I know we often complain about the other user groups wasting and abusing our precious resource - and mostly rightfully do we complain. But what I saw out of Sooke today really disgusts me and makes me sick in my heart! Now that we have those big schools of pinks, cohos and sockeyes here in Sooke there is a lot of fun to be had - and you should go out and enjoy this - but responsibly. I saw many people netting fish, throwing it into the boat - fiddling to get the hook out and the fish untangled from the net and then handling the fish with dry hands and finally tossing it back. What do you think the survival chances are of those fish? Zero! I saw a number of fish floating around belly up, half faces missing - seal and gull food! What a shame! There is no reason to net a fish if you don't want to or cannot keep it. Please! When fishing for those smaller and salmon schools, use a single barbless hook, bring the fish to the side of your boat, grab your flasher and hold it there - if you see no spots on the tail then check if there is an adipose fin - yes, just take the needle-nose pliers and grab the hook shank and twist it off. No need to net nor touch the fish. Yeah, some go berserk beside the boat and some may fall off before you identify them - but honestly, you will catch another of those 4-7# fish within minutes - so what! Rather lose one more legal fish than kill one more illegal! And as it happens sometimes that your single hook goes right through its eye or gills and it bleeds - please take this fish if its legal. That way we at least minimize the waste - I know, there is a certain percentage of collateral damage associated with sportfishing but if you act responsible it can be kept to a minimum! I saw people netting 10 inch salmon! For what??? Afraid of losing this lunker in the last second? Please!!! If you ever thought for a minute what a miracle this complete salmon lifecycle is, or if you ever helped at a hatchery and saw how much time, love and effort each one of those little buggers receives and such a fraction only returns, then you could not possibbly act like so many out of Sooke today! That was an totally unnecessary massacre and this hurts our resource, our reputation, and eventually our fishing regulations. If DFO gets wind of acts like that they could rightfully close us down to protect stocks if we cannot carry out catch and release properly - and you know what, if such a decision was based on such irresponsible behavious by some of us I would welcome such a decision! What got me further in rage was a guy at the cleaning table beside me who throws 6 sockeyes on the table. My jaw just dropped and I was speachless for a while. Then I asked him if he didn't watch the news and knew that socks were closed and why. He replied sniffy that those were cohos. I told him if there WERE cohos then they were wild and illegal as well. When he got a little farty I got a bit uncanadian and he was gone with his fish within seconds. Never saw him again. That is either plain stupid or plain bold and if I didn't have my two little kids to watch there I would have called him in. This is totally unacceptable and I am ashamed for our sportfishing community! I know that this is probably ill-addressed with most of you here but you and me have the responsibility to either educate the truly mistaken or embarrass and call the irresponsible ones. We complain that the previous generation have taken too much when the stocks seemed endless. There is no excuse to mistreat a 4# pink or coho nowadays. Let's be better stewards and still enjoy the fishing!
