Halibut

Good Day: Mr. Dean

I hate to say with great regret that I did not hook any Halibut , all the on line research and reading did not help this time. The first day was a perfect day, **** on a plate out there, no one on the boat hooked a Halibut. I tried Squid, herring, Mudraker, Octopus, Jigs. You named it I tried it. Second day was slow for the salmon charter, very slow. <img src=icon_smile_angry.gif border=0 align=middle> one good thing I can say about my charter, is that I met a guide in a local pub from another charter that guaranteed he will limit out my group for Halibut. Guaranteed! It looks like I am going to book with him for the end of June. I only went to learn where the Halibut are and how to fish them, for when the new boat comes next year. I can catch Springs, Coho’s, Steelhead, Sockeye, and Lingcod, but Halibut is new to me.
If anyone wishes to book a charter for Halibut, I would recommend staying away from the OBMG out of Ucluelet. I learned that there boat Captains are not actually guides, they just have a license to run large boats. I actually knew the deck hand on the boat and after small conversation I will not likely book with OBMG in the future. ( A good lesson in not to believe everything you read on there web site)
Mr. Dean I will let you know how my trip goes in the end of June.

What about Halibut around Langara Island. Where should I try. I hear off of Cohoe Pt. and the lighthouse are good producers where exactly. I am heading up June 19-23 and am looking to bring a few mid size back. 25-50 pounds.. nothing over 100.

Hey guys, inresponse to the original question of are there halis on the EC, yes there are. i was out with a buddy who grew up in an area (srry not allowed 2 say where :p) and he was telling me of a place/showed me, where you can catch halis, and ppl have pulled 200lb fish out of this hole. its near nanaimo..and thats all i can say i guess for now.

To fish or not to fish,
What a stupid question!
Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day, teach a man to fish, and he will sit on a boat drinking beer for a life time :D

Good to hear that there are some left on the inside. I hope there are some of those large females left. Maybe there's hope that Halibut Bank will once again be home to some halibut.

I know they catch them in the San Juans, so maybe they're making their way in from the South and from the North. I wouldn't think they'd get any pressure out in the middle of the strait since not many people think there are any.

Are there any up in Desolation Sound and around Campbell River/Powell River?

I was fishing Polier Pass yesterday and noticed huge school of herring. If baits are here, the buts will come back. Many springs were caught around Gabriola Reefs too.

Just looked at the Sunshine Coast fishing report and they caught a 50lb 'but up at Davis Bay (Sechelt).
