Levelwind vs Centerpin

For salmon single action all the way, more fun. The only boats I seem to ever see trolling with levelwinds in BC are US boats.
Now that is stereotyping!! You must not have seen my boat or my many other friends from the US. I started out with Shimano moochers and have since upgraded to 3 Islander MR2's. I wouldn't use anything else....

Well Technically, you having centerpin rods doesn't contradict his statement at all, he was saying that some of them use levelwinds, and none of bc fishers, so if you want to disprove him, you'd have to find a Canadian West coaster, with a levelwind reel...

Reel? That's too easy. I just use a fat wooden dowel with a few 100 yds of line wrapped around it. There's nothing like the joy of managing a fish by using only your palms for drag and bringing in a fish by rolling the stick between your hands. My setup is super low maintenance and very inexpensive but I have to admit I'm thinking about getting rid of the extra complication of the stick.

Stick? when we were kids we would have killed for a stick. We used to wrap the line around our waists and run it through our teeth for drag.........

and we were damn lucky to have it

Line? when we were kids we would have killed for line. We used to jump in the water, dive down to 180 feet and capture the fish with our teeth...... and we were damn lucky to have it.

Teeth? when we were kids we would have killed to .............................

Ah to Hell with it.

And now there's My generation,

A boat, 50HP 4 stroke, 3 electric scotties, Shimano Rods&Reels...

I know what you're thinking: Spoiled little brat...
But I worked for everything, and every penny spent was earned by me!

Just out of curiosity Barrie,
How to guests react when they see you pull out your levelwinds? I am thinking more the experienced ones.. If I were to walk on a guide boat in BC I would be pretty freaked out and let down if I saw a bunch of levelwinds if going on a salmon charter. Or are you chartering Hali?

i run level wind reels. Switched over after a finger incident with a charter client 20 years ago and ive never gone back. IMO, Fish are in quicker and are less fatigued after the hook up. Might not be as exciting as the "knuckle-buster" but it is what it is.

I bought an old unused Penn Jigmaster 500 today from an online ad. It's a conventional reel without a levelwind, so you need to spool with your thumb. Can't see using it for salmon, though many do down south.

Mooching reels all the way. Doesn't matter if they are experienced or a newbie,, they learn fast. I have brought many a newbie out to the coast with me young and old, female and male and they have all done well.

And PS, there is no such thing as being less fatigued from a rod or reel. When a fish is ready for the boat they are ready doesn't matter how you got them ready.

For salmon I only fish centerpin, unless I'm taking my kids fishing. For running spreader bars for halis I prefer old Petez centerpins, but for jigging I only use levelwinds. Also when trolling the bottom for bottom fish I also run levelwinds as I can't imagine pulling in up to 500 feet of line + 2lb ball.

I haven't chartered for about 10 years, but 80% of my clients were American, level wind was the reel of choice for them. Had knuckle busters for Canadians, must say though some Canadians appreciated the level wind. Level winds certainly don't work well for younger kids. I myself use a medium size Avet level wind for salmon (large size for Hali) works for me and at this point in time, it's more about the day than worrying about catching. However, my son is a knuckle buster user and can't see any merit in my level winds. Great thing about posts, there is a bug for every bird!

Well, as an infrequent ocean angler i mostly use my levelwind. I do have an old Diawa mooching reel/rod and an even older Peetz rod and reel rigged up, but have yet to catch anything on either one. Mostly due to lack of use I guess.

Clint,
I know you don't, but Just a word of caution on the peetz reel, don't use any monofilament line, the centre hubs warp bad. They were designed for thin wire line. Learned that lesson when I was starting out years ago. I had all mine refurbished and retired them. When I was a kid, my dad and his cronies applied a big plexiglass donut ring on the face for salmon fishing, their idea of easier winding, no downriggers in those days. It was deadly on the fingers.

Thanks for that. I read a book about Peetz reels when I first got it. It told me the same thing. I spooled it up with braid, incase I ever get the big one on it. Have played around with it in the lake, but no lunkers. Yet

Clint,
Good call, we use to use them for Hali until we went all uptown and bought MULTIPLE types of level winds thinking that's the way to fish hali. Should have stayed with the peetz and I'd would have saved a really BIG chunk of change over the years. But I'm a slow learner.
