Kitty Coleman 2013 reports

Hey Owen-- looks more like a hake to me.. How big was it?
Never seen one before. They would have weighed about 3-4lbs each. The mouth was black inside and had some sharp looking teeth. I thought at first it was a mutant p-cod till I seen the scale pattern and mouth. There were 3 boats that I know of that were catching them.

For the second evening I am now looking at pictures on the internet.

Not going to be eating it so I will not know what it tastes like no matter what it is.

I vote not sablefish... although that would be super cool. The sablefish have two well spaced dorsals. I agree with the hake diagnosis... supposedly tonnes in the strait. On two occaisions when I worked in Campbell River a crazy event happened where hake must have been in the area when there were really big tides. They got blown to the surface in Seymour Narrows and their swim bladders inflated so the could not get back down. There were literally tens of thousands of hake on the surface, some dead, some still alive but flopping around hopelessly. They were packed in between the fingers at Browns bay marina and the eagles were so full they were just sitting in the trees staring at the slick of fish going by. The interesting thing is that on the two occaisions they were totally different sizes..... once about 8 inches and once about 18 inches... but all the fish were about the same size each time.. the strait never ceases to amaze, thanks for posting FA

it's a sablefish...some people really like them, i've never eaten one myself.

That is not a Black Cod (Sable fish). I commercial fished them for 20 yrs. Have one tattooed on my shoulder. I've eaten tons of smoked Black Cod, boiled, fried... Very rich but very good. That is a Hake.

Was at Lazo last night for a few hours. Couple of smallies to the boat, one dogfish, and one missed good strike. Didn't see any nets out in the area.

The lighthouse in Campbell river is closed for cowichan chinook so is lambert channel do they go back up north all the way around the islands and up again or across to Powell river and back again why is this closure in place anyone?

Most all the clipped heads deposited at Bates come back as cowichan fish so...
Since when...... I have been turning in all my hatchery heads for more then 10 years from the Bates/Kitty area and have never had one come back as a Cowichan fish.

What I don't understand about these so called Cowichan fish is if they are heading down the east side of Vancouver Island and apparently be caught here which is total BS why are there not closers to protect these fish closer to the Cowichian? How about Nanaimo? Close Thasher and the Fingers for retention June thru July? Do the fish not come up from the south as well? Maybe we need more then just protection of the Fraser River salmon. How about more restrictions to protect these fish in areas 17 thru 20 as well as areas 28 and 29. :) :)
