Early Halibut Opening

More fishers and less catch, someone won’t be happy. We need to look long and hard at where the TAC is being exploited and by who. Canadian Residents should have priority on their resource. But let’s see what the actual breakdown is! DFO needs to be challenged to find the data!

How does this compare to years past? Haven't we been dealing with this stuff for decades now?

Yes, in that every year more people are fishing and there’s less fish, so yes it’s been happening for a long time and will continue to get worse. The question is when does it hit the tipping point where Canadian resident access is curtailed to support visitor access? As I said earlier maybe the visitor who wants to catch halibut needs to purchase commercial quota. In order to see if this makes sense however you need data as to how the catch breaks down, maybe it’s not an issue?

Well, add me to the “more people fishing” category for Hali. But don’t worry guys, the column has remained blank for the last couple seasons, I only get out that way 1x per year to try.
2025 is my year tho, even if I have to wait until June.

No but what I meant was is this the worst tac we've ever received? Or is this still an improvement over even worse years? Just wondering.

2024 got cut back by I think 10 percent from previous. ( correct me if I'm wrong here on percentage ).

Could shave back the annual licence holder catch based on tac, or based on out of province licence. Or both.

Worst amount we have ever got. Last year was 2nd worst to put into perspective
Oh wow. Thanks, that's what I was looking for.

Ok, feel free to be shocked and pissed off then guys 😬

$20 annual halibut tag to purchase commercial quota? I understand it would be hard to know how many mid season tags are bought etc.

A June opening smokes the entire season on SVI

What about a minimum size limit of 80cm? Let em grow a bit

100% think hali tag to buy quota should be it

Minimum size
1 possession
Tags that use profit to buy commercial quota for sports fishing until we reach 25% TAC
Proper documentation for fish recorded so we don’t have pathetically over exaggerated numbers like in area 3,4

Going to be very challenging - after deduction for last seasons overage of approximatly 30,000 we will have roughly 650,250 pounds to work with. To put in perspective that is -157,000 pounds less than we had last season. Its similar to the TAC we need to run the fishery for June.

Im not seeing how theres enough to run a full season. Might be enough for a June to August fishery.

Oh sure sounds great then it doesnt effect certain groups one bit ...I say march to july 15th thats when the salmon regs get lifted.... as the early halibut season hardly takes anything compared to others...

It makes sense for commercial users should take out of the commercial TAC, but I think about the small operators trying to jockey for quota and it always won't be fair competing against the larger operators.

A Halibut tag for non BC residents and non Canadians seems like the way forward that buys TAC from the following year in the same way a rec overage takes away from subsequent seasons.

but its the DFO so nothing will happen until the fishery collapses and they never saw it coming.

Now let them get back to their study of gender neutral steelhead and gay chum.

95% of licence holders fish June to August. So yes it is fair.
Where did you get that figure? Seems like a lot more people fish outside those months. Is someone somehow tracking this info, like only 5% of fishers buy an annual license? Curious, because I’ve never seen any form of survey.
