Repower - Hyundai Seasall 270S/Mercury Bravo 3X

Its been a bit of a process from the initial order to the completed installation. I ordered the engine and leg in June 2021, received the package in late March 2022, and finished the installation and sea trials a month ago.

Prior to the repower, the boat had a Volvo Penta KAD43 with a DP290. The engine had 2600 hrs and ran fine. We make some long runs (150 Km+ one way) and I was starting to get concerned about the reliability of a 20-year-old engine. There is not a lot of help that far out. The boat was getting heavier and heavier over time and it was a challenge to get it on step with 800 liters of fuel, ice, and gear for 4-5 day trips.

I did a lot of research on engine/leg options and decided on the Hyundai Seasall 270S and Mercury Bravo 3x leg. The combo was 400 lbs lighter and 40hp more than the previous engine. It also had considerably more torque.

The initial props didn't work out so I jumped from 20 to 23 pitch. Initially, it would hit WOT and the engine would shut down. It is now propped close. 22's would get the extra 100 RPM but I'm happy where it's at.

The boat weighs 11,500 LBS with full fuel, ice, gear, and 2 guys. It gets on step at 28 MPH in approximately 20-25 seconds. Cruises fully loaded at 27-28 MPH at 3150 RPM and burns 26 liters/HR. Max speed is 36 mph at 3700 RPM.

The repower came with some headaches. In the end, I'm super happy with the end product and the noticeable performance increase.

Looks like a nice package!!!
I just ordered the same Simrek drive shower for my Bravo 2. I just had my drive rebuilt, because the paint inside the upper was flaking off due to heat. This caused some damage in the bearings and surfaces inside.

I know this post is a couple years old now, but how is the motor running? How many hours? Any issues? The reason I ask is I’m looking at a boat with that motor and drive.

I did have some issues. The shop that installed the package did not use the Hyundai alignment tool and the dampner blew apart. It even states this will happen in the manual but they knew better. There were a few other issues with the install but not related to the engine/leg but with the company that installed the package.
Other than that issue, the engine has run flawlessly. It went through some engine oil until around 75 hours and then it dropped to zero consumption.
Overall it has been a great addition. Marine Supply in Nanaimo has filters,impellors..etc in stock so parts have not been an issue.

Who did the install?

Appreciate the info. I couldn’t find much local info or dealers, but this helps a lot.
