IMPORTANT NOTE FROM SFI-BC & SVIAC Re: FISHING REGS

I live on Pender Island and as you are aware my sport fishery has been DESTROYED. Not restricted, not a partial closure,a smaller bag limit, not for just Chinook but all finfish. It has been DESTROYED. I can now sit on my deck and watch the armada of whale watching boats escort every Orca that passes through, in what is now their private viewing area from the U.S border to Active Pass. I am numb, I am gutted....

Feel you pain. The Cowichan Bay fishery will be toast this year as of July 31st when the Cowichan Chinook restriction take effect, and no where else to go now that Pender is closed. That is what people don't also seem to understand. This entire restriction is not only in Sooke/Vic a lot of areas got hit at same time. Pender island is ridiculous. Basically closed off around the entire island. Sorry about your fishery.

BC will be non retention province wide in 3, 2, 1.......

The “powers that be” ie, college grads in the last 5-10 years don’t know or care about how dear we hold our fishery.

In their eyes, your right to take home a fish is null and void and since they gave you PERMISSION to float out there in the hopes of catch and release, you should be thankful.

Laugh all you want, but this is the mindset we are dealing with.

Glad to see the guides around vancouver are starting to comment on it!

" Vancouver Saltwater Salmon Fishing Report
If you haven’t heard there are new regulations coming into effect today. Go to the link, but in short, our local waters have been reduced to 1 chinook salmon per day. I will be detailing how we arrived here in future reports, or perhaps in a separate email all together, but I need some time to gather my thoughts and present our customers with the facts. The quick version is this decision by DFO is irresponsible as they had the data and means to make much better decisions but chose to make broad regulation changes that will have major economic impact. This is largely a political decision so it looks like they are doing something to save the Southern Resident Killer Whales and restore chinook populations but the reality is this broad closure will do neither as they haven’t addressed the underlying issues such as the exploding Pinnipeds (seals and sea lion) population. I have said too much already, but stay tuned for a very detailed article from me next week and it will include the facts of what is really going on and information on how you can get involved, and you will need to if you want to have access to salmon in our local waters in coming years."

Yup, I’m in the same boat. Anyone who says these closures are based on Science or the SRKW issue are full of it. Feeling like the sacrificial lamb! I sent off my first correspondence to Elizabeth May today. Adam Olson and the Fishery Minister are next. To me this is an election issue and no one who supports this will never get my vote!

Roy, I felt the same way for a few hours until Imhad a chat with Martin Paish. He reminded me that the greens original ask was that all waters from the Fraser to Barkley be closed. It was data from the creel and log books that prevented that from being seriously considered. The announcement is political and bs as it won't achieve the goals the greens say it will....that is something we need to keep fighting. I will continue with the log book.

I don't know how i can say this any way else, but Profisher you seem to be kissing a few asses, mods please delete if over the line, nuff said.

Jackle my head was clouded with rage for the better part of a day. Now I've calmed down and my head is clearing and I can think again. I hope everyone else can get there.

Parts of B.C. coast now closed to salmon fishing in effort to protect killer whales
New closures include parts of Juan De Fuca Strait, the southern Gulf Islands and the mouth of the Fraser River

Federal officials have closed parts of the West Coast to salmon fishing in an effort to protect the endangered orca population.

The new closures, effective Friday, include parts of Juan De Fuca Strait, the southern Gulf Islands and the mouth of the Fraser River.

Details vary for each area, but in many cases, recreational fin fishing is completely banned in the areas from June 1 until Sept. 30, while commercial fishing for all salmon is banned.

New daily catch limits have also been put in place for chinook salmon in other North Coast and South Coast areas, along with restrictions on trolling in some areas.

Protecting chinook protects orcas
The closures are part of a larger program unveiled last week intended to reduce the total harvest for chinook salmon by 25 to 35 per cent. Chinook are the primary food source of the endangered southern killer whale population.

"Wild populations of chinook salmon have declined dramatically in recent years. This lack of prey has been a critical factor in the decline of southern resident killer whales." said a statement on the Fisheries and Oceans Canada website.

Conservationists and wildlife biologists have been calling for the closures for several years, but sport fishing organizations have expressed concern about the closures, saying other factors play a greater role in the decline of the chinook and killer whales.

According to Owen Bird, the executive director of the Sport Fishing Institute of B.C., tanker traffic along the West Coast is one of them.

He says it's ironic Ottawa has restricted salmon fishing, while opting to purchase the Transmountain Pipeline expansion — a project that would see increased West Coast tanker traffic, should it go through.

The tanker traffic could have an adverse effect on the resident killer whale population due to shipping noise, according to marine biologists. The acoustic smog interferes with whales' "exquisitely sensitive hearing," which they use to hunt prey, navigate the ocean and communicate.

"How can you address noise from the tankers when you're proposing increasing tanker traffic by three times?" said Bird. "It seems that possibly the DFO is motivated to make an optical gesture here to say 'we're doing our bit' because we can't possibly address the other factors that are at play here," he said.

The latest estimates put the total population of southern resident killer whales at 76.

So, this article says, Salmon Fishing is closed.
Then it says we should blame the pipeline.

Something is wrong here!

If that is the Sportsfishing message then we are in deep trouble.

At what point is DFO going to be blamed and be shown to be highly incompetent?

This is a CBC media story so they control the narrative. Social media is the way to keep control of your message.

Yeah that’s over the line, bud.

Everyone is getting a little tense these days.

man I feel sorry for Owen Bird im sure they interviewed him for awhile and he probably said a bunch of great stuff about the issues facing sports fishing.

Then CBC only includes the part with him ranting about pipelines. how embarrassing

Might be, however this is now all over Canada.

You might be right, but ranting about something that has had no effect on where we are or why we are there is not doing us any good in the public’s eyes.

I guess the good news is that it was on CBC , so no one was watching. The social engineering project only resonates with the blue hairs .

If we do not start to BLAME DFO for the real reasons for the demise of the salmon and the complete lack of doing anything for YEARS, then we are lost.

We did not cause this and actually we as a group have probably done more for Salmon than any other group.

Yet no one is selling this story?

Small hatcheries, stream work, fish counts and the list goes on.

The YEARS of working and advising DFO. Telling them over and over about our concerns about salmon.
Remember these people who have worked within the SFAB are and always were volunteers.

The GREENS are not volunteers.
They also do not play fair.

We need a group that is Political and as the competition has spin doctors ready to go.

So, who is going to be the face of this group?

This will call for a political person.

They will need to raise a lot of money as well.

If you can capture 200,000 of the 350,000 fishermen out there and collect just $10.00 from each it would be a great start.

So, either this gets done real soon or there is no doubt it soon will be over.

By the way, while you are fishing this year, the other groups are meeting over MPA’s and where they will be.

So do not be surprised if they close areas to fishing. I am betting it will be just like these closures because we are a push over.
