halibut on anchor chum

If you drop the chum with the downrigger, how much do you use for 3 or 4 hour soak? Is it in a bag or tube? Is it on the bottom? I have anchored 3 times and made a large 2"x2'pvc tube with holes in it and hooked it to my downrigger. The blow back was too much. I put lead in it and it was too heavy. I hooked a bait cage like the ones in a crab trap but the chum blew out too fast. I also wounder about a big halibut grabbing the chum bag and reaking hell with the downrigger.

Thanks

Who needs chum when you have a good.......

Isn't that one for the lower end of the slot size, I'm sure you would need the larger one.

Its rated 50lbs and under?......

There are better ones... But who wants a 200?

what is this chum stuff , i always fish with friends....

If you attach to the downrigger do you let it sit on the bottom or a few feet above?

bouncy then up a few feet..i reach over and shake it up.. bring up ten feet. pull the brake. bounce.. i chum with what i am baiting with.

why bother??
seems like a hassle and if you get a hali on and he wraps around your rigger and you lose it, that would PO me ..... cause it will happen...

It's not a chum bag, it's a prawn trap with lots of bait attached to your anchor. Win-win.

I emailed the DFO to ask if a chum bag is legal. See attached email response. Read from bottom to top.

Subject: Using chum bag for Halibut

I went to a Halibut Seminar in Victoria last year to learn how to anchor to fish for Halibut. There was some conversation about attaching a small bag with ground up fish scraps to the anchor line with no hooks attached. The scent might bring in Halibut from a greater distance to be caught with rod and reel out of the back of the boat. Is this chum bag allowed?

Is tossing loose chum into the water like they do on wicked tuna illegal?

I don't think so but unless you are actually fishing tuna, why would you do it unless you love eating dogfish and perhaps enjoy attracting seals?

there was a very good guide up north that used to throw salmon heads off the bow of the boat when he dropped anchor to attract fish, tough to know where they would settle on bottom though.
