Fishermen - Listen!

I know we often complain about the other user groups wasting and abusing our precious resource - and mostly rightfully do we complain. But what I saw out of Sooke today really disgusts me and makes me sick in my heart! Now that we have those big schools of pinks, cohos and sockeyes here in Sooke there is a lot of fun to be had - and you should go out and enjoy this - but responsibly. I saw many people netting fish, throwing it into the boat - fiddling to get the hook out and the fish untangled from the net and then handling the fish with dry hands and finally tossing it back. What do you think the survival chances are of those fish? Zero! I saw a number of fish floating around belly up, half faces missing - seal and gull food! What a shame! There is no reason to net a fish if you don't want to or cannot keep it. Please! When fishing for those smaller and salmon schools, use a single barbless hook, bring the fish to the side of your boat, grab your flasher and hold it there - if you see no spots on the tail then check if there is an adipose fin - yes, just take the needle-nose pliers and grab the hook shank and twist it off. No need to net nor touch the fish. Yeah, some go berserk beside the boat and some may fall off before you identify them - but honestly, you will catch another of those 4-7# fish within minutes - so what! Rather lose one more legal fish than kill one more illegal! And as it happens sometimes that your single hook goes right through its eye or gills and it bleeds - please take this fish if its legal. That way we at least minimize the waste - I know, there is a certain percentage of collateral damage associated with sportfishing but if you act responsible it can be kept to a minimum! I saw people netting 10 inch salmon! For what??? Afraid of losing this lunker in the last second? Please!!! If you ever thought for a minute what a miracle this complete salmon lifecycle is, or if you ever helped at a hatchery and saw how much time, love and effort each one of those little buggers receives and such a fraction only returns, then you could not possibbly act like so many out of Sooke today! That was an totally unnecessary massacre and this hurts our resource, our reputation, and eventually our fishing regulations. If DFO gets wind of acts like that they could rightfully close us down to protect stocks if we cannot carry out catch and release properly - and you know what, if such a decision was based on such irresponsible behavious by some of us I would welcome such a decision! What got me further in rage was a guy at the cleaning table beside me who throws 6 sockeyes on the table. My jaw just dropped and I was speachless for a while. Then I asked him if he didn't watch the news and knew that socks were closed and why. He replied sniffy that those were cohos. I told him if there WERE cohos then they were wild and illegal as well. When he got a little farty I got a bit uncanadian and he was gone with his fish within seconds. Never saw him again. That is either plain stupid or plain bold and if I didn't have my two little kids to watch there I would have called him in. This is totally unacceptable and I am ashamed for our sportfishing community! I know that this is probably ill-addressed with most of you here but you and me have the responsibility to either educate the truly mistaken or embarrass and call the irresponsible ones. We complain that the previous generation have taken too much when the stocks seemed endless. There is no excuse to mistreat a 4# pink or coho nowadays. Let's be better stewards and still enjoy the fishing!

That is really disappointing to hear. Its almost like there needs to be a little test that goes along with getting your license. Such as identifying your catch and correct fishing procedures.

Must agree with you on this one Chris while fishing at Browns Bay today with a pair of new fisherman I was disgusted at how many people were netting the cohos. Ask my buddies how I was repeatidly calling people idiots. We had 3 nice wild coho to the boat and released without touching the fish no problem. It really burns me when there netting these fish. My buddies even commented we were the only boat out of the 30 that were there that werent idiots. Except u Lazoman I know u know the gig. LOL Anyhow I'm feeling u Chris these donks shouldnt be allowed to fish. Half of em probably dont know what the difference is between a hatch and a wild!!

agreed 100%

unfortunately, these rehabs probably make up 85% of the fishing fleet out there. Alot of morons and people who just have their heads in the clouds and nobody's interests in mind other than their odd fish.

Agreed it is a joke. Just take them to the side of the boat if its a hatch hand bomb it in by grabbing the leader and if its a wild use a gaff and pop it off.

Chris, I totally agree with you. Any fish to possibly be released should be ID'd while beside the boat, and released without being removed from the water. So what if you lose a fish here and there, you'd think these guys had never caught a fish before.

Not to down play the poor release skills of some, but it seems less fish would be harmed if the people could keep what they catch. Catch your 4 fish for the day and get off the water, but with all the regs now days ( size, species, wild, hatchery, area). There are alot of people that fish once a year their going to have a tough time identifying their catch at a glance. There's not much excuse for netting 12 inchers though but when your dealing with the 77cm springs fish are going to be handled and released all day long.Just to many regulations.

Thanks Chris, i have been wanting to start a topic about this for a long time now. I notice how so many guys are netting fish they assume are pinks, then see them get tossed over again. Not even revived by the boat, just by the tail, lobbed into the water. It makes me Sick[xx(]

I dont net unless its over 10 pounds

I was saying to my guest today that the same 10% of the guys catch 90% of the fish. The others are wannabe weekend warriors that really in no way can call themselves anglers. We will ultimately pay the price for their ignorance. I too have fought for years with my inner self as to the shame I can feel from even being involved in sportfishing. I'll only net a big spring if it is one I will keep. Small fish are pitched into the boat by the leader( pinks , ho's etc) Everything else can be quickly identified and released untouched. I've released many 40+ pound fish by the side of the boat. I must have hooked a mixed bag of around 30 fish today. Not one fish other than the two I kept came out of the water. Not one was touched by my hands. I only hope we can continue to teach others the importance of effective catch and release. Otherwise , Yes four's your limit and get off the water. Too many guys are recreationally killing out there.[xx(]

You knkow what would make you even mader chris is you were out everyday !!What I see every day makes me want to puke I see guy cleaning crab undersize/too many just on sat there was too old guys in a 12 ft tinny cleaning crab so i asked them wow how many crab do you need????? well we got 16 and there is 4 of us im looking at there boat no way in hell is there 4 people so I then ask well where are they????? and told him if fisheries catches you you will be fined 11 bucks a crab as they cant tell how big they are. all he said was thanks for that and continued cleaning.

Or im seeing guys with coho jack springs etc thinking there pinks.
EVERYDAY it sickening!!

Chris you make some great points and i tip my hat to you and wolf for calling out these guys. Abuse of the regs is common and with out enough regular dfo inspections the best chance we have is peer pressure. Lets speak up you guys. I had a tradesman on my job early boasting about all the fish he caught including some sockeye. I called him on sockeye being closed and he acted ignorant of it but knew damn well they were closed. Pisses me right off.

I totally agree w/ this and have been saying this for years. I conducted a fair amount of research on catch and release mortality at VIU in the late 90's and when fish are landed with a net, dehooked then released the mortality rate is very high w/ salmonids.

The "best" way to release these fish unharmed is to play them quickly, use a single, single barbless hook of course, hold the flasher and use a gaff hook to grab the gap of the hook and pull up and invert the hook and the fish releases easily. This is way quicker and better for the fish then trying to get pliers on the hook of a fish that won't stop moving.

Problem is the weekend retards who come out will never ever have the skill, experience and perspective to employ these techniques.

i might fish once a week through the summer locally (nanaimo/French creek), with a few trips of 3-5 days thrown in (sooke, renfrew and bamfield) there to make it a solid summer for me. I guess i could be considered a "weekend warrior" due to only fishing 15 days per year total.

anyways... my point is that even though i am not hardcore or fish a ton, I am smart enough to know good fishing techniques, release techniques, and morals and ethics. Whether someone fishes 15 times a year or 150, i think some people either get it or they dont. lets face it, there is alot of ignorant dumbassess out there that just have no friggin idea regardless of how often they fish.

although we would like to think the more one fishes, the wiser they are... i have seen the near opposite!

right on for calling him on it chris, too many guys don't speak up. Embarrassing someone at the dock is a good deterrent for next time he is out, he won't want to be embarrassed in front of his wife again, so might think twice.

I think there is A LOT of damage done to fish with guys who use double hook setups on hoochies. There is no need to use two hooks, it just makes releasing fish a ***** - go with one big siwash hook on a swivel and you'll land more fish and do less damage.

Did not intend to include guys like you bangbus. I am sure not every weekender is a retard but the ones that come out during the pink runs likely get out only a couple days a year and these are the guys w/ little or no perspective in regards to fish welfare.

no offence taken, as i know i try and practice good technique and morals out there...

i guess we can sit and point fingers all day, and we know DFO will likely do nothing about all this, other than shut it down one day.

i guess it rests in our hands to practice good stewardship, teach others who are in our boats, and call people on their mistakes back at the dock. nothing like feeling like a total loser in front of friends/wives when someone calls you on a bonehead move!

I won't go fishing without my needle-nose pliers, never have to touch a fish, a must tool. Went with someone once who just threw the fish in the box without even bonking, zero respect, I really laid into him, hopefully we can educate these morons, that's all we can do guys.

"Weekend Warrior"...... just a metaphor. We cannot forget the honest to goodness slayers out there as well. I've watched these stereo typical redneck poachers totally disrespect the resource and literally get off on " smackdown" style of fishing. Same guys that say they love the outdoors , but treat it like their own personal garbge dump by leaving everything behind. Including those beercans, candy bar wrappers, and the all famous Mepps or Vibrax packages tangled in a heap of monofilament.

The occassional bleeder happens to us all, despite our very best attempts. Best you can do is acknowledge the mistake and minimize the chance of it ever happening again.

It doesnt matter if its a "weekend warrior" or others its people that have a disregard for the rules in place plain and simple, SOME people just dont care I think the mentality is this......

Im going fishing and its costing me money for boat, gas, bait, gear, launch etc etc etc so im going to kill things!! and I dont care its my time!!!!!!I only have this day so im taking whatever I can.
This is what happens like i said earler re garding these 2 clowns had 16 crab and I know some were undersize.

If the common educated</u> fisherman doesnt speak up it ill continue thats the only reason why I speack up as it really make me mad what are people going to say ??? tell me to F off big deal Im really not scared !!!LOL

So please speak up or dont ***** about it!!!!

Thanks and good luck wolf

P.S. ill back up anyone if there are going to say something just call on me ill be there!!!!!
