Maintain Priority Access to Chinook and Coho for the Canadian Public in a New Salmon Allocation Policy. Send Your Letter to DFO!

Why doesn’t DFO have a look at the “Five Nations” TAC of Chinook and reduce their’s first? They intercept these same fish before they get to Area23 and 123!

In addition to that: They now start on April 1st with the quota sucked up from Area G Troll.

The latter can't hit the water until August after the majority of returning springs have already wandered by.

Isn't upper Fraser river FN's fish issues more to do with lower Fraser River FN's now they have ownership of most of the fish?

How are these issues ever going to be resolved an who will pay all the lawyers? And what court would have jurisdiction if the provisions of these new laws of ownership are invoked?

Had the privilege of testifying at fisheries committee Monday in Ottawa. Afterwards Ernie Klassen, Liberal MP for white rock Surrey and also parliamentary secretary to the fisheries minister approached me to chat quickly and assured me small charter businesses will not be hurt by any upcoming decisions. What that means, who knows.
Also happened to run into Gord Johns when heading to Aaron Gunn’s office and had a few min discussion with him on it. Got his attention by saying I’m from the island then he chatted with me and He said don’t worry public sector willl be fine and I said it won’t if we lose priority access on Chinook and coho. And he said I’m fairly certain from my conversations with the minister that won’t happen. He’s not in government so who knows but what he said.

Will believe it when I see it.

Mike Kelly and Owen bird and Jesse Zeman testified last week and did better than me lol. Also testified Monday with Ivan Chu and Warren Barker. Also Mike Griswold who resigned from Fraser Panel over FN having vetoes over sockeye openings last year. His testimony was good for the non conservative members to hear.

Also heard from well connected on fisheries file MP’s parliamentary assistant that skrw restrictions will be status quo. Good news (shouldn’t be any and should be bubble zone only but still). This one I believe due to who it was and how it was said. Still. We will see but hopeful for the southern island that’s the case.

Still very skeptical of what Ernie Klassen and Gord Johns said though. But better than them saying the opposite.

A huge thank-you to all who are working their butts off on these issues.

Has there been any update from DFO on the area 23 issue that I raised a stink about earlier?

No and you won't until the salmon IFMP comes out I believe also hearing nothing is not a bad thing. Have you reached out to the local SFAC or Area 23 yet ? The minutes from the Conference board just came out and you can see the discussion the was had with DFO regarding the S52 chinooks.

Why not just send them 500 fish from a stock that’s not at risk and be done with it. Also they could just give them like 10 thousand more sockeye instead and not make a dent in the forecasted sockeye return.

Here’s the real reason, is they need to pass 52s to have a commercial FN sockeye fishery. The summer sockeye run is forecasted to be the bigger run portion, not lates as they were overfish 4 years ago.

The summer run sockeye have similar timing to the 5-2s that if I recall are all past the month of the Fraser by the third week of August.

So if you want to have an in river Gilnet fishery say August 15th for summer run sockeye and not over exploit the chinook need to get more chinook to the river.

Other wise you’re looking at not opening sockeye till September.

But all rational thinking has left building.
Why not gillnets only on odd days let 50% of everything returning make it past the gillnets?

Yes this is correct - the Salmon IFMP process has not fully completed. The IFMP still needs to be completed/finalized by DFO Pacific Regional and their recommendations on new amendments need to be reviewed by the National Head Quarters DFO Sr team. Then ultimately after discussion and amendments the Minister will approve a final IFMP prior to when it comes into effect - June 1 each season. The IFMP then sets out how DFO will manage fisheries for the next calendar year (June 1 to May 31). A lot of folks confuse the IFMP timeline with a regular Jan - Dec calendar year.

Regarding the issues raised by the Area 23/123 SFAC letter and input to the IFMP.....As many here are aware, one of the biggest challenges facing the South Coast Chinook fishery has been lower abundance of Fraser 5-2 Chinook - resulting in the implementation of a number of wide ranging recreational, commercial and FN's fishing management measures. Layered on top of that is GoC and DFO staff trying to navigate the legal and political landscape associated with reconciliation obligations....countless landmines to navigate. I would suggest that the recreational fishery was exceptionally represented by the SFAB team tasked with the monumental 5 year commitment to advance the interests of the recreational fishery within the Salmon Allocation Policy Review process. The Area 23/123 issues represent how we are now starting to see some of the early effects of those negotiations starting to influence how DFO staff are trying to adapt to what they anticipate might be the final outcome of the SAP process. This is an early harbinger of what is possibly to come - hoping not.
