Driving an EV pickup

I think the auto makers have forgotten that small street legal offroaders ever existed. All those Trackers and Samurais you see around hunt camps are 20+ years old, and there's no equivalent on the market. We're expected to buy $20-30,000 side by sides instead, and the f@#$in things still don't have a heater. So an EV version seems unlikely...

Great idea though...equivalent of a Samurai in EV form would be a hoot. For some reason the trend seems to be to make ultra luxury EVs rather than basic.

There's some economics at play here. R&D is paid down sooner by building and selling the high margin luxury models first, the smaller, lower priced models come later. Can't blame them for that.

But they gave up on the compact bush friendly SUV category completely, that suggest sales too low to continue. Maybe once EVs are mainstream and it becomes understood that they're better in the bush than ICE, maybe someone will build a small rock crawler. Closest thing on the horizon now would be Rivian's R3 compact SUV. It's a 5 seat vs the RS1 7 seater, shorter and narrower.

Loved my Tracker, and our Wrangler!
Electric, for the conversion guys. If I wanted to do an offroad specific vehicle I would consider electric if it wasn't a multi-day outing. Don't think the market is there. Wife Wranglers why not electric. I read they are doing an electric Jeep Wagoneer?

I think you will see a lot more of that.
Hard to argue with the op cost savings. Park at maintenance yard and charge every night. Range a non issue since they'd rarely leave town.

There are a buch here in Victoria. CRD has some, Saanich Police, City of Vic.

Oh haven’t seen any here in the lowermainland so was surprised when I saw this in langley look like it just rolled out of the show room

Dealerships... will stuff like this^ and the Tesla model bump them into irrelevancy? Discussion for elsewhere probably. I'll just dock this here though: this is the sort of boat you can buy if you own a few GM dealerships. Don Wheaton's After Eight.

That's funny. So many invisible features that the dealers try to upsell after a deal is made. Anyway, easy to tell them to pound sand right?

But...that image looks definitely doctored.

45-50 gals per hour/per engine. Cat 3412s But I guess if you can buy it, maintain it, moor it, crew it then the fuel is insignificant

They came in to Tobia Wilderness Resort when we were there in the summer of 2023.

They tied up at the furthest dock and everyone was so happy. The Wheaton Family were apparently worried that they were going to block everyone's view, and everyoune was delighted they had showed up and given us all a wind and wave break .It was blowing more than a summer's breeze putting it mildly and it was rock and roll at the dock until they came along. Their boat only has a bow thruster and it was a smooth landing while that BF boat was getting blown about

The Captain came around and spoke to everyone who was moored on the docks. Nice guy, he is redoing a Grand Banks 42 and spent some time talking with us about our diesel heaters.

When they arrived there was a young woman who I thought might have been the First Officer on deck observing while the boat was docking .

I spoke to her the next day and learned that she was an ICU nursewho was aboard becasue Mr. Wheaton's 102 year old mother was also aboard. She was a Canadian who got her Nursing degree in Australia and then spent time with the Flying Doctors. She was working at main hopital in Victoria casual and was offered the opportunity to do work on these on these private yachts, She does a few months on and off the boats and keeps her hours up at the hospital. Nice gig.

The Wheaton family seemed very nice, polite and low key. when they were on the docks .

When I got up at 7:00 the morning they left , they were already long gone and I had heard nothing when they left.

I’m not a big fan of dealerships or the big 3. Sued Wheaton and GM once. I guess at least he is keeping a lot of the money here on the coast and is likely a better guy then Mr Dark Maga

GM just launched their truck I think?

Not sure if any forum members bought a cybertruck I know one asked my opinion when his pre-order came up and it was clear at that point the resale of them would plummet. That was before this video. Which makes me think forum members who bought ford lightnings are geniuses

1. Not trying to say anything negative about the Wheaton family, just saying the dealership model has a lot of profit built in that's not benefiting consumers.
2. Silverado EV has been releasing modest numbers of trucks onto the market through 2024, the GMC version has just launched.
3. I found the linked video to be borderline unwatchable. I guess I don't have much affinity with the Jackass style of filmmaking.
4. I bought a Lightning because it was an EV in a proven truck platform, first time I've bought a new Ford. F150 is the most valuable single nameplate in the automotive world, so I relied on Ford doing the work to ensure that an electrified version wouldn't tarnish their reputation. I did reserve a Silverado EV, but let it go once I got the Lightning. I'm sure I'd be driving the Chev if it had come to market first.

A good brand name, worth protecting! I agree that video style is terrible but I love that the Ford goes through hell and you don’t have to worry about the loosing your hitch. Making a truck is hard, converting to electric is hard but since haul trucks have been electric drive for decades it makes a lot of sense. I’m looking forward to the future of electric fords, the regeneration braking for when I take my camper and boat over mountain passes makes me salivate, I was almost in love with diesel engine brakes, now I can’t believe how much energy is wasted. Sorry to post a slightly non relevant video, wanted to bring it back somehow to the title as half of us gas up for the long weekend!

I love one pedal mode! The energy recapture is cool, but the effortless speed control when loaded up or descending something steep is next level. Us BCers know all about driving trucks on steep mountain roads, and I was always careful to gear down for steep drops in my gas trucks. I could usually go 80-100,000 km between brake pad changes in a half ton by diligently shifting down to third or second in the hills.

Now it's super simple, just feather the pedal to go whatever speed is appropriate, uphill or down. No more decisions about whether to stay in 4HI, or stop and shift down to 4LO, or when to shift back. I waited 26 months for Lightning to arrive so I had a lot of time to read and check out videos. I thought I knew what to expect about owning an EV, and for the most part I did. But I wasn't prepared for how good one pedal mode is, especially in the bush.
