Halibut

"My biggest worry is that my wife (when I'm dead) will sell my fishing gear for what I said I paid for it".

Make sure she has my # for that fateful day. LOL.

Never fished that area. Looking at the charts my head is spinning with the possibilities though!.

even if you knew when is a good time to fish Ucluelet that would be a big help. dont want to waste $$ staying there the wrong time of year

as for the girl selling my gear, i think she has an idea as she bought me stuff for xmas and complained of the price LOL

Everyone I know thats fishing for them are having great catches right now. North island, south island. Don't see any reason why not mid west island. Seems like a real good season thus far. Just plan around the tides and pick your dates.

Someone else may have more exact info, but I say....GO GET'M

Why Ucluelet?. Live nearby or just looking for something different?.

I would start out using Salmon belly's from last years catches. If you don't have any you could give it a go w/ Octopus parts, they hold the hook allot better than Herring.

There should be Pacific/Grey Cod moving through the area (?). If you should stumble along any, carve one up and use the head, belly or the whole damb carcass. 'Match the hatch' sort of speech.

Just a personal note;
Anything fifty and over is most likely a female. One in the triple digits is. If I should happen onto one of these, I put away the gear for the rest of the season regardless of where I'm at on 'limits'. Thats a HUGE pile of fish for the freezer!. :)

Don't forget to fry-up the rest of Mr. Grey for dinner!.

Thanks for the info Mr. Dean....

I just wish we could get more on the inside waters. Seems like there is a lot of bottom out there that could be used!!

Back in the early 90's I did catch a baby, strait out from the river mouth (Fraser), 16" long. Was drag'n the bottom 'shark' fish'n for my then young nephew.

I will give all of these tips a try, I have three days so I better get some thing. Appreciate all the info, I will try to have all the guys use something different so we have a better chance to see what is working.

I heard once that someone caught a Halibut off Departure Bay or Brick Yard area, would almost have to see it to believe it.

Is black cod any good? Never had it

Bigchrome

Give a man a fish, and he can eat for a day. But teach a man how to fish, and he'll be dead of mercury poisoning inside of three years.

A 67 pounder was caught at the marina a fish at in nanoose. I dont really wanna post where it was caught because i bet a few are left and i think they should be left alone.

"Yeah, it's ok. Typical fish n chip fare. Ya know?."

What blackcod are you referring too? It is definitely not typical fish and chip fare!

Here's a piece from the DFO site that sums up sablefish pretty well:

"Sablefish is a distinctive species combining dark, almost furry skin with pearly white flesh. Sablefish also boasts a smooth, luxurious texture and rich, velvety taste, the results of its high oil content. Mild, sweet flavour and a delicate white flake give sablefish a unique mouth and plate appeal much sought after by discriminating chefs and consumers."

OOP'S SORRY;

Any representations in the above post of mine regarding Black Cod should be taken on the understanding that I meant to make reference to the Pacific Cod. Also known as the True Cod or Grey cod.

Hope I didn't upset any Sablefish out there.

Honest. I'm not a racist. Color blind?. Yes.

I actually have a number of Sablefish that are very good friends of mine. Would you like to meet them?.

Speaking of wich;

I can't get over how fantastic of a job those little buggars do stripping a cut-plug down leaving only the bones on the hooks!. NEVER had one for dinner. Used them for bait as well though. Lings luv'm.

Others just puke!.

Bad trips can come from anywhere. It's all about timing and presentation.

Hard to believe...My best salmon of all time came from under the 1st Narrows Bridge, Stanley Park side, 2 years ago.

Not sure of this, Mr. Big...But you might want to think of a local charter for Hali's before shelling out the dough for a QCI trip. There are quite a few good guys on this forum who would love to take ya out and 'teach the talk'. EVERYONE has been haul'n em in for the last 2 months now.

Think of it this way. 500 bucks or so is not a bad tuition. If you come back with 50 lbs of fish, the trip has paid for itself in meat on the table alone (chances are good), not to mention the great info you will take with you for future 'hunts'. I was forced to buy fresh stuff mid April @ $15/lb!!.

I have known people who have spent $500.00 year after year on gear alone and still end up in the same 'boat'. Not to mention the fuel bills generated trying to find 'the spots'...Only to learn three years later that they have been fishing on them all along but on the wrong sides of em all this time.

I myself don't do Hali charters. Isn't feasible from where I live, but If you are ever in my neighborhood, I'd likely find good pleasure wag'n the chin w/ ya. :)

Don't get me wrong, Sir. I am by no means trying to imply that you couldn't catch your own a** with a # 10 siwash, tandem rigged...I just feel that I have been where you are at. But I'm afraid that If you come back empty handed from this trip you might feel that there is no hope AND there isn't any fish out there AND that you'll need to spend yet more $$$ on BIGGER trips to achieve your goals.

With that said. I didn't have a Dad or an Uncle that could teach me how to fish or hunt for that matter. I received my diploma from The School of Trial n Error (started classes at age 11). To proud to pay a pro, but that was ok. I was just glad to be out on the water each and every time. Made some good friends along the way. Still have room for improvement though (always). But I also realize that if results were important to me back then, then a guide would have been the cheaper way to go. MUCH CHEAPER.

Fishing and Hunting go hand in hand. It's not about the prize at the end. It's the journey that got us there and if we should happen to be rewarded for our efforts, the better the journey was. No such thing as a 'good' or 'bad' trip. they're all GREAT!!...That's how I look at it.

Anyways, glad to see that you ARE sharing with friends and I truly do hope you come home with dinner!!.

BTW. Have you tried the search engine on this forum?. Tons of useful stuff. Some for that area as well.
