Halibut - Coastwide Closure

vote for annual limit here as well - even as low as 6-8 - I can't imagine anyone needing more than that to feed their own family (especially Sooke fishing & 30lb+), and while giving it away to friends and family is 'nice', I'd prefer that was done away with well before a 1 a day limit for us folk that fish them once or twice a year.

That probably won't happen though because they'd be too lazy to re-create the fishing licenses to include the halibut count - too bad though because this is the best way to keep the guides in business and still keeping stocks up overall.

I totally agree with Deewar25........ and to go one step furhther, how many Chinook can one eat in a year..... SS

Don't rush too much to give up your allowable catch boys...
Once it's gone, you'll never get it back ![V]

Seems to me it's the lessor of two evils and is only considered as an alternative if myescapes rumor of 1/day turns out to be true. For me personally, I would never care if they set it at 6 or 8 and then never screwed with it again (or even 10 just to balance out the banks chickens vs the bigger south island girls)...as I said, that is enough to feed a family for a year (unless they eat it every day!) Same with springs for that matter - cut it in 1/2 to 15 or maybe 20 as far as I'm concerned (although only with comparable drops in all sectors) - I only caught 7 springs this year, no bigger than 20lbs, eat salmon most weekends, and still have 3 months worth in the freezer (family of 4 often feeding guests)...seems 15 would be more than enough!

I have no problem with 10 halibut per year recorded on your licence,
However, we are only allowed 20 springs in area 19 and i would not want to see this reduced.
that's not even 2 fish per month averaged over a year.

Let's not forget that the commercial dogfish fisherman somehow recieved a bonus of halibut by catch in the past 2 years....
I can't believe that with all the by-catch the commercial fleet goes through, somehow we get screwed.
I over heard a dragger captain last year telling another guy over the phone that he had a bag so big/full of halibut...he had to dump the whole thing.
It all seems to be to much...

Ahh, fair enough - always paid attention to my license - showed 30 spots, but I see looking online that is allowed in certain areas only....yeah, that I didn't know, but I've never even been close, so never paid attention! Lets stick with the halibut here ;)

Let's say the yearly limit becomes 10.
If I catch 3 butts and my partner catches his 10,I think he should be able to take 7 more so the 20:2 ratio equals out for annual catch total.
This way seems like a good idea to get accurate totals for D.F.O.

Well if we all thought like that there would be no fish to catch. For example your saying well i have only caught my 3 fish, ill let my buddy take my other 7, that doesnt work like that. If it was, many people would just go well i guess ill take my share, my grandfathers, my uncles, my moms, my brothers and so forth. so nice try. it will never end up being like that.

"A bad day of fishing is better than a good day of work"

Ya your right.I never thought of it that way.
Someone could buy a licence for all 5 family members and then go take 50.
So much for that reasoning.lol

Not a relative,it's me in the flesh.
Used the feminine form because, well, don't any of you know what a 'partner' is? I refer to him in past posts. Get over it guys,it IS 2008 not 1955!
Anyways....I'm on best behavior from now on.
Fishing is too important a part of my life to blow the chance of learning tips and methods from this forum. NOW...enough of me,back to the thread.

I'm so confused.

.... I really don't care if it's Mr or Mrs. In this case though, are we speaking to the same person as we were before????

Just curious.

Thanks

Nope,sorry to disapoint you,it isn't.
Ya,highlights,same Elk Laker.

We are restricted to 4 crab per day,4 trout from lakes that are STOCKED,and also limited on prawns and shrimp so why would limiting Halibut any different? I know the daily possession includes a couple more, not sure of the amount, but even factoring the total per day I don't worry at all about taking only 4 lbs. of crab home.
I think some are jumping the gun on this anyways.

I am with Cuba on his point about guides keeping a limit and passing on to clients, this happens and is not talked about much in the industry. Thanks Cuba for bringing this valid point up.

Yup- we could start by putting an annual limit on rec fishermen. And it would help if guides were not allowed to pass on "thier" daily catch to clients. Others I know have ideas too-- lets hear them.

What do you mean by 'their' daily catch?
