halibut gaffs

I am totally new to hali fishing and wonder what kind of gaff to use? Will a 30 inch gaff work for most halibut, or is that too small?
Thanks for the info.

It should work for smaller ones, if they warrent it, I hit em with my harpoon!

My brother-in law made a special gaff with a barb and a rope on the end attached to a bouy. for those jsut in case ones that pull it free from your grasp.

Harpoon works best tho[8D]

A gaff will work well for smaller fish, but for anything over about 25 pounds, I like to use a harpoon.

You can buy a good harpoon for about $100 in most tackle stores. A bit over priced in my opinion, but then I'm too lazy to try and make my own.

The best one has a brass arrowhead that you can sharpen like a razor. I don't really like the Peetz (or is it Penn) harpoon. That one has a bullet type tip and will not cut through flesh and bone. I have also had them penetrate and then pull back through without coming off the end of the harpoon, leaving a very PO'd Halibut thrashing beside the boat as it makes a run back to the bottom.

The arrowhead is offset in a way that ensures it will come off the tip when pulled back through the Halibut.

This one is stainless steel, but the same thing is made in bronze.

I fully agree with Sushihunter and have yet to have one fail.... about the only difference is we only use the harpoon if the hali is over 50/60 lbs. We have found that pretty much anything under that can be handled with a gaff if there is another person on board to bonk and slice.... by yourself it could be challenging....:D:D SS

PS Jim, glad to hear no one was injured during your recent mishap!
PSS You might want to invest in a fish tailer as well, comes in handy for halis.

[?][?][?] What about those gaffs, which I think are called flying gaffs. They have the hook/business end that slides into a 3' gaff rod and is also attached to a rope, so upon gaffing a fish, the hook comes off the gaff rod and the fish has a large gaff hook in it with 20' line attached.

Do these units work with bigger fish, or only as demonstrated by the fishing tackle store employee?

Thanks!

I also have a big shark hook that I have used once on the 90 pounder we got last week. It has a loop at the end of the rope to attach to a cleat, but it could also be used to make a loop for grabbing the tail.

I like to harpoon the smaller ones because I once lost a 25 pounder when it kicked on the way over the rail and came off the gaff. Besides, I like that final run to the end of the rope after you stick them! :D

I have used the flying gaff for years and have only lost butts when the line has been frayed or really old(my fault)Just remember to hook the loop on the cleat before setting the hook:D.

This is my first post on the board although I have lurked for awhile.
I primarly fish out of Tahsis.

Zane, welcome and nice to see you joining the group.
Cuba Libra, you have a really good harpoon that has a head that goes through butts like butter.

Ya-- buddy Wayne in Coquitlam makes probably the best I have ever used. It was what we used to subdue the 254lber. Unlike the smaller swordfish harpoon that Sushihunter uses, it would be near impossible for the "Wayne-Poon" to pull out. I had a Atlantic swordfish harpoon and I sold it at auction in Campbell River for $35... after I initially paid $110.

Now-- the problem-- getting hold of the Wayne-poon is VERY difficult!! as he only produces a few a year. Sitka Spruce has one waiting for pick-up at my place as he became a beliver when he saw how well they worked when we chased butts at Hardy this summer :D

Thanks for the welcome Old Black Dog. I wouldn't want to say any thing, but maybe that harpoon of cubre libre works so well because of the heft behind the thrust[:p][:p] But i wouldn't want to say anything;)

Hey Zane, our boat is the whaler that moored in front of yours last summer, where Joe's (Whiplash) is now. Welcome!

I think that's yours right behind us there:
