Well I'm new to the forum here and have been reading through a lot of the old posts trying to do some homework before I go fishing this weekend with some buddies.

One of the guys, father in-law just got a boat and is lending it to us for the weekend. We were looking to do some prawning and salmon fishing. We are all total rookies to fishing, and so I wanted to see if you guys had any pointers for us. The boat we are out on is 20ft with 2 down riggers. We are probably going to camp out on Valdez Island for the night, so you can get an idea where we are going to be.

Any and all suggestions appreciated!
Cheers
Jon

If you going to be camping at Valdez, then Polier pass is where I would concentrate my time. There is also a decent spot on the East side of Galiano South of Polier pass. Just look for the other floats. There is also good prawning and decent salmon fishing near tent island.

Hope this helps out

Thanks for the info DieHard, much appreciated, this gives us a place to start out.

Any suggestions on bait/lures? Like I said, we are total rookies.

I have also heard that while the commercial prawning is on, that they will steal your traps if you leave them out, is there any truth to this, and if so is it only in certain area's?

Cheers

Porlier Pass is chuck full of seals , I cab tell you right now you will not get fish there past those guys , friend of mine Paul Friis was there today and gave up after 1 hr. fishing , his boat was followed by 8 to 10 seals from the time he arrived.

Hi Al,

Thanks for that info. Any suggestions on where else might be good?

Cheers
Jon

Go on the outside , weather permitting and down the East side of Galiano Island you will come across a point close in to the Island with a single tree standing on it (referred to by us locals as Lone Tree point) , head straight from that to the 40 fathom depth and troll at 110 to 135 ft if there are springs around thats where you find them , should be some showing there about now , might be little early though.
