buoys and how i hate them. the uselessness of magnetic compasses. drying out 30 feet above rocks and near death experiences. gravity and balance on large objects. the force of tidal waters. whirlpools and crosscurrents. military divers and walking through swamp. rescueing the british army. starlink and its limits in the ocean. sideways rain and hail in warm weather. lightning tearing up the sky. epic sunsets. fuses blowing with 100's of amps. double fused circuits and how i love them. the magic of ropes. sails are heavy. lowlight cameras are amazing. FLIR and its uselessness. radar guard zones and connections. burning $6000/day for a month. running with superyachts. NMEA 2K and how i love you. autopilots and limits when hydraulic lines cant take it anymore. tools and rust. when stainless steel corrodes. harbours and fishing lines. folding props and how mini keels are awesome. i could write a book.
holy crap that was a steep learning curve. would i have done it again ? probably yes. but not if i was any older.
if youre going to buy a boat to cross oceans, do it before youre 50 or dont do it. older people likely would not be a able to handle it. i lost 20 lbs on this trip. but wow. 7600+nm on a powerboat is nothing compared to a full blown ocean yacht moving across oceans. also i definitely need more tech on the boat. wireless throttle and shift. better camera connectivity. hardwired starlink. remote RPM measurement. more fenders.
most of the stuff i had on board worked. some didnt. some was disappointing. some was awesome. mixed bag but expected. will do it for next year when i take it across the atlantic solo. also lifepo4 is amazing but i already knew that.
