Fishing Reports With Specific Location Details

Just moving this topic over here from the the Vancouver Reports Thread if anyone cares to offer their opinion on the topic. The topic seemed to take off a bit there and was really a derail of the reports thread. That was likely started due to my post so the reason I have taken it here -

I was vague about giving out an exact/specific spot in a particular report. After some questions asking me to indulge specific location I gave my reasons why in some cases I won't provide exact locations and it sparked a somewhat interesting conversation ....bit surprised there was that much push back and even one post that seemed to be someone who is easily offended that anyone would withhold any specific detail.

Anyway anyone with opinion on giving out report details ( and why/why not) go at it here - Are you occasionally vague with specific spots on a public forum, do you avoid reporting publicly completely or do you hand out all specifics which may include coordinates on a public forum ??

Years ago the Vancouver Sun ran articles on fishing in the local area
written by Lee Straight, then followed by Ted Peck. Both fishers gave
good reports on where the fishing was good.

Now go ahead to today, still reports in the paper, but now we have the WWW .
More up to date, not just weekly, but hourly, or is some cases, on the spot,
complete with coloured pictures.

I believe this is a good thing. Keep up the GOOD reports. ....BB

A vague report is better than no report. At least you know there are fish out there and can go give it a whirl. It's getting harder and harder for people to share in the wwwbecause people see the effect a good report has on the number of boats at any particular location. Let's keep the reports vague but ongoing.

I usually give pretty specific reports but it can bite you quite badly-especially if the area is very tiny such as off a small reef or point. I think that with the number of boats and the ability of social media you have to think a bit before you post. Can the area take the number of boats-not a problem if you are talking about "the hi-way" someplace but other areas you might want to tone it down and if you feel like it-by PM. I don't give out anchorages anymore except by PM for the above reasons. Too many boats and not enough people studying the charts and figuring it out for themselves. Personally I'm happy with a general report and what was working.

total agree... general area is good enough...most anglers that know there area can figure it out..those who don't, will learn as the rest of us did... to be good at anything in life require effort and time put into it...most of the veteran anglers on the forum have put there life into fishing and to expect them to give it up on public forum to people whom that don't know?? un reasonable in my humble opinion.... those who will now be looking for Grady's to target as the hot spot..remember we all like to fish and most cases like a little room to move around...:)

I don't understand the push back by folks if someone is vague with their reports. I also noticed the ones that push back never post up reports of their own. Go figure :rolleyes:.

For me it's all about the whole experience and the trip. The fishing is just part of it. I like to take pictures and share the experience. I don't usually post up specifics and it is a proven fact that the internet has played a huge role on pressure in certain area's. I like to learn how and what to fish for any given species through trying. Too many folks now a day's want to push the easy button lol :D. Hell, all the information is on here through the years for most area's. You just have to search for it and read but some folks are too lazy to even do that :(.

I am same way I am vague with my reports.... I don't give the exact locations...You have to figure it out to some degree... I still will post general area though....

Its tricky because no one wants to combat fish. A lot of us like to move around as mentioned and get on the water to get some peace and serenity without all the stress of feeling like you are driving an obstacle course.

For me, I just like to read reports of people catching fish. Its a big part of the reason why a lot of us are on the forum. I read reports from places I have never fished and likely will never fish, but they are enjoyable and interesting to read. It would be a shame if reports were to die out and not be part of this forum in the future.

The less specific on the location is probably the key, but lets be honest if you give a general area its not hard to find the large concentration of boats and figure out the drift.

Thx everyone for the replies guys and I must say I agree with just about everything said above. So far quite a different attitude and response here as compared over on the Van Fishing Reports Forum....interesting.

Every fisherman I have fished with or known well has been vague or secretive at least a few times, in certain situations, especially on public forums and yet in the other thread several seem barely able to comprehend this idea. Maybe its just more typical of the times and many of the younger fishers, not realizing there are and have been little gems out there for a long time ....and that fish don't just hang out at the usual 'mainstream' published spots that every tackle shop or fishing website reports on daily.... not sure - just a guess.

wishiniwasfishin1, you mention " if you give a general area its not hard to find the large concentration of boats and figure out the drift" ...... in curtain situations that is true so then the vague report that is provided will help that person ( and I still have respected my sources/intel by not blabbing out an exact location ) In other situations that's not true because you are assuming a unknown little spot can be found by having a fleet there. The spot I was at had 2 of the same boats in it for a few days - its a quiet unknown location that would be very difficult to find and lousy if even 4 boats showed up . Making assumptions like the location could be found by seeing a fleet of boats is a pretty incorrect assumption in the case I speak of.

The comments about risking crowding up a tiny area is why I am sometimes vague on a report but also in respect to any source; small private intel/group that perhaps provided information. Of course there is no need to be vague about larger areas and areas that are obviously very well know and busy most of the time - Attempting to keep a well known busy Vancouver spot such as Whole-In-The-Wall, South Bowen Hump, Sandheads or Vancouver Harbour a 'secret' would be quite funny for sure but when it comes to some of these tiny spots in HS where 3 is a crowd .....that's a different story.

Fogged in, yes exactly my thoughts as I kind of figured being vague ( and then explaining why that might be necessary) was far more respectful than just providing a lie.

BB yes Social Media/web/ text / provides way more info now and way faster to way more people; on the spot in fact. All the more reason to be careful I suppose, if you want to keep a smaller less visited spot from eventually looking like the crazy boats photo I posted in the Van reports thread !!!

Cheers,

Yeah I noticed that tip provided to those trying to find the good spots in the Vancouver Forum report thread ..... thats all you and I need is a bunch of boats trailing along behind ( and all because we have Grady's lol)

I agree. Never understood how people can get p*ssed if the L/L are not included.

While the tug is the drug for all of us, the other drug for many of us is the keys we unlock to get to the tug. Figuring it all out is what keeps me coming back. I tried guided fishing once. I was told to sit down and wait until I was handed the rod. I couldn't deal with it and the guide was not overly keen about answering too many of my questions. It drove me nuts just sitting there. I need to do something while I am waiting.....tie lures, check the GPS, look at the D/S, check temp, take photos, whatever. There is soo much more to the experience than just roaring off to "the spot", dropping the exact same flasher and lure to the exact same depth and the exact same time of day or part of the tide. Unlocking the mystery is the real drug for me.

BTW, please don't get me wrong, Guided fishing is an excellent solution for those how do not have access otherwise, or just want the experience. And I know that the vast majority of guides are quite happy to answer all your questions, show you the ropes and teach you most of what they know. I just did not get that experience from my trip.

Yup. Your not going to better yourself as a fisher if you are following around day old reports on an internet forum. Fish swim lol. Time on the water, fishing log's, research, and trying your own thing for what works and doesn't for you. That is how you become a better fisher :).

All valid points on this thread. There are a multitude of reasons why people, including myself, say where we are fishing and how we are in generalized terms.

Another few good reasons why generalized or "secretive" information is used on these boards:

1. It's already out there...you just have to look a little.
2. Most guides had to learn to fish the hard way. We had to learn techniques, tips, tricks, etc from years of experience.
3. For those of us looking to make a few dollars (slowly) from guiding or running a charter vessel, it makes no sense to call a few hundred boats onto an area which coughs up a few fish, depending on the location, and potentially frusterate a business advantage of producing fish for our guests. Tips can make guiding financially "doable" but without tips it's a subsistence living if you're only running someone elses boat. Guides are not paid well and tips serve to make it reasonable. Lodges are paying the same guide rates as 18 years ago...(what a joke) despite the fact that revenues, expenses and margins are disproportionately increasing.
4. It's part of the fun. Get out and fish. If you want to get a fish everytime, the Supermarket is closer and a whole lot cheaper.

Damn!

I thought from the thread title I was going to get the latest report with the exact co-ordinates and other necessary details to slay them.

But no.
Another discussion about the lack of specifics in reports.

Even went to the Vancouver report thread to see what was up.

Apparently there is a small difference of opinion about what should be shared between catchers (instant catch gratification required) and anglers (like to explore the waters, try different depths, lures etc., and enjoy the day, regard a fish in the boat as areward but don't get bent out of shape if they don't get anything.

Earlier Barnacle Bill cited Lee Straight and Ted Pecks newspaper reports.
Many years ago, but I don't recall them being terribly specific, other than Hole in the wall, Salmon Rock, and, at Sun Derby time, Mcnab Creek.
More about technique, tides etc. - we mostly mooched then.
Info on the level that today you can glean from Gary Coopers tv shows.
But in those days a 16 - 18 foot boat was a big boat, so people didn't roar all over the place in pursuit of the latest hot spot.

Cheers

Some think fishing reports are too vague... Go check out a hunting forum and ask for spots....
You'll only do it once[emoji1].
But agreed there are too many just wanting to be spoon fed, the quick fix, screw the learning curve,
And give nothing back.
I pretty much quit posting reports all together for this reason, why should I do all the work to satisfy someone that's not will to and just wants spoon feeding. I dunno maybe I'm just getting old and grumpy?
