Do I need it ... No, but I want it. Rivian Truck

Every week I check the Ford tracking page for update on my truck. Every week Ford moves the anticipated delivery date out another week. $80,000 game of whack a mole.

Some strange stuff going on with EV purchases. Wife was looking to change out her Hyundai PHEV and go fully electric. We got a call from Hyundai to come in a test drive one they had just got in as we were on the wait list. Told them straight up it wasn’t the model we wanted but they insisted on running the numbers for us. What really surprised me other than the usual sleight of hand, between trade ins and rebates, was the fact you had to finance. When we said we preferred paying cash we were told we couldn’t, we would have to finance for at least 6 months. I guess there is a kickback because they said if we paid it off after 6 month mandatory financing they would cover the interest over that period.

Sounds like dealer playing a feature in the factory finance system. Remember they're a business franchise too.

I’m surprised that’s not illegal but I know a guy that bought a new tundra and wasn’t allowed to pay cash unless he had a Toyota truck to trade in. He didn’t have anything to trade in so he was forced to finance at some awful rate and ends up with a truck with a colour he didn’t want. What a joke.

So many people have dealer horror stories. You'd think with the success of Tesla and its no dealers, no advertising policies that the legacy brand dealers would smarten up their act a bit, but it seems like the opposite sometimes. Maybe grabbing up cash before the whole dealer model collapses?

I suspect a lot of salespeople have been having a rough go. No product equals no commission, so not sure how they survived.

We work on a lot of new build dealerships and it doesn’t seem to be slowing down for making them bigger and better. It’s pretty crazy. Or maybe it’s just a real estate game because they have huge chunks of land in prime areas that can only go up and up and up. Tesla is a bit different but they are still putting stores everywhere, just not with a lot of inventory.

I think ford was going to try out the online ordering tactic for the mustang Mach e in an attempt to bring the price down on the car

One of the largest dealer groups will NOT sell you a vehicle (won't sell to me as a dealer too), it must be financed all all the costs, extended warranty, insurance etc....

Seems to take long and longer time to get our product to us....very little stock coming in.....

Then you need to watch where things are being built....some from Mexico are well over 4 months.

Mine was built in Detroit. Train to Calgary then truck. There's a tracking website for the rail portion but I CBF'd with it. Probably just make me more PO'd if I see it sitting in some rail yard in the US Midwest for a couple of weeks.

If Tesla and BYD used the dealership model, their salespeople would be making serious bank! Their sales are ramping up super fast while most other auto makers are still being plagued by chip shortages and keep slipping backward.

I believe ford and gm threatened dealers they would go to a factory direct model because all the funny stuff.

Ford dabbled with direct to consumer with the Mach e, but dealers had tantrums. They pulled back some from that with the Lightning, still ran an online reservation system but orders are initiated through a dealer. Their customer facing interfaces like the online status tracker are inconsistent and inaccurate, which I guess is not surprising given they've been a wholesaler for a century.

Seems to me there's still some need for people to sit in and test drive vehicles, but with less service required, the traditional dealer franchise model has to change. I see them going to a handful of large centralized mega showrooms but sales being generally direct online.

Every once in awhile you will wonder why your new vehicle is taking so long.....I have had a handful take forever it seems, some over 9 months. Tough part is the manufacturer will only say it is coming and not a bit more of a reason why.....

Ford Canada dropping prices of all F-150 Lightning models. Not sure if this is driven by the money markets or if part of a larger trend in the broader electric pickup segment. Whatever this is, $59K for a base model doesn't sounds too crazy.

I heard US sales have slowed down. Maybe more will become available? Also I’m sure interest rates have impacted demand!

My my only thought is they not have many on order for there expected increase in production.
