Early Halibut Opening

I completely changed my stance on this issue after the US president said today "Canada isn't viable enough to be a real country ". Then again threatened the sovereignty of our country. What a hostile neighbor.

We should as soon as possible look into US citizens to be banned from using public fishery halibut quota and also immediately pay three to four times the license fee. Use those fees to benefit our fishery with more quota if needed. If a US citizen wants to retain halibut they buy their own commercial quota.

It's reasonable response to tarrifs being implemented possibly end of month and also the steel industry tarrifs being announced tommorrow.

We also need to stop fighting amongst ourselves. If Canadians don't have enough quota the Americans need to pay to access it and also pay more in our fishery.

I mentioned this awhile back early in this discussion, any and all NON Canadian tourists should buy commercial hali quota , it's just that simple!
And as @PEETZcanada mentioned, find a way to better use that data that IS lost when paper rec licences are at some point just tossed in garbage after every season.

I think an 80cm Halibut would be just fine to keep the season open all year for everyone. If you want more there is the option to lease quota and take any amount and size you want. The same groups, organizations, and people that asked us to write letters and voice our opinions to increase opportunity and open up more areas, in order to keep small coastal towns alive, are now telling us to do just the opposite. Of course the north coast only wants a short season because it's controlled by the big lodges that only open June, July, August. What really needs to happen is to get more of the allowable catch quota shifted to the rec side. Then there would be know squableing. The rec side should have a set amount of poundage that allows for a full season every year, with a 90/145 limit.

Only thing I'll agree about above post is % should be 75-25 at bare minimum, not the 85-15 we see now. If we had 25% even this season we would have a good opportunity at 1/2, 133/115cm limit according to dfo's own table.

Taking "providing food for the whole country" bs out of it, which sector provides more equal distribution of the Industry GDP to stakeholders? How many Canadians benefit from having sport access to the fishery vs. the employment of commercial fisherman and their families and support systems. Do the commercial license holders profit the most with the fewest beneficiaries? Would more Canadians benefit from fish being sold to China and Japan, or by keeping a sustainable fishery for Canadians? I'd love to see all of this broken down. I'm not arguing for either case. But it seems simple that if it was all things equal, the percentage should be based on that alone.

When they tell me im restricted in size to save the “breeders” then allow commercial guys to keep those same “breeders”….every decision that follows is suspect to me.

Lots of info and data out there that clearly shows that the sector that generates the most money for the economy (mostly local economies) is the public fishery or rec sector by far. Unfortunately, the ENGO's (that want to shut us down) FN's and commercial sector have been better then the public fishery at lobbying the govt. to get what they want. That is why the rec sector is continually getting screwed as we are the easiest sector to target - cause we usually just roll over and take it!

We need to change this - we need to make the public fishery a political issue that is not easy to ignore! We're not taking about just those that like to catch sport fish, it is also about sustenance fishing, a way of life, part of our heritage and culture and is essential to the prosperity of hundreds of local economies along the whole west coast. Time for us to unite and fight back! Need to make this a bigger issue in the upcoming federal election before it gets too late!

In fairness I hear it A LOT from people that aren't "in the know" Like the average weekend angler says it a ton....I can't help but tell them it is actually because we only get 15% of the TAC

I gave up correcting people on social media, they know better and your the idiot to them.

There is defiantly a large portion of anglers out there that believe max size is to save the female halibut breeders

The amount of TAC taken in February march April may is a fart in a dust storm compared to June July aug ,,, it comes down to certain users not wanting to share plain and simple and THEY will vote and push their will to get there way .trust me on that..

I still say get the Americans to pay for quota, and we all go home happy! Besides anyway you see them in droves off Barkley Sound and west coast in summer tapping into our resource. Those guys taking there boats up here really won't care anyway.

Think of the halibut quota we could free up for the rec sector! It would be golden. If we lose some of them at lodges other visitors will back fill. It will way better for the rec sector.

All you guys that complain about the split should do some research ( on your own) and look back on how and why quotas came in , in the first place. Also take note that the 12% Sports were given in the first place was, and I quote your rep at the time because i was there , "12% is more than enough". TAC's were higher then so everyone was happy . Its unfortunate for all concerned that since 2000 TAC's have fallen and everyone has paid the price. Like all fish Halibut are cyclical and maybe we will see the rise in your lifetime.

Survey has hundreds of responses. Sfac in Victoria is largest in bc. And yet still survey of fishers disagrees with what you’re saying.

Is there some place to see the survey results. I remember the survey but don’t remember ever seeing the results published.
