Early Halibut Opening

Maybe forcing all non Canadas to purchase TAC will be part of our tariff response. Things are getting ugly!

I’d have no issue with it but I bet some guides US clients make up over half of their buisness

It would be interesting to know how much of the rec tac is used up by non Canadians

At the Gold River launch parking area I’d count Washington state plates every year in July when I got there. Over half the plates in the parking were Washington state with a few Oregon thrown in. Most were serious bottom fishermen.

Do you, or anyone else know how things like the mortality from the trawl bycatch are factored in? I assume the mortality numbers in the chart are from the commercial halibut fishery only? Maybe it’s accounted for somewhere else?

Maybe we don't sell Americans BC fishing licenses. Screw em.

The biggest highest, so big,..bigger than anyone has ever seen….Tariffs. …Like never before,…

I can do it…with just one order,..just swipe the pen,.. take their halibut, they would have to pay us….Huge….a lot of people are saying it…I could do it

Going to be very challenging - after deduction for last seasons overage of approximatly 30,000 we will have roughly 650,250 pounds to work with. To put in perspective that is -154,000 pounds less than we had last season. Its similar to the TAC we need to run the fishery for June.

Im not seeing how theres enough to run a full season. Might be enough for a June to August fishery.

They would be paying us with funny money anyways so probably don’t mind.

Alaskas got some funky rules

(a) No person on board a charter vessel (as referred to in 50 CFR 300.65) shall catch and retain more than one Pacific halibut per calendar day, and

(b) No person on board a charter vessel (as referred to in 50 CFR 300.65) shall catch and retain from 1 February to 14 July any Pacific halibut that with head on is greater than 40 inches (101.6 cm) and less than 80 inches (203.2 cm), and from 15 July to 31 December, any Pacific halibut that with head on is greater than 36 inches (91.4 cm) and less than 80 inches (203.2 cm), as measured in a straight line, passing over the pectoral fin from the tip of the lower jaw with mouth closed, to the extreme end of the middle of the tail; and

(c) No person on board a charter vessel may catch and retain Pacific halibut in 2024 on any Friday from 19 July – 13 September.

I wonder how many days of the week you would have to shut down to effect or reduce the amount of halibiut people at lodges were keeping

To me it seems it would be more fair to do that and have the season open longer

Maybe only have halibiut open on saturdays and Sundays

In the summer and open everyday the rest of the year

Someone can correct me if I am wrong, but I don't believe the SFAB can make a recommendation that doesn't include a full season. They are locked into that one from membership.
Could be wrong on that though.
