Denman Island Prawning

Maybe I'll take advantage of this opportunity to welcome you Prawnhunter to the forum. It looks like this one could get blown out of the water as well. I wish you good luck with your traps, they look awesome. I am looking forward to further contributions from you.;) eman

What's the difference between a prawn and a shrimp?

Where's Denman and Texada?

GPS coordinates anyone?

It must take quite awhile to reel in 1400+, what lb test line are you using?

Can you take them on the fly? what pattern?

Do they give a good fight?

;)

Enquiring minds wanna know ....

This looks like a freshwater forum! LOL. I can believe it. There just prawns not 50 lb springs. They are not difficult to catch by any means so why is it so hard to believe that prawn hunter cannot pull in what he says? There is definitely tricks to increasing catches huge.

its obvious what we need here is a good old fashion fist fight between prawnman and the assasin. Im thinking nothing below the belt line, no rabbit punches, no hitting while they are down. How does after school this coming friday behind the monkey bars. 5 dollar admission to watch proceeds going towards forum upgrades.

Hello boys, maybe a girl or two in here....
I am a beginner with prawn trapping and just about to give up... we found couple of productive spots for prawns at 350 to 400 feet of water just to the right of French Creek harbour... we set 2 traps at 100 feet apart plus a 10 bls ball in one trap to weight it down and then 500 feet of rope with a 1 bls sinker at 100 feet below a big round orange floatter -with this same set up we already lost 4 traps within a month...
what could of happened to these traps?...
a) storm washed them away ?
b) catching a ride with another ship that went by ?
c) someone took the traps ?...
d) non of the above, maybe I dont know how to set prawn traps.....?....

Traps left out overnight have a strange tendency to disappear. I set mine, fish a couple of hours and then pull them.

How big was your float? Is the spot marked on gps
? If so take your down rigger set it just off bottom and clip in a heavy lined rod 80 lbs test or better with a big 12 ounce or bigger banana weight with a halibut triple and troll back and forth across the current downstream of your mark. If ist there you should hook it. If ya don't then either someone help them selves or a tug boat came threw.

Hey Bluesea, I prawn in the same area as you and sometimes leave my gear out for days at a time, feel free to message me and I'll see if I can help you out. Cheers

The orange floats are about 20" dia (name and phone number marked) and we droped the marker on our GPS on each location, we searched about 1.5 miles out both directions of the curents for them....
Thanks for the tip "Prawnhunter", we will try to scrapping the bottom with the downrigger the next time...
"Fytfire", any tip and trick would be helpful for this new beginner....

BTW : what are you all using for bait to catch prawn and crab ?....
we are using a bag of cheap dog or cat food soaked with "fish sauce' in a bucket,
Fish sauce is cheap from any grocery store (chinese food section) cost about $3 for a liter bottle.((( note: this sauce is very stink )))

thanks again,
Tom

I use ace of baits prawn and crab bait pellets and give it a shot of anchovy oil if you have it. Fish sauce I never even thought about but good idea gona try it out. Salmon heads work for crab as well.

Try using prawn heads as crab bait, once you find your prawn traps that is. People around here also use Carlyle cat food (available @ Quality Foods)

Three weeks ago, I was heading to the bottom of Hornby Is looking for winter springs. As i cut in close to shore, I saw a buoy in about 150ft of water, Strange, as it was too shallow for prawns and there are no crab in that area. On the way back, it was still there so I ran over and wrote down the guys name and telephone number.

At home I phoned him and asked if he had lost a trap.... Yup--- lost THREE , three weeks ago!!! I told him where the one was, and since I was heading out the next day, asked him if he wanted me to pull it. He did, and I did................ It was a nice square trap that he made himself... But with 350 ft of rope and no extra weigh on either the line or trap, it had legs . It had moved a long way from where he set it. I looked for the other two traps , but couldnt find them.

Strangely, it turned out the guy was almost a neighbour, that I has never met.. We BSed for quite a while and agreed to get together this summer for joint prawn hunting and fishing expeditions in the mainland inlets.

Small acts of kindness, such as you exihibited happen far too seldom.

GOOD JOB C.L.!!!!!!!!

I DO AGREE WITH LABMAN2 - it was nice of you "Cuba", not often to hear people do help others... we thought the traps washed away by the storm or picked up by ship that drove by and we wont leave them out over night now "getting too expensive"...

this a great place to exchange informations, getting to know some great people and hope to meet up with some of your boyz and girls out there....
